A French hotel in France
For me hotels in France compete in different category than other hotels. Service is excellent if there's no trouble during your stay. And I didn't have any. The restaurant was good as you would expect in France. The conference lunches took like 2 hours. Everything else was slipping schedule-wise but everything related to food was on time. Room was of quite good size, clean and a little bit old. They could use a little bit of paint here and there. The lobby is quite oddly situated on the second floor. Location is perfect. Close to the main street and on the Promenade des Anglais. Would work even better if I had been there for pleasure not business.
A great place to stay
Following some of the reviews on the Hotel Le Meridien in Nice, it was with some trepidation that we checked in on 28th December 2005 for a four night break which took in New Year. Check-in was really fast and very courteous. When I handed in my Meridien Moments frequent traveller card, the check-in clerk informed us that we were being upgraded to an outside view room with a large bed (rather than the patio view room that had been booked for us by Air Miles). The room was very spacious, clean and beautifully appointed with a lovely super-king sized bed. We had a (small) balcony which gave us a side view of the sea. The double glazing worked extremely well and we heard no noise from outside - or indeed from any of the adjoining rooms or corridor. The bathroom was very large with full sized bath (shower over), toliet and bidet. It was all immaculate and all towels were changed daily. There was a very good buffet breakfast included in the room rate, taken in a very nice restaurant on the first floor which overlooks the Promenade des Anglais. The only (small) gripe we had was that the air-conditioning did not seem to work properly meaning that it became very hot overnight (seeing that it was around freezing outside, it was not so much of a problem) - it would have been nice to have been able to cool the room down for sleeping. Apart from that, we thoroughly recommend this hotel to anyone and would definitely stay there again.
Better than expected
Having read the previous reviews I was expecting the worst. I have to say for a French hotel the service was good, the room was very clean and the food in the restaurant was exceptional. Does need a refurbishment though as it is looking a little tired. However, after visitng a few other hotels in the town this seems to the case at all of them. A very good location
This hotel is a dead parrot!!
Our weary group arrived at 4am after driving late from Montpellier and were greeted by an unsmiling receptionist who refused to hand over the keys until he was presented with the statutory credit card even though we had pre-registration and advance assurances this would not be needed at the early hour. The manager then arrived and we were ushered to the rooms which we were looking forward to until THE SMELL hit us! Everything stank of some kind of sickly air "freshener" sprayed liberally over everything. Beats me why...probably to mask something else unmentionable. The suite I was promised was on the top floor handily placed right under the restaurant where they proceeded to move the furniture around ensuring a sleepless night/ morning. The heating in the room didn't work properly and when we moved to a 7th floor room facing the sea (and the sun) the AC didn't work there either. The smell however continued unabated thanks to the ceaseless efforts of the cleaning staff. We changed hotels as soon as possible. Still got charged though, with the accounts Manager trying to argue that "quiet rooms were not stipulated in the agreement" supplied by the Travel Agent!(they are). Most of our rooms were small, no view, had paint peeling from the walls, scuffed wallpaper and were generally shabby. This hotel has definitely seen better days -quite some time ago- and the lack of concern for customer service coupled with the general surliness gave me the feeling they only cared about extracting as many Euros as possible from their hapless clients before selling up and moving out. I would not be surprised if this Casino Hotel changes hands soon. BTW I would totally recommend the nearby Hotel Hi (-) if you like ultra modern avant-garde Starck-like designs or the nearby Hotel Beau Rivage (-)
Loved the Le Meridien, Nice
We were a bit skeptical after reading the reviews. Very nice hotel, nice location and very helpful staff. Very kid-friendly. They even gave us a bigger room to accommodate our 8 yr old daughter. They provide day care for kids on site if you give 24 hr notice. We used it for a day. Kids love the heated open-air pool on the 9th floor. Do not miss the terrace restaurant.
Pleasant suprise!
