Metropole Hotel

.... but what's that smell? Cabbage, perhaps? If it weren't for that, I would give Hotel Metropole an 'excellent' rating. Quite reasonable (@ $80 USD for a single room with 2 twin beds), great Rossio location a few blocks from the water, very good breakfast (eggs, bacon & sausage included), and scenic views of the castelo from the small balconies of rooms facing the square. We had a reservation for a week in a deluxe room. Checked in on a Saturday. Lisbon was having a big music affair all weekend, so the hotel rented our room out for Friday and Saturday nights, They put us in a room just big enough to hold a tiny double bed in the back of the hotel with bars at the window. The hallways were grungy - dirty carpets, dirty wallpaper, dirty paint - and our room was the same. We moved to the fantastic Hotel Avenida Palace (a block away) the next day. It was wonderful.

Great location - right in the centre of Lisbon with easy access to airport, shopping, taxis and restaurants. Twin room was well kept and much larger than expected (you get two Fully separate beds - not inches apart as in some hotels) with new tv, mini bar and nice furniture. Bathroom nice too. Standard rooms are located towards the back of the hotel so they are quiet but you dont get the view of Rossio Square. The hotel is located very centrally, staff are friendly and helpful and the rooms are very nice indeed. There is a pleasant lounge overlooking Rossio and free Internet access. Both the rooms and the bathrooms are spaceious and simply but tastefully decorated in 1920s style. We paid 98 per night for a double room, which is good value for the money.

Just got back, and loved Lisbon and Hotel Metropole. Great location. Bus from airport dropped us at the front door! We appreciated the friendly, helpful staff, elevator, computer availability, and buffet breakfast. Rooms very clean and larger than expected. When I e-mailed my request, they responded with a price considerably less than posted rates. DO NOT go to their recommended restaurant for Fado...overpriced, poor show, mediocre food, and snobby waiters! We should have stuck to guide book recommendations. Other than that, I would... more

The rooms are nice, the staff are friendly, but make no mistake: you are paying for the location. Located right in the center of town, there is no hotel with better access to all that lisbon has to offer. The breakfast is what you'd expect from a small European hotel, and the free internet is a nice touch. Can't go wrong with this hotel.

The Hotel Metropole is located on Rossio Square in the oldest part of Lisbon and what a magnificent location it is. The staff is pleasant and very ready to help and all spoke excellent English. All rooms are different and we were in one in the back overlooking one of the narrow streets with a view of the hillside with its maze of streets to explore - lots of charming places nearby with entertainment. If you want to see the city by day or by night, there is no better place to be. Great hotel, where you do not feel like another number...good attention to detail, and great customer service. Definitely recomend it.

I just love this hotel and want to come back as soon as possible. Lisbon is a great place, the staff is friendly and harm, always available to help us finding great places to visit and eat. For me it's full of charm and style.
