Ok, so Latvia may not be everyone cup...
1 / 10
Nov 2006, Mr D Southall

Ok, so Latvia may not be everyone cup of tea, but we were 37 lads on a stag weekend looking for cheap beer and some fun nights out.
Firstly the hotel was clean, modern and food although not brilliant it was traditional so we couldn’t complain. The Latvian guy that organised our trip was excellent, and helped us out where possible, however the friendliness stopped there.
Everyone was out to make a fast buck off us. Taxi fares that we found should have been £1.50 were costing us £10! Drinks were £3 per pint of lager min, nearly all door staff were corrupt, taking money off you for the slightest infringement (smashing a glass fine £20, dropping a cigarette but outside on the floor £10).
As we were there some lads decided to sample the pole dancing clubs, well I can only advise you DONT buy any of the girls a drink unless you think £70 is ok for a vodka or £130 for a bottle of wine. A guy not with us bought a bottle of champagne but his £500 wasn’t enough! So he was marched back to his hotel by the rather large doormen for his credit card of which £4000 was taken.

Dec 2005, Miss J Atkinson

Riga is a beautiful place. Much like Prague, but not quite as many tourists - yet!
Everything is VERY cheap. It costs 20p to travel anywhere on a bus or tram, including getting from the airport to your hotel.
People are very friendly with most people speaking excellent English.
The food was excellent and again very cheap, I recommend the pancake houses where prices start at 15p and the local beers at £1 a pint.
There are some interesting museums, including the Museum of Occupation and the Open Air Museum (a short bus ride out of town).
I recommend doing the 'Art Noveau trail' mentioned in most guide books.
The only thing I would have changed is the room we were in the City Hotel. It faced onto the reception area so unfortunately we heard all the drunken people coming in at 3am and didn't get much sleep the first night! Apart from that, the hotel was very clean and we had a large, comfortable room.
P.S. If you go to Riga Autumn/winter time - wrap up warm!!
