A good base for touring
We recently stayed at The Rising Sun as a central location for visiting some of the splendid National Trust properties in the area. The location of the Hotel high on Cleeve Hill is impressive, with magnificent views from all the public rooms over the Gloucestershire countryside and beyond to Wales, which were shared by many of the bedrooms, including the one which we had. We were fortunate in staying for a “2 for 1” concessionary offer for Bed and Breakfast, which made our two day stay outstanding value, we thought the full rate to... more
Don't bother! Noisy room, tired decor, bored staff.
We had the misfortune to stay in room 6, which is next door to the hotel's antique boiler. We were woken at six am to the very loud noise of the heating system, which didn't quieten down. I tried to find a member of staff to see if there was a bed somewhere - anywhere! - where we could sleep, but I couldn't find a member of staff anywhere. The hotel halved our room rate when I complained, but added to the filthy room, missing light bulbs, and lack of staff to let us in when we tried to get into the hotel after midnight, I wouldn't... more
Awful service - no food available even though "All day menu"
Arrived at Rising Sun tired and hungry after long journey on motorway. No staff in Reception. Had to use telephone in Reception to summon staff. After 15 minutes of waiting somone finally appeared to show us our room. Told by Receptionist that food was being served all day - no such luck. Wedding party monopolising kitchen staff. Told could be at least an hour before we could have something from the kitchen. Offered a bowl of soup by hotel manager. By this time husband and I had had alcoholic drinks so we were trapped there as not... more
I must have stayed in a different hotel from everyone else
I've read the other reviews of this hotel and I'm wondering if they are about the same hotel. Granted, they let me have the family room for just the two of us, at the same rate as a double room but that was just about the only good point. Despite that, I wouldn't describe the hotel as "inexpensive." Well, the view over the valley is spectacular as well. We arrived very late on our first night, which we had expected, and I was looking forward to a good night's sleep after a long drive. On opening the door to the room, the first... more
Great hotel with award winning pub attached !
Very comfortable, clean room. Very friendly and efficient staff and management. Great food and spectacular views. Award winning pub on the premises is a real bonus, serving real ales and wide range of meals. We take a lot of short breaks in England and this is one of the best hotels we've visited.
fantastic views
The hotel is in an ideal location, food great, staff friendly.. Would definately stay again when in Cotswolds
Great Hotel
This is a wonderful is an ideal setting on the hills above Cheltenham with some great views. The rooms had just been refurbished and was a good weekend for relaxing. We had a nice meal in the Restaurant and a few drinks which was well priced. The staff were great and there is a large car park.
Fantastic hotel
Myself and my partner recently stayed at the Rising Sun Hotel and had a wonderful time. We booked on a late deal, so were unsure where we would end up, but, the location and views are superb and the staff were very friendly and welcoming. I would recommend this hotel to anyone.
Lovely Weekend at the rising sun
My husband dave and I have just had a lovely weekend at the rising sun in Cheltenham. The staff were so friendly and could not do enough for us. The food was excellent and the room and views magic. We will be telling all our friends about this lovely place set in the beautiful Cotswolds to go and stay. Dave and Kath Allen.
Decoration Lunch
Sept 11th 2003 I took some guests to the Rising Sun for lunch as I have done several times when I have been in the area. It was disappointing to find that the decorators were in but was assured on arrival that lunch was still available. However, having been giving a menu we sat at a table and were completely ignored by the staff for some time. When I reached the limits of my patience, I went to the cocktail bar in order to place an order, but nobody came for quite some time. When I was eventually asked what I wanted (in a fairly brusque... more
