Blue Horizon - Lovely people
Have just returned from a week at Blue Horizon - and yes, as some of the other reviews state, it is in need of a coat of paint and some of the basics could be fixed, but hey ho... our TV worked fine and our room was clean and comfortable. The staff are very helpful and I overheard them talking respectfully about the manager - that goes a long way. The location is great, easy access to everywhere, with restaurants nearby and opposite an OK beack. I believe you get what you pay for and in my view, Blue Horizon represents good value for money
Clean and Economical
Across from lively Rockley beach. Large living room dining room that goes largely unused. No couch to sit on and the t.v. set has one channel and hangs on the corner of a bedroom set close to the bed. So the living/dining room is not used all all. The tv gets one channel....CNN. But the accomodations including the pool and service is friendly and warm. If your looking for inexpensive and a place to crash...this place is ok.....balcony had partial views of beach as well...
Good Value Budget Traveler
We selected this 2 star hotel as part of a budget package with an outstanding price for Hotel & Air combined. We enjoyed our stay and it met our needs. It's located on Rockley beach, close to St Lawerence Gap (20 minute walk). Free Breafast limited to Orange juice, coffee, toast and some kind of local bread. Pros: Always kept extremely clean and the staff was friendly. We had a quaint ocean facing view room on the 4th floor with a King Size bed and lots of character. Plently of places to eat: Chiefette (fast food), Pizza, Chinese, Bubba's Sports Bar, St Lawerence Gap. Cons: Room dated, not on the beach (across the street), bed too firm, no elevator and substandard cable (5 channels - New Jersey U.S. based was limited but HBO ok).
Quaint hotel
The blue horizon is a quiet, clean hotel located just across the street from the public beach. The staff is friendly, and the food is good. A good place for a family or singles.
Good Hotel, Clean and Friendly
My girlfriend and i stayed at the Blue Horizon hotel for a week at the beginning of September and i had some reservations after reading the reviews posted on this site. The hotel is in a reasonable location with good access to beaches and restaurants. Some of the rooms are near the road and i suspect these could be noisy (they have just re-laid the road though). We were on the top floor (4th) of a block to the right hand side as you look at the hotel and had a clean large room with a pithced ceiling which made it light and airy. We also had a great view of the sea. The room was clean and the towels were replaced daily. Whilst we were there thr air conditioning seemed a little poor and i mentioned it to the front desk, we came back an hour later and the room was lovely and cool and stayed that way for the rest of the trip. The toilet did leak but was fixed the next day and they did us offer us another room for the night. I have heard terrible thingsd about the breakfast but we had the full breakfast included and it was not bad at all. You could choose from various juices and tea and coffee. There were lots of hot options and toast and fruit. Accra beach is nice (busy with locals at weekends) but Worthing beach is lovely and is only a 10 minute walk. Eating out is expensive but the food is divine, there are cheaper options near the hotel which were also reasonable quality. I recommend using the route taxis, you get to talk to the locals and they have music blaring out all day long. We went to St Lawrence Gap a few evenings where there are lots of quality restaurants to choose from (make reservations) and used the route taxis both ways on most occasions. Taxis are not too expensive and can be handy at times, the drivers are mostly friendly and helpful and stick to the agreed price (no meters in Barbados. Blue Horizon is not a luxury hotel but a small friendly hotel which for our stay was good value. The staff are helpful and when my girlfriend fell ill we received a call the next day from the manager asking if there was anything they could do to make our stay more pleasant. Try and get a room near the pool or where we were on the top floor of the separate block.
Really Bad
Dont be fooled by other reviews, I read some mixed reports before going to this hotel thinking that because we got 'a good deal' it would be Ok. It was not Ok and wouldnt stay there again even if it was free. The rooms are dirty, the breakfast is inedible, air con didnt work properly, too many problems to list and it is situated on a busy main road. There are far nicer hotels in the area for the same price. We actually moved after 3 days to Casuarina Beach Resort and it was lovely, The Blue Horizon spoilt the first 3 days of our holiday.
Great Hotel for the Price
We paid $90.00 US per night for this hotel which included a continental breakfast. What we needed in a hotel in Barbados was somewhere clean, close to a beach amd in a good location for exploring the island, Blue Horizon met all those expectations. It is not a luxury hotel, but a basic hotel which allowed us to explore Barbados and still be comfortable during our stay. The room was always clean, the bathroom had no mildew or mold and worked well. The breakfast was very basic, but satisfactory for the price. We stayed in the yellow building overlooking the beach, had a view of the beach actually and a kitchenette. I loved that Rockely Beach was just a stroll across the street and that we could catch a dollar bus or regular bus right ourside the hotel. Next door was Cheffette restaurant and we could walk to Bubbas Sports Bar and other restaurants close by. St. Lawrence Gap was a 5 minute bus ride away as was Sandy Beach which was another great beach. We rented a jeep an explored the island, went to Oistin's for the fish fry and Harbour Lights disco. As you can see we just needed a place to sleep, shower and dress, and Blue Horizon met all those critieria. We did not need or expect a five star hotel, and we were very pleased with our stay.
