Definitely 2 Star but if you want a cheep fortnight in the sun and can put up with the creepy slime-ball – go for it.

"I stayed at the Berkan Hotel for two weeks August/September 2009.

I read many negative reviews before going but for a 2 star hotel it wasn’t too bad for a total of £280.00 half board including flights and transfers.

I was on the top floor, which was empty apart from myself so was able to take a few photos of various rooms so you can see for yourselves that many of the negative reports about the state of the rooms are not really justified. However, the rooms are very hot and if you leave your door open it is very noisy as you are close to a busy road and there is also music blasting out until the early hours. Air conditioning is £5.00 a night if you want it. A better option is to purchase a fan from one of the many supermarkets close by. There was one in Tesco, 5 minutes into the backstreets, for around £6.00.

The food consisted of soup followed by either spaghetti or rice every evening with either chicken, pork or fish with chips or mash, green beans and as much salad as you wanted. If you wanted more meat or fish you could go back up and get some. The problem I found was that everything was very overcooked. Breakfast consisted of Tea, coffee, fruit juice, salad and melon.

Most of the staff were friendly and helpful apart from a creepy slime-ball who was presumably the head drinks waiter who seemed to be in charge of the younger waiters. He was also responsible for trying to attract passing holidaymakers in to buy food or drinks. From what I saw he frightened more away than he got in! On the first night I had had a few drinks before dinner and didn’t particularly want a drink with my meal. He made a right fuss, trying to tell me I had to buy a drink with my meal. I soon put him in his place and he never spoke a word to me for the rest of the two weeks. I was pleased about that.

The Hotel is situated around 20 minutes stroll to the harbour area where all the nightlife is. It is barely two minute across the road to a long sandy beach but it is quite difficult to get into the water in that particular area as there is a rocky shelf right on the shoreline. I preferred to stroll for 15minutes to the right of the Hotel down to the Town Beach which was reasonably quiet, free sun beds, showers, changing rooms and easy access into the sea.

Forget about the Hotel pool. It is small, cold and only gets the sun until around 9.30am.

Verdict? Definitely 2 Star but if you want a cheep fortnight in the sun and can put up with the creepy slime-ball – go for it.

having been to Turkey many times we...

"having been to Turkey many times we are well aware of basics within 2 star hotels. However, we were pleasantly surprised by our hotel; the staff were friendly, restaurant area and food good. Our bedroom was cleaned everyday with finishing touches to the bed linen.

The only down side was the pool area being a little unsafe especially for children. A good central position to many amenities, disappointed with beach, very shingle like and unable to walk along the waterfront.

Overall hotel a 9 out of 10.

Thanks staff

Worst Hotel I have stayed in

"We stayed here in July/ Aug 2008, check in was quick and painless. We were on the first floor even though I had asked for the top floor consequently the view was rubbish. The room was very basic with only one child size MFI type wardrobe for two people. Mould grew on the cramped bathroom walls and the ceiling was damaged from what looked like a leak from above. The shower fittings were loose and the glass shelf had been re-fixed several times without filling in the previous holes making the bathroom look very tatty. Water would not run at all on occasions and others complained of this also. Air con cost about £30 which I had for two weeks. We were half Board and the evening meals were adequate to good but there was no desert on offer and all drinks had to be paid for, breakfast on the other hand was abissmal with the same offering every day of olives, boiled eggs, the same cold meat , cheese and tomatoes. Some variation would have been nice. The pool at the rear was very small and looked to me unclean, niether my son or myself used it although others did. There seemed to be a lack of Health and safety at the hotel with people being allowed to sit in the pool smoking and drinking from real Glasses with the pool being open till late and even all night. The exterior and the restaurant of the hotel were very nice but once you went past this to the rooms, it was very different, I got the impression that the owner just wanted to rake in the money but not spend any of it on improvements. why some people return year after year I have no idea, I can only imagine that they have not sampled anything better and think that this is as good as it gets. One couple told me that they had stayed there before but because the rooms were so basic had booked in to a different 2star hotel this year and it was so much better, I was even told that a window had fallen out last year and dropped in to the pool. The staff are all very friendly and fun to be around, but then again all the Turkish waiters and bar staff are friendly wherever you go. When you order drinks they are booked to your room but you are not given a receipt, so make a note of what drinks you have had otherwise you have no proof when you get your bill at the end of your holiday. The same applies for the internet, you just sit down and use it and you get the impression that it is for free. Not so, they make a note of your use and bill you at the end, we were asked to pay for 5 hours worth which I knew we had not had so questioned this charge. This hotels rooms are very very basic without any excuse. The food is ok / good but little choice, it is noisey, the dog barks during the night and the curtains do not keep out the light so take a mask. Close to beach, linen changed daily and room tidied but on occasion not till evening time. Move the bed if you want to see how well it has really been cleaned I did and could see that it had not been done for a while."

Turkish Delight! or not?

"When we arrived at the Berkan at 8.00 a.m in the morning after a five hour journey from the airport (we all had to sit on our coach at the airport for two hours whilst they waited for another flight to land!) and saw how basic our room was I thought I had made an awful mistake in going there. The next day we were offered a bigger room and after a few days we really began to enjoy our stay there. The staff were so helpful and we ate at the hotel almost every night. The food was cheap and I don't think I have ever stayed anywhere where the owners and staff were so friendly. However I do have mixed feelings about the hotel, the rooms are very basic but clean, the pillows are so hard we named them 'boulders!' The hotel quite clearly needs a major facelift and the swimming pool badly needs new sun loungers and the shower fixed. Having said that, we really did have an excellent time. I went with my gorgeous 17 year old daughter and had to fight the turkish men off but it just made the holdiay more amusing. Woudl like to go again but not sure about those transfer times."

