Coombe Abbey Hotel Reviews

May 2011, jc

We just came back from Coombe having stayed for two nights paying in total £235. We stayed in one of the cheapest rooms and stayed on the first floor overlooking the Garden Restaurant.
When we got into our room, we were really excited as we had a bath tub in the room which was a great feature, filled fast and was lovely to sit in and watch TV. The bed was so comfortable, but got a sheet and an old looking blanket and really would have appreciated a duvet. Bed wasn't made to a high standard, a bit rubbish really, but it was clean and slept well so who cares.
The decor in the room is so dark, it was hard to tell where the carpet finished and the walls started as they were the same dark blue, even with all of the lights on, and I fell a couple of times up and down the steps to the bath tub.
Bathroom was lovely, quite clean, and expensive loo roll which is always a bonus.
Furnishings were a bit rubbish to be honest. Okay at first glance but but we found unpainted wood and bare nuts and bolts sticking out of the inside of drawers.
Staff were friendly, but I agree with another review that they are not 'over-friendly'. They seemed to do the minimum, it certainly was not 5 star treatment. Rooms did not feel 5 star quality.
Breakfast tasted good and it was a lovely setting with a beautifully laid table and tea cups with silverware.
First morning we got waiter service, second morning, waitor complained how busy they were so we served ourselves to breakfast; fine, but clear that wedding guest came before hotel guests.
Overall, we had a really lovely time and would probably stay again if we could pay £80 odd per night, but it is all show in my opinion. Certain areas are completely lacking and inconsistent with the whole vibe.

  • Advice: If you can afford to pay for a more expensive room, go for it. Make sure you visit the country park when it isn't so busy.

As good as it looked

We are from N. Ireland and we wanted to take a holiday at short notice. When I saw the Coombe Abbey on the Interent I thought it was rather unusual and probably too good to be true. However, we were very pleasantly surprised. As someone who is very interested in history it turned out be quite a place, beautifully decorated and full of character, not in a tacky way but a genuine attempt to present it in an appropriate manner given its past history, and in many ways original and authentic.
The staff were friendly and the restaurant was efficiently run and the food was excellent. The grounds were magnificent and beautifully kept. We would certainly return for another stay.

This is such an unusual hotel.
I have never taken part in the medieval events that this hotel regularly holds as they don't appeal to me, nor have I ever attended a wedding at this venue which this hotel appears to cater for regularly.
We went to stay for a quiet, relaxing break and though this venue is popular, nothing seems to intrude. A very calming atmosphere. I found this hotel to be an intriguing. This venue was once a monestary and would be ideal for any Harry Potter movie.
However, a word of warning, if you enjoy shiney, modern waggish hotels, this isn't for you!!!!!!
If you enjoy something quirky, unique with an historical vibe featuring with pleasant staff who are not too intrusive, (such an unusual feature nowadays) and complete with black cat (Reg), serving good food and comfortable surroundings, pleasant walks and a little bit of old fashioned magic, then this is for you.
I didn't experience any dusty rooms, or flakey rusting paint work and found the hotel is well maintained.
Will definately go back. Thank you

My fiance and I travelled to Coombe Abbey from London to meet with the wedding coordinator as we were thinking of getting married there. I was impressed with the hotel and the staff and the food was fantastic! The hotel plays on the old cistercian history but does it well. Our room was clean and very unusual. The whole place is very dark and gothic which adds to the atmosphere of the place. We loved it and decided that we would get married there. The hotel is surrounded by acres of land so it's a fantastic place to explore. We paid £180 for dinner, bed and breakfast which seemed the best deal.

I have never written a review before...

Oct 2007, Ms J Maxwell

I have never written a review before but I wish I had seen a review like this before I went to Coombe Abbey. It was my tenth wedding anniversary, staying at Coombe Abbey ruined it.
The grounds are magnificent but the interior needs help. I paid £300 to sleep in a dusty, unkempt room in real need for a lick of paint. I have stayed in many hotels and expect a lot more than what I received for my money.
At £300 per night you do not want to feel as if you are staying in a hotel on the side of the motorway that should have cost you £50. After being there for 10minutes, I told them that I was unhappy as the room they had given me was not what I had expected.
The very nice receptionist sent a porter to take me to another room. However, after looking around the room I was still unhappy with the flaking paint work, rust on the radiator as well as mirrors so dirty you could hardly see your face. I went to reception and told them I would just like to leave and was advised that I would still have to pay the full amount as I had not given them 48hr notice.
So I stayed the night in a dusty room in need of new carpet with my skin crawling until the next morning. Again told them that I was unhappy and did not think I should be charged the full rate as I was so disgusted. In the end, I paid the full rate and went back to my nice clean house to take a shower.
I would advise anyone to visit the grounds as they are truly magnificent as long as they don’t stay in the hotel. After wasting £300 I am now going to look for a nice clean 5 star hotel in Birmingham to achieve the luxury that I am looking for.
