The position of the hotel is lovely and our twin room had a lovely view of the promenade gardens and the sea.The room was big and very bright but the decor was 1970 style. The shower flooded the bathroom window sill and the water was lukewarm despite the fact that the water... more

The Golden Lion Hotel, is now a Washearings Hotel, unfortunately it is not of the same standard of most Washearings Hotels. Yes there has been some refurbishment, all the open to public reception rooms look fantastic. Behind the scenes in the bedrooms and bathrooms the... more

The long wait....
On Sunday 5th April we went to the Golden Lion for luncyh - or tried to. 12.40pm ordered lunch in the lounge bar as none of us wanted a roast dinner in the dining room. At 1.10 still no sign of food and as the lounge bar was heaving I walked to the dining room to purchase 1 pint and half a shandy. Was dealt with in a surpercilious manner by a man in a suit behind the bar who pompously explained that this bar was for the dining room only (about 12 people were seated for dinner and not another soul to be seen). He suggested I went back to... more
Good service, Good accomodation, Good food, Great area - would stay again
Staff were attentive and 'on the ball'. We had to book a time for our evening meals however this suited us as we could make sure we had a table. This enabled staff to stagger the meals and subsequently it was never too busy . The restaurant was quite cosy and intimate. The bar area was very welcoming. Not a great choice of food but the four main course options were adequate and well presented. The options changed daily. Room was a good size. We had asked for a sea view and this was delightful. Mobile phone coverage was... more
Friendly, welcoming, good food.
We visited the restaurant for my mother's 70th birthday so did not stay overnight in the hotel. We were made to feel welcome from the minute we walked in, we had my 2 1/2 year old grandson with us and he too was welcomed, which is not always the case in some venues. Lovely surroundings. Very friendly waiting staff. Food was well presented and tasty. I would thoroughly recommend this hotel as a venue for a family meal or celebration.
ignore bad reviews
like other people on arrival at the golden lion was mystified by nasty reviews posted.have stayed in about fifteen shearings hotels over the years and can say this was the best.although whitby is still our favorite for location..The golden lion is very clean in all areas not just reception, the bedrooms and service to them were first class. The food was excellent with good choice and well cooked, the dining room was very clean & airy.As for the staff what a nice bunch of people reception very helpfull, waiters cheerful & eficient cleaners... more
A wonderful hotel
Together with my husband and another couple, I have just returned from a three night stay at the Golden Lion Hotel in Hunstanton booked through Shearings self drive holidays. I too had read the previous reviews and was rather anxious about what I would find. However we were all absolutely delighted with every aspect of the hotel. All the staff were exceptionally helpful and friendly. The food was very well cooked and presented and the menu offered a good choice of dishes. The wine was reasonably priced and if you did not... more
Read this and ignore the other reviews
Ignore all the other reviews of this hotel. We were not looking forward to our visit after reading those reviews but they could not have been more wrong. This is now a Shearings Hotel and has obviously been fully refurbished. The staff were very friendly and hard working. Our en-suite room was clean and well furnished. Meals were fine and generous portions. The hotel is in a prime position and we found the resort quite delightful with lots of information available to visitors. Overall a very pleasant break and we hope to... more
Needs improving
We stayed at this hotel which overlooks the coastline and green a while ago. The hotel was ok, poor service when we were there and the room was in need of sprucing up and redecoration. The room was directly above the main entrance which made it noisy, it was also very small and the bathroom was tiny. The window frames were ill-fitting and had huge chunks of paint peeling off them. The curtains were smelly and in need of dry cleaning. As we were only there for the night we didn't bother complaining, however the restaurant service... more
Good location, tired building
We stayed here overnight on the Sunday of August Bank Holiday Weekend. Parking a bit hit and miss but managed to find a spot in front of disused garages. Unfortunateley, not hotel's fault, car was dinged by a person, probably deliberateley given location of nick. No security, even a gate on the Car Park. Unlike other correspondents no problem with check in. Quick and efficient as was checkout. Room had an excellent sea view through a slightly dirty window. Room was a bit worn rather than dirty as was bathroom, window frame... more
Never again!
We recently booked a 5 night stay here, hoping to see most of Norfolk using this 'hotel'? as a base. First impressions were disappointing - nobody at reception, and after ringing the bell several times, we were confronted, I can't say greeted, by a young man who had neither personal skills nor knowledge of the hotel, and was unable to offer us the room we had been promised - but he didn't really know why. Our room did have a sea view (but dirty windows). It was tired and needed at least a good clean. We asked for clean towels but... more
Pigeons' Revenge
The Golden Lion Hotel has fantastic sea views and is within walking distance of all local amenities. Unfortunately the surly, inattentive, unprofessional staff really let this hotel down big time. We were made to feel like we were an inconvenience, not paying guests. We had to wait over 15 minutes to check in as reception was unmanned - it was only after my husband went in search of staff that we managed to check in and even then we did not receive an apology. The people in front of us walked out in disgust they had waited so long!<br... more