Berkan Hotel Alanya, Turkey

"We arrived at the Berkan Hotel at 8pm after a two and half hour transfer from the airport and check in was smooth and quick. You give in your Passports but they are returned the following day. Our cases were taken to our room on the second floor as there is no lift. The room was basic, three beds, wardrobe, two bedside cabinets and an on-suite bathroom which had seen better days and was very small. The shower was also full of mould. My husband showered in his sandals every day. However, the room is cleaned daily and towels and sheets changed once per week. The hotel owners/managers do have a small dog and I have to admit to being woken on more than one night by it's continual barking at 3am. It can also be noisy with returning guests late into the night.

There is a hair dryer provided but no kettle or tea/coffee making facilites so if like us, you like a cuppa, take your own. We were also informed that air-conditioning would be ten lira per day, which is roughly £35.00 per week, so please budget for this as without it the room would be unbearably hot and stuffy..

We choose half board and the food was fine. It is self service and you can go back for more. Each morning there was boiled eggs, cucumber, cheese and tomatoes plus lovely fresh bread and jam. Tea and coffee plus juice is provided.

The evening meal served between 7pm-9pm consisted mainly of pasta or rice plus salads. However, on the evening there is no tea/coffee or juice provided and all drinks ordered wil need to be paid for. A 1lt bottle of water or small glass of coke was 2 lira(just under £1) Beer or fresh orange juice is slightly more. Be aware that the hotel restaurant is open to non residents and getting a table for dinner can be difficult.

The Hotel also had signs up everywhere saying not to bring food or drink into the hotel but this was ignored by most of the guests and there are two excellent supermarkets, 10mins up the road. Water is 0.17c here and cold and you can buy goggles for the pool at 7 lira. The local small shops were charging 25-30lira, so try the supermarket first. There is internet access at the hotel but again you are expected to pay and there is a minimum charge of 1 lira even if you use it for 5 minutes.

The hotel has a pool at the back which on first inspection looked a little small but was certainly adequate for our needs and cools you down nicely. The beach is minutes away but can be unbearably hot and you will need to pay for sunbeds and umbrella's. Water sports such as paragliding, banana boats and jet ski-ing can be accessed here. Cost varies but jet skiing was 20 lira for 15 minutes and the banana boat is 10 lira each but you only get about five minutes.

The resort of Alanya is on your doorstep and there are plenty of local restaurants and shops. Take a right after the taxi rank and just keep walking. We enjoyed a lovely Sunday lunch, beef and yorkshire pudding at 'Big Bens'. The cost with drinks for three was 63 lira, so about £30, not cheap but the meal was lovely. For a cheaper alternative try the Green River restaurant, the staff are lovely and the meals were superb. You can also access the internet for free.

On the whole this was a good holiday, the hotel was basic but we didn't pay a lot and it is only two stars, the waiters and staff were fine but If you want a bigger pool and a little more luxury don't book here.

Berkan Hotel, worth reading!

"We arrived at the Hotel 22nd June 2008, myself and my son booked 2 single rooms. Arrived after a very long journey, staff very welcoming indeed. I was put into a single room on the 2nd floor which absolutely stank of Sewage and nearly made me sick so I returned to reception and asked to be moved. After a bit of discussion they agreed to move me to the 3rd floor which was much better and no smell!! The hotel rooms were very basic indeed, no kettle in the room which disappointed me as we brits like our bre 1st thing in the morning! Breakfast consisted of Orange Juice, Bread, olives, tomatoes, cucumber, eggs, "Ham" and coffee, it was well laid out and was rather tasty! I would highly recommend that If you're staying at the hotel that you pay for the air conditioning (Which cost £25.00 per room per week), we couldn't have done without it it was soooo hot and sticky!! I alos paid 3 lira per day to put my money and passports in the safe which I think also is worth it! I have to say that the hotel staff were ever so helpful, especially Hazam and Kamal and the gentleman who ran the hotel with his wife was always cheerful and chatty! As the hotel is solar power the shower water was freezing cold in the morning but boiling hot in the evenin, not ideal but it was ok. We didn't eat at the hotel in the evening as we were on a B&B basis but I would highly recommend the VIP international restaurant about 1 Km down the road on the right hand side and also the Regal restaurant just a bit further down. I'm not quite sure If I would return to the hotel, I wasn't entirely satisfied with it, it was just like going back to the 70s if you know what I mean! Alanya was beautiful but very hot and god help you if you travel in July and August as it's going to be unbearable with the heat!! I hope my review helps you a bit!!!"

The staff make you feel very welcome and try to make your stay as pleasant as possible.

The rooms are vey basic and could do with some work done on them but for the price paid not bad.

The food from the menu was very good and would recommend for you to eat here.

Lovely welcoming place to stay

"We are so pleased that we chose this hotel. The rooms are very basic but clean. We were allocated a room on the top floor (no lift) but asked to be moved to a lower level. No problem. We were moved immediately. Value for money. Just across the road from a lovely beach. Shops and restuarants all around. The staff were so friendly and nothing was too much trouble. You get the feeling that you are staying with family. We will be staying there again. The food was excellent. We were on a half board basis which we have never done before. So pleased that we did. Food tasted so fresh and was delicious. The owners and the staff should be congratulated."

what a fabulous time

"My little sister and I went to Alanya in July and found the staff at the Berkan hotel to be extremely friendly and helpful at all times! we have made some great friends! our room (although very basic) was cleaned everyday and fresh towels were on hand whenever we wanted them, our cleaner was lovely but spoke no english but she took us under her wing anyway!! the location is super, right across the road from the beach, loads of restaurants nearby and about 20 min walk into the main town! beware ladies, that the waiters in all the restaurants are quite pushy but that is not unsual in turkey! we would definitely go back! x"
