Good Location
from girlie80
The sort of room you expect in a hotel chain, nothing individual about it. Nice walk in shower. Location is excellent - at the back of The Mailbox surrounded by places to eat and a tesco superstore next door. Broad Street is a fice minute walk, and New Street can be reached in under ten minutes. The Staff were friend;y, helpful, and efficient. No complaints.
Excellent location

We booked the Ramada Birmingham City as we were going to a concert at th NIA.After a bit of post code searching i discovered the hotel was pretty close to the NIA.In fact it was just a 10 minute walk along the canal with bars & restaurants along the way.So a perfect location if you're visiting the NIA. The hotel itself is at the top of the Mailbox, which is a shopping centre & there are loads of bars & restaurants on your doorstep & the Bullring is only a 10 minute walk.Perfect for a weekend break. The hotel itself took a bit of finding & the carpark is at the bottom of the building. Its an NCP carpark & nothing to do with the hotel. Its very secure & costs £15 per day.To get to the hotel from the carpark is a bit of a walk & you have to go to the top floor of the Mailbox via a lift & then a short walk to the hotel. Its not too difficult & worth it when you get there. The hotel is very reasonable & clean & the staff were very helpful. The room was spacious & clean & the bathroom was gleaming,no dirty tile grout or anything like that. My only complaint really was the room we had was at the back of the hotel & it was a bit noisy with traffic & people walking etc that seemed to wake us up in the night. But it is the city centre & as we were only there for 2 nights we put up with it as we couldn't be bothered to move.So it might be worth trying to get a high floor room at the front of the hotel. The other thing i will say is we had an ajoining door in our room to another room (obviously perfect for families) but if you're there as a couple & there are people staying in the ajoining room.........Then beware ! You can hear everything & i mean everything ! So if you get one of these rooms & you are a bit noisy then i suggest you be very quiet or ask to change your room. I did let the receptionist know about this. Other than that i couldn't fault the hotel really. So if you want to stay central at a reasonable price & you love shopping & restaurants & bars right on your doorstep then i recommend this hotel. We had a great weekend in Birmingham & i'm sure if you stay in this hotel you will too !
Ramada Jarvis, The Mailbox, Birmingham

We booked online where we got a good room only deal - the extra for breakfast is £20. The room was average but clean. However the main attraction of this hotel is the location. It is by the Canal and in The Mailbox - a shopping/eating/business area in central Birmingham. The shops are great with a good selection of eateries. However parking is very expensive and free parking is not included with your room.
Pleasant suprise

Booked this hotel fairly last minute as other plans fell through. Was slightly hesitant having seen some of the more recent reviews but as I was out for dinner in the Mail Box that night it seemed very convenient and was only for one night. Parked car in Mail Box car park as hotel had no car park £15 24 hr charge a little steep but very secure parking. People has commented on how difficult it was to find the hotel but from the car park it was clearly marked and we has no trouble finding it. Check in was effortless and staff were pleasant. The room we had was very neat and tiday. The bed was probably only double size and not king but not really a problem. From the room we also had very good views of the wheel and views towards symphony hall. I would happily stay here again and would recommend it to others.
terribly rude staff
from A TripAdvisor Member
I stayed in the Ramada a few days ago with a friend from Australia. The rooms are fine; typical 4 star quality and service was okay until I came to check out and discovered I was being charged 2 pounds for phone calls, which I never made. When I tried to dispute the calls, the staff were rude and said that the phones were all computerised and an error could not have been made - they effectively accused me of lying. They had my credit card, and simply billed me the extra calls regardless of my protests. Either thier computer systems is **cked up or there was someone in my room when I was out to dinner. Either way, I would never, ever go back there. I know it was only 2 pounds, but I did dispute these charge and the staff should not be so rude.
Wouldn't go back

The hotel is located in The Mailbox area and it is very hard to find if travelling by car. We had to stop and call the hotel for more detailed directions. Even then, they didn't mention how to access the hotel. You have to go to the car park, take a lift, go through the shopping centre and then go back outside to access the hotel's entrance. We arrived at around 2pm and were assigned a room. When we got to the room, we noticed it was a room for the disabled, with lower furniture, no bath and a special shower. So we went back downstairs and the explanation we received was that the regular rooms weren't ready so they assigned the disabled room. They should have asked us first, if we wanted a disabled room right away or preferred to wait for a standard room. However, they just assumed that we would accept a disabled room without asking us first. Disabled rooms are great for people in wheelchairs but it felt like a hospital to us. So we had to take our bags downstairs to reception again and wait for our room. The staff were not helpful at all and seemed annoyed that we didn't want the disabled room. We were there on business and their Internet facilities didn't work the whole time we were there. There are several hotels in the area so we won't bother staying at the Days Hotel again (now known as The Ramada Birmingham).
Not so good..