Deceptive lobby!
I stayed at The Blue Horizon hotel from the 29th of march to the 4th of april 2005. The lobby looked nice and well-kept so hopes were high for the apartment my partner and I recieved the key cards to. On arrival however: the floors were stained and grubby the toilet leaked (something I failed to notice until the last day) there was a dead frog on the window sill behind the bed which looked like it had been there for at least 2 weeks there was a layer of dust between the cushions on the sofa the cleaners managed to ignore the "do not disturb" door tag on more than one occasion the kitchen surfaces needed a wipe down as there were cup stains on them the walls were paper thin giving the impression you were sharing a single room with the neighbours the hotel staff seem preoccupied with issues other than their job during working hours the sink plug didn't have the usual little rod that you push down on for drainage. It was broken and hadn't been repaired so I had to lever it open with a small bit of plastic each time and finally the entertainment was provided by a "band". The band was one man with a steel -pan (original) and a tape recorder I stayed in room 220 so it is only this room that I can speak for. If the above issues were addressed, this place would be excellent. So much potential.
Could be a great little hotel
A "Faulty Towers" kind of hotel. "Cool" exterior building, pool area and veranda restaurant. Colorful room (#426) in blues and yellows with a red tile floor. However mildew on lampshades, throw pillows(on chairs) and back of curtains. Bring Lysol spray. Leaky air conditioner. I had to place a towel on the floor to catch the dripping water. Bathroom clean but faucets deteriorating due to salt air. Shower curtain new. Plenty of clean bath towels, beach towels and linens. Balcony overlooking the pool with a side view of the ocean across the street. The beach is beautiful! Down the street is a wine store (good variety), a convenience store, a pharmacy and a fast food place called Cheffette's with a good salad bar. Around the corner is Burt's Bar with the best banana daquiri's ever! Housekeeping staff super friendly. Rest of staff so-so. Restaurant food is pretty good. The free breakfast however takes some getting used to. Cereal, toast, ultra sweet juice and bad coffee. I felt quite safe traveling alone. All in all I had a really good time. I knew what to kind of expect from reading other people's reviews on this site.
Good stay
Just returned from Blue Horizon hotel in barbados. Booked through an auction. We were upgraded to a complimentary one bedroom. The room was very nice and tastefully decorated with a balcony which offered a view of Accra or Rockley beach as it's sometimes called. We had a refrigerator, cooking range and microwave. Our only complaint was the older style bathroom. Our tiolet tank took forever to fill up and the bath tub was quiet deep. We thought the regular rates much too high . There was a nice pool which opened from 8am to 6pm. It was never crowded. Most guests were older people. There was entertainment only once a month. The free continental breakfast was so so, not much variety but if you wanted a bigger breakfast, it was available for an additional charge. The restaurant was good but didn't seem very busy. Housekeeping staff didn't seem too friendly but did a good job. The hotel's right across the street from the beach and next door to a popular fast food restaurant, Chefette. Just down the street is a small mall and a place call Bubba's which offers good food. The bus stop is right in front and will get you anywhere for $1.50 bajan. Rent a car or hire a cab to see the island at your leisure. It's worth it. If not try Adventureland safari or Island safari tour. They're both very good but we preferred Island Safari as we toured practically every parish and they take you through Bridgetown. You can access the free Bridgetown, shuttle from any hotel in Barbados. Atlantis submarines is great for both kids and adults. The Wildlife Reserve and Harrison's cave a good day tour. When you leave the hotel walk the opposite direction away from Chefette and you will get to the gap in about 15 mins. There's a Trimart supermarket, shell and Big B supermarket along the way. The Big B supermarket is a block around the corner from trimart and they will shuttle you back to the hotel for free if you call in advance. Be aware that the sidewalks may be lacking as you get closer to the gap so be careful. We walked it many times as it's close to our favourite beach called Worthing or Sandy beach. There're alot of good places to eat in the gap. Pisces for those with a sophisticated taste. The food was good but not plentiful. Coconuts, Bay Bistro, Just stop, Bean and bagel are all very good. There's plenty to see and do. We found Blue Horizon to be quiet but very nice and excellent location. There's a very good residential area behind the hotel. We will return to Barbados and would stay there again if the price was right.
