Let down by 'Best Western'....
My wife and I take regular short breaks throughout the UK and have come to rely on the 'Best Western' logo as a reliable indication of quality, comfort, cleanliness and service. Not any longer. This hotel should be demolished. Other reviewers have understated the the disgusting condition of many rooms. Since the rules of this site prevents me from passing on many horror stories from other guests I can simply confirm that I/we personally survived the hazards of... a dangerous bathroom light switch, damaged & filthy taps and washbasin plug,a... more
The good, The bad and the acceptable
We stopped as a party of 10 on the 18th March. The Bad......... The room although described as non-smoking had a strong smell of stale smoke (110). There was a wedding in the hotel which meant there was no bar for us to use and the staff failed to "wait" on us in the lounge like they promised us when we came downstairs. Luckily we were only waiting for our party to get changed so we left after 20 mins The acceptable The rooms were all of verying size although all being booked as doubles....some had a single bed... more
Everything up to Standard
I stayed at the Westminster for 1 night and the hotel was good in all aspects. 10 of us visited this hotelon a drinking weekend and thought it was ok some rooms are quite small but if you get a room on the back of the hotel these are quite spacious. Don't go to the Weatherspoons in Chester service is poor
An experience!
You need a sense of humour when staying in this hotel. My wife and I stayed 4 nights. Lights would go on and off at will, television would change channels magically, one fire alarm when staff seemed as much at a loss as guests as to safety procedures. Our room was well heated while others were freezing. Food was good and well presented. Staff pleasant particularly Deputy manager(Anne). Very convenioent for city centre and railway station.
Definetely Don't believe all you read
I was wary after reading other reviews, but pleasantly surprised with my stay, we paid a £20 upgrade on check in and enjoyed a lovely night in a brand new Executive Double room with king sized bed. Breakfast was very well presented and quite honestly one of the tastiest Hotel breakfasts I've ever had! Dinner in the evening was also very good and well managed. The Lounge is currently being refurbished but staff went outof their way to serve drinks to our table in the "Mock Lounge" which was actually in a conference Suite. Only the... more
Actually Not Too Bad
I was pleasantly surprised at this hotel after reading previous reviews. It has obviously had a recent refurbishment and generally the interior is fresh and rooms are clean with everthing required. The staff were helpful and polite and breakfasts were very well prepared and hot.The exterior of the building is Victorian and needs some work and the Santa outside in the middle of January is a bit bizarre! The hotel is situated next to the main railway station with it's sister hotel the Queens hotel is across the street. The city centre is an easy... more
Dirty Hotel
A party of eleven of us stayed at this hotel in May. Two of us had to be moved to another room, as the one we were in was filthy. Another room wasn't cleaned for two days, despite requests to the management. Best western hotels and the hotel itself have not replied to letters and emails, except to say that it would take them "a few days to investigate". This was in May. Drinks in the bar were extortionate, and as we had elderly people in our company we were forced to stay in and endure the dreadful entertainment.
Faulty Towers
The staff would benefit from some form of customer service training. The girl behind the bar at the time would also benefit from going on a food hygeine course. She actually used her hands to put ice into our drinks. Besides handling dirty money where else would her hands of been prior to that! When asked to use tongs or a glass to decant the ice, she did so into dirty, dusty glasses! How often are they all taken off the shelf and cleaned? During our visit there was a disco/wedding party taking place guests should be informed of this... more
Not one I would rush back to
Staff badly in need of some customer service training. Hotel room was small and cramped with dreary decor and broken lamps. Bathroom was basic, cheap and nasty with loose fittings and a shower attachment that shot out and soaked everywhere. Doors and floorboards creak and you will awke with the early risers and stay awake because of the continuous noise. The bedroom doors offer no soundproofing. The lift announces "doors opening, doors closing" with monotonous regularity just in case you had thought of dosing off again.<br... more
Don't judge the book by the poorly-maintained cover
This is an old-fashioned hotel, one of several on City Road used by coach parties. Unfortunately, it's not the finest example of a Best Western hotel to be found in the North West. The décor and furnishings are tired but thankfully the interior is better maintained than the exterior, which could do with some TLC. There are many better establishments in Chester