I decided to stay here for a Xmas break based upon the reviews on this website. Unfortunately the service I experienced was poor. The main doors were locked when we arrived at 7pm, no-one at reception and after 5mins somebody came to let us in. We booked a non-smoking rooms, it stank of smoke. I asked at the bar for some ice and wine glasses and was told that they should charge corkage but as it Xmas would let me off. I've never known a hotel charge for ice before! Overall, staff were unresponsive and uninterested. Since becoming a Ramada, this hotel has gone downhill and I would not recommend.
Canal side living
from ashbymouse
Good location at rear of Mailbox overlooking the refurbished canal basin. Expensive parking in the modern basement of The Mailbox shopping centre immediately adjacent to hotel but unless you know where the hotel is, if you arrive by car without directions you would probably have trouble finding the roadside entrance as the canal entrance is only for pedestrians. There is layby beside the road entrance but its usually fully parked. You would have to double park and block the road while your companion unloaded the luggage and took it into the hotel. If you park under The Mailbox then its easy to trundle your cases via the car parklift and through the shopping centre to reach the hotel via the canal entrance. Rooms are pleasantly decorated in pastel mint green and blue and are modern, clean and functional. Bathroom trifle small but nice. Good large shower compartment as opposed to bath and clingy shower curtain so often found in hotels. Doors close quietly which makes a change - who wants to hear doors slamming in the early hours of the morning. Breakfast is reasonable with hot and cold offerings although it has a cafe "feel" with basic tables and chairs although there is a large flat screen TV quietly on at one end. I have stayed in this hotel several times this year and have no complaints other than the building work immediately opposite which starts at an early hour. However, this will cease once the building has been completed. There are several restaurants adjacent the hotel and the canal network is charming. Very close to Broad Street nightlife, the NIA and the Bullring and shopping centre. Good location, nice clean hotel, particularly ideal for lone woman travellers as good pasta and piza restaurant right next door (not to mention the convenient tiny tesco store on the other side if you are happy to have just a sausage roll and yoghurt for dinner). Its just been taken over by Ramada. Lets hope it does not deteriorate. If you plan to arrive by car make sure you get a map beforehand!
Nice Hotel
from HopAustin
Stayed at the hotel Nov 27 - 29, 2004. Other than the construction noise on my side of the hotel, it was a very pleasant experience. The rooms were new and clean. The breatkfast had some variety with cereal and the other things common to a British breakfast. The front desk staff was helpful and the location is very convenient to most things downtown. The hotel is located at the Mailbox and the restaurants there are excellent.. You should make reservations for the evening meal. On my next trip to Birmingham I will stay there for certain.
excellent location!

I stayed at this hotel for two nights recently on a business trip. The hotel is situated in the Mailbox complex is Birmingham City Centre which is an excellent location (but £10 a day parking charge!). The hotel is of a similar standard to Travelodge / Travel Inn. Room was of a good size, clean (but not spotless). I was surprised that there was only a shower and no bath in the bathroom. There was some noise at night from the bars and restaurants below, but this wasn't a real problem. I paid approximately £65 a night which I was told (on the website) included breakfast. However on arrival I was informed that this wasn't the case and the website "should have been changed". Overall this is a budget hotel in a fantastic location. I'd stay here again, but I'm not sure that it would be my first choice. Nearby Travelodge is much cheaper and doesn't charge £20 for 2 days parking!

We spent 3 nights at the Ramada Birmingham over the bank holiday. We were on a dance weekend. The food was very good. The staff are on the whole very friendly, especially Tony in the bar. This is a large sprawling hotel. It is set in lovely grounds, but the hotel itself is... more
