Old Bell Hotel reviews

On first impressions, when we arrived for a short stay at England’s oldest hotel, we were very pleased. This very quickly turned to disappointment when shown to our room it was full of the smell of fish frying and noticed outside our window was a flat roof with all the... more

Delightful old place
Stayed here for just one night recently but I have to say its a real little gem. Reception friendly and helpful, rooms really nicely decorated, as well as clean and well-stocked. The reception areas, lounges and dining rooms are classily maintained and the food is of much better than average standard (although I did only have the breakfast). I would certainly come here again for pleasure - which is not something I would say about the vast majority of places I stay at when I am away with my work. A perfect little getaway, ideal for a cosy... more
Nice And Simple
A Good Night Here. Nice room, Clean Sheets Good Bath, Quitev A Bad View Though. Staff Were Good, Friendly And efficient. Especially The reception Food was Homenade And Exquisite Bar Was Small And A Bit Dim But Very Comfortable. Lounges Very Comfy Overall A pleasant Hotel.
One of the best hotels in Wiltshire!
What an amazing transformation by the new owners! The food was stunning, rooms immaculate and service attentive. If you need to rest your head in the west please give this place a go. I do not think you'll be disappointed!
A mixed Review
When we arrived at the Old Bell, we were disappointed to see that our superior room was dilapidated and not too clean. But the room was large and in some ways comfortable. However, the most pleasant surprise came when we went to dinner. The food was superb. The people in the dining room were pleasant and one of the housekeeping staff was kind enough to make up a bed with a sheet and blanket, replacing the heavy duvet, which my husband and I found too warm. On the other hand, the reception staff was unfriendly and unhelpful. With some... more
Our second visit...
Having had a wonderful stay at the Old Bell about 18 months ago, we were itching to return and wanted to stay in the Abercolern (sp?) one of the deluxe rooms with a half tester bed and large bathroom(picture on the website). The public areas are still cosy and inviting with huge roaring fires, the restaurant food and service were again very good. We did notice that a few of the little extra touches were missing such as shower caps, toweling robes, however the robes were provided when asked for. I am probably being picky here but I did... more
Thankyou for a great night
Valentines night was not our first stay at the Old Bell but it was the first time we had booked the tasting menu in the restuarant. The food was wonderful and service excellent. The restuarant manager ensured that we were well looked after and everything ran like clockwork. We stayed in a room with a four poster bed at the front of the hotel overlooking the Abbey. The room was simple but clean (great linen on the bed) and included all the usual extras. We spend 40+ nights a year in hotels across the world and it's still a pleasure to stay... more
Wonderful stay at the Old Bell, Malmesbury
We have just spent our Christmas break at the Old Bell and both myself and my wife would like to personally take time to thank all the staff for making our stay a most pleasurable one. We found the hotel and our bedroom (Harry Brakespear) both excellent and the food was outstanding. The lounges and open fires added the final touches in making this Christmas one to remember. Every member of the staff made us feel at home and nothing ever seemed too much trouble. I can thoroughly recommend a stay at the hotel whatever the time of year.
Oh Dear!
It is unfortunate that what promised to be an unforgettable weekend turned into a total disaster for us all due to the management being less than courteous. We were there for a group meeting & dinner and sat in the public bar area adjacent to the restaurant for a pre-dinner drink. We were approached and asked to leave in no uncertain terms as they needed the table for other diners even though we too were dining in the hotel. As the bar is the only smoking area, and it is a public area, and we had actually been directed to this... more
Management response from SimonHaggarty

This reviewer was part of a group of 14. At 9.30pm the host of the party asked the person concerned to leave the party and suggested she return to her room. By 10.30pm I asked the person cocerned to retire to her room or check out. Shortly after 11pm I dialled 999 and requested police assistance who responded by sending 6 officers. Need I say anymore!! Old Bell, Oh Dear!
I have known this hotel for many years and was quite saddened to see it falling into disrepair. We checked in for three nights but had to check out early when the water supply packed up. The restaurant is still good but the menu is changed quarterly - bit like eating off a British Rail menu. If you are staying for more than 2 nights I suggest you find a restaurant elsewhere. The carpeting in the public areas is wearing extremely thin in places and in our bathroom peeling paint covered the ceiling. The toilet seat didn't fit properly and the... more
Great food and service
A treat! We stayed for just one night but had a lovely time. The service in the restaurant was like nothing we had never experienced before, very smart and curtious. My partner attempted to pour the wine but one of the waiters whipped in to do it for him. Really good food and relaxed but posh dining room. Our room was nice and clean and homely but a little smaller than we imagined from the brochure. The shower over the bath wasn't brilliant and when I ran a bath the water had little gritty bits that sank to the bottom of the bath. We stayed... more
