a pleasent stay
My wife and i have just returned from our visit to this hotel. Yes there were a few small problems, but the staff and management bent over backwards to put any issues right. It was a busy weekend, the hotel was full, but the staff managed well. The food was of a good standard, and the staff were friendly and polite the whole weekend. As previous reviews this is not a five star hotel, but instead a charming place to stay in a wonderful part of the Peak District. If you are planning walking break in the Dovedale area, then... more
Shocking
Terrible. We stayed with a large party on the 10th march, which when we booked we were told that all the rooms had a double bed and a single bed in so we booked the appropriate amount of rooms we would need. When we got there we were all booked into double rooms, which they did sort but it was a lot of moving around. The rooms were dated and dirty. The whole hotel was dated. The staff, especially at reception were incredibly rude, and bar staff didnt speak english and didnt know what a baileys was, which cost £8. Food was unbelievable,... more
dont go there
i am shocked to see some good reviews of this hotel. it was a nightmare. i came home in tears at the thought of just spending £300 on a 2 night stay in this place. the website makes it out to be 5 star luxery but the truth is that its little more than a shoddy back street B and B making its self out to be somehting its not. our list of complaints was endless. none of the staff speak more than 2 words of english and are rude scruffy and ignorant. on the over priced eving menu there was only one Vegetarian starter and main course so I... more
Management response from Peveril_Man

Although we do welcome reviews on our hotel, i did feel that this review was extremley un-fair on our staff and management here at the Peveril of the Peak Hotel. Having not even received a written or verbal complaint during your stay, i would like to appologise for the troubles that you have encountered during your time with us at the hotel. I would like to make a few issues clear All of my staff are fluent in English - in fact i only have one member of Polish Staff who was been at the hotel for 3 years and is now my restaurant supervisor and is highly complimented by many guests daily Some of our hotel bedrooms do have 3 beds in them ( 1 Double and 1 Single) this is purely to accommodate our high volume of families visiting neighboring Alton Towers and our elderly visitors who many of like to have a twin room. I would advise to you that if on checking in to any hotel you are not satisfied with any element of your room - that you notify management straight away as changes could have been made to make you more comfortable. Vegetarians Options - Our menu caters for Vegetarians every evening, for starters there is always more than one choice and again with the main course our chef can provide any dish that you would have liked, if only you could of made my staff aware of your dislike to our given choices on the evening in question. During our winter periods extra heaters are available at reception, if guests feel cold at any time - again this is just another normal hotel service that we offer If you would like to contact me personally either by telephone or letter, i would be more than happy to discuss compensation for your stay if you feel this is necessary. The Peveril of the Peak Hotel prides itself on a warm and friendly country house hotel, we do not at any stage try in pretence to be a five star hotel I thankyou though for having the time to air your views Kindest Regards Miss C Hambleton Peveril of the Peak Hotel

Very Pleasant Short Break
We have just returned from a very nice 3 day break at the Peveril, excellent food, good accomodation and very warm and welcoming staff Perfect location for walking, or visiting the sights of the Peak District and great offers to be had - £110.00 DBB I shall be returning soon!!!
Twee at a price
Twee is an english word that means cosy, old fashioned, middle class and slightly unusual. It has implications of being slightly odd and slightly outdated. Thats the Peveril. In many ways you cant fault it. I had an excellent nights sleep, the breakfast was very good, its in a beautiful location and it felt good. Against this, the evening meal was very average, the service clumsy, every window between the restaurant and our room had a dead insect in it and its all a bit tired. My biggest gripe is the cost. My dinner, bed and... more
Comfort Zone
We were looking for a short break in the beautiful Peak District. This hotel is in an idyllic setting, the question was whether the hotel could match the surroundings. It looked a little ramshackle as we approached, but the reception area was fine with comfortable lounge areas available for guests. Our room was a delight, big enough to hold a small settee and easy chair, it opened out onto a balcony. Nice touches were a widescreen LCD tv and a teapot. Yes- no need for teabags in a cup. The food was excellent and there were... more
needs improvement
The food at dinner was quite good with generous helpings. For breakfast I ordered scrambled egg - it was quite inedible. Staff mainly foreign willing and friendly but a bit amateurish. Bedroom comfortable and well-appointed but skirting boards need a coat of paint - same for the corridors - really scratched and scuffed.
Lovely hotel, but it runs by accident
Faultless setting near Dovedale and Thorpe Cloud. We visited as a family party of 25. An averagely furnished room with a lovely view. Bathroom tiles needed regrouting as they were a bit mouldy. Good quality toiletries. Organisation was not the hotel's strong point, with lots of mistakes on our bills the next day. We had a tasty, if expensive, dinner in the Dovedale Suite, but had to send back stone-cold vegetables not once but twice! Breakfast was excellent in choice and quality. The bar terrace has wonderful views and... more
Management response from A TripAdvisor Member

In response to the previous post for the Peveril of the Peak Hotel i would like to state the following on behalf of the staff and management of the hotel. We appologise if our check out system did not meet your expected standards during your stay - please appreciate that check out of large groups will always be more challenging and amendments to bills sometimes have to be made which may slow up the check out process - we have a dedicated and strong reception team that are able to cope with any situation that may arise. The management and structure of the Peveril of the Peak Hotel, has never been stronger - with a new Head Chef (previously one AA rosette awarded), New Operations Manager and a New Wedding and Conference Co-ordinator - we are all together looking towards the future will new ideas and an ever improving hotel....... we appreciate your patience during this busy time. Thankyou for your stay and i do hope that we can welcome you back to the Peveril of the Peak Hotel in the future

Beautiful location but disappointing hotel
Having just spent one night at this hotel it's easy to see what a great place it could be, especially given the beautiful countryside and grounds surrounding the accommodation. The driveway is attractive and makes the hotel looking inviting from a distance. However, the closer you get you can see there is a lot of work to be done before the whole place is brought up to date and to a high standard. We arrived on a cold, wet evening but the bedroom had not been heated. The restaurant lacks any charm or sophistication though it looks a... more
Has potential
This was our second visit staying in one of the more expensive rooms. The position of the hotel is good with great walking a step away, the rooms were clean although the outside and stair area could do with some work. There is a really good lounge area and small bar. However, what lets the place down is the poor food on offer (not cheap either). As an example the cooked breakfast is the smallest you could imagine (how much does it cost to give more then 1 teaspoon of beans!). The evening meal and bar snacks (when they eventually arrive) are... more