I needed to stay here 6 nights for business. We were using their facilities for a function & had blocked rooms off for attendees, so I had to stay here. I was scared to death to stay here after reading some of these reviews. We were upgraded on checkin to a sea view room on 7th floor (nonsmoking floor) -- I am sure the upgrade was due to the fact that I had blocked 50 rooms for my event. The room was small but very lovely with the oversized king bed. No air freshener smell noticed. The balcony was oversized. The street was noisy and the park below had a concert one night but the thick glass doors did well to contain noise when shut tight. Breakfast was included in our room rate, a very nice buffet (loved the pancakes). Staff was consistently very friendly. The only odd thing was I needed an iron, which the promptly delivered but they wanted it back every day. I finally just ironed everything and gave back. Guess they are short on irons. The parking garage is below the hotel and quite expensive, over $100E for a week. The hotel is an in excellent location. My husband needed to amuse himself while I worked, and he was able to walk and take the public bus all over. He loved being so close to Old Town. Half of our group needed to stay at the Radisson and the consensus was that this hotel was much better. They did an excellent job running my event, which was a cocktail reception. We had booked it for the top floor/roof area but due to rain they needed to move it to the function room downstairs. I need to come to this area once a year and would not hesitate to stay again.
nightmare aswell !!!!
well, after reading previous comments I was dubious, so I emailled the hotel & was promised an upgrade to a deluxe double room, so I felt a bit more at ease. On arrival we were greeted very well given our key and proceeded to a room on the 7th floor, on entering the room I could not breathe due to the air freshner, also we had 2 single beds pushed together, the room was also very dark. Complained to reception & were told that the configuration was a french KingSize, this is precis is what happened next :- Room 2 - extra 100 euro sea view real double bed, not much better Room 3 - classic room with double bed no extra - very dark dirty & smelly Room 4 - Eventually they found out of thin air & after 1 hour of arguing, a top floor room with a real double bed, at no extra cost Yippie!!!! But I warn you if you stay here do not unpack, as your clothes will be covered with airfresher!!! Actually take my advise do not stay here !!!!!
Nightmare ........read his carefully....!
The room was downgraded even though I paid for a better room-They did it to everyone there...LOVELY view of a brick wall....NO balcony as PROMISED>NOWHERE for my daughter to sleep-dont ask...I paid for a deluxe room and got something that looked like a YMCA. The staff is RUDE, the housekeeping RUINED my friends silk dress(sprayed it with the tacky air freshener the hotel reeks of)-if you are asthmatic-STAY FAR AWAY FROM THIS HOTEL. it will sicken you-it smells SOOOOOOO BAD!-even on the non smoking floor I was on. The front desk not only did NOTHING to replace my friends dress, after ADMITTING to ruining it, they were openly rude to her. they didnt realize I spoke and understood French..as they were openly badmouthing my friend while I stood nearby (in french, of course!while my friend spoke ZERO french...) not to mention the MOLDY bathrooms, stained carpets, walls, urine smell...eek-I wish I were exaggerating..... You have to PAY to use the chairs at the pool and the beach...which is ridiculous...its very expensive.... the location is the only plus...walking distance to everything-but personally,I would rather stay elsewhere...Hotel Negresco is the better place..so I have heard. and its on the same street. If in Nice-eat at La Voglia-its amazing-and they took really good care of my 9 year old, they have amazing food and staff. Great Italian restaurant-the hotel actually referred it to us-I guess thats the only positive thing they did!
My best ever hotel experience
What a Hotel. Visited Le Meridien on my four day Honeymoon at the start of September and I must admit was a little worried when I looked through other reviews on this site, But my fears were soon behind me once we entered the hotel, the staff were friendly and more than helpful when planning trips etc, the breakfast was great and very relaxed and I don't know where to start on the room, overlooking the gardens of Albert1er and with a clear view of the sea, my holiday was complete (my wife cried when she saw the room). Loved Nice, Loved Le Meridien and hopefully will return next year.
Horrid
I have stayed at le Meridien Nice off season for work purposes, and found it fairly depressing but functional. Its location in the centre of Nice is very central, but had I realised that the hotel had none of the advantages it adverstises (i.e. you have to pay to use the beach and pool - therefore no reason at all to stay here). The staff were very rude and we were woken up by the maid trying to enter at 8.30 in the morning. Surely there is no need to put a do not disturb sign up 24/7? Surely few people check out before 8.30, and if they do, the front desk would know about it? The lights flickered, the bathroom was mouldy and smelt musty, the view of the atrium was basically a concrete well. I would never stay here again, and the cost whilst not seriously expensive was well in excess of what this treatment was worth. I much prefer the beau rivage and other hotels around nice. Avoid Le Meridien.
