UNBELIEVABLE!

Oct 2011, FREDTHETERRIER

10 year wedding anniversary for my wife and I, therefore we wanted somewhere special.
Booked 2 nights - with rooms inside the mainhouse - agreed £250/night. At this level of I cost we expected something special!
Arrived 2pm - frosty receptionist bluntly told us we couldn't check in until 4pm.
Got there 4pm - had to carry luggage up to bedroom (excuse me - £250/night - was expecting porter service??).
Bedroom - DIRTY DIRTY DIRTY - dead flies everywhere, paint peeling, shower dirty, dead moths on carpet, light bulbs out, dodgy dribbles on walls, musty smells.
Asked to move rooms - told we could and were given keys (NO HELP GIVEN IN MOVING) - next room - just as dirty.
Went down to dinner - given the most basic tabled'hote menu - very very disappointing - could not understand what waiter was saying (no I am not racist) - got restuarant manager over who presented another menus.
Food was good - totally spoilt by level of noise - again £250/night to hear shouting and bad language on a table of 8 nearby......ALTHOUGH THIS WAS TOPPED OF BY A SCUFFLE BETWEEN ANOTHER FAMILY TABLE, which stunned the who restaurant into silence.
Breakfast in the morning - asked for tea & coffee - never came. Had to chase again. Breakfast from buffet table/self service - tasteless bacon/mushrooms/eggs/sausages.....I HAVE HAD BETTER AT A HOLIDAY INN....I repeat £250/night!
When't to settle up and on complaining met a very understanding manager who happily agreed to either halve the bill or give us another stay on him.....you gotta be joking! We settled up and left.

Okay for a stop over?

A beautiful old house, have added annexes and is adjoined to a new '4*' hotel supposedly. Very 'bitty' hotel. Think a map would be advisable to help you find where the restaurants / bar are. They use both hotels together so you are forever going back and forth between old and new. Though everthing is 'signposted' in the hotel it was not 'signposted' well. Lots of up and down stairs to the room, to anywhere in fact. Stayed in the Shrewsbury wing. Room was small, basic and clean. Certainly does not warrant the cost we paid. Similar room in a travel lodge would have been at least half the price. £70 for a 'bar meal' - burger, stifado and a few drinks! Not what I would expect to pay for a bar meal..Bar decoration, a mix of 60's and I really do not know what - quite bizarre. Breakfast- selection of full English and continental - buffet style. Overall did what we needed which was to have a room to stay in for a wedding close by (thankfully not at the hotel)but should we have booked this for a romantic / occasion weekend away we would have been sorely disappointed!

I stayed at this hotel whilst i was on a 4 day training course, The rooms are very small and smelt fousty.
On my last night of the course I went to bed early falling asleep with the television on, it was a hot night so I didn't have any cloths on. At 3.40am I awoke to find a male member of staff crouching by the side of my bed no more than a foot away from my face. He ran out of the room and I phoned down to reception to complain, the night manager said to me" Madam dont be so ridiculous, no one can get in to your room " he said this to me four times.
That morning I spoke to the hotel manager and he confirmed that he had entered my room 3.16am "looking for a hairdryer" what a load of rubbish, you dont go into someones room looking for a hairdryer, and it would not take that long !!!!
I also complained to there head office, and there attitude stunk, John Angus is the most arrogant man i have ever come across.
So no I would not recommend anyone to stay in this hotel and this incident is currently under police investigation

Arrived at the main reception and were in a queue behind two groups, both who were complaining about their rooms. Not a good start seeing as we hadn't even checked in yet! We booked through lastminute.com and were led to believe that the 'Falcon Wing' was an extension of the 18th Century main house when in fact it's an entirely different (and ugly) 1960's building that is on par or worse than a travel lodge!! The whole building smelled awful and felt more like a hospital or old peoples home than a hotel. The golf course is currently being dug up so plenty of attractive JCB's and diggers around. Nice. The swimming pool looked really unhygenic and absolutely no staff around in the building at all. Reception staff were all European and had no information about the surrounding area. Apparently the whole hotel used to be a training camp for Natwest so no wonder it's so pikey! We were told that certain buildings are being knocked down and rebuilt in a similar style to the main house. All very well but not much good for me and my girlfriend at the time and I won't be coming back in 5 years time to find out if it happened! Can't believe they are putting the falcon/archer rooms up at £119 a night, it's an absolute joke. I dread to think what the shrewsbury rooms are like! Maybe if you are staying in the main building it might be an okay place to stay but my advice is to go into any of the surrounding villages and stay in a beautiful Country Inn for half that price. We didn't even stay the night and booked a room in a lovely Inn in Woodstock instead. We felt really mis-led about our room from lastminute.coms website as well as the hotel's own website. Still waiting for a refund on the room but hasn't happened yet and have a funny feeling it's not going to. Thanks for that Mr (lying) Manager. I'm normally fairly skeptical about these kinds of 'review' sites as there are so many people with different standards writing on them that sometimes you just want to make up you're own mind. However on this occasion I think you should seriously listen to my advice and give this place a miss to avoid being really disappointed.
