A little bit of effort would go a long way...
I'll start the review with one word "disappointing". The hotel is listed at approaching £100 a night but a rate of £50 is widely listed on discount sites and at the hotel reception. The place itself is in desperate need of refurbishment throughout. They have spent some money doing the bathrooms but this really highlights how other areas could do with attention. This coupled with a lack of the management looking through the eyes of a customer (tables stored at the top of the stairs instead of out of the way, dirty woodwork in the bar... more
Bit of a Ding Dong
Stayed here on a bellringing trip. About 30 of us in total, which must have filled nearly half of the rooms for 2 nights. Previous experience of organising similar trips is that the management are keen to be as helpful as possible in order to extract maximumim cash - win,win for all concerned. Sadly they were not quite so accommodating at the Royal George. First the good bits. No complaints about the rooms, apart from the lighting which was generally agreed to be diabolical. Breakfast was good apart from a bit of a rush on Sunday morning... more
Comfortable place to stay in good location
A comfortable clean hotel in a good location, heart of the cotswolds about 10 miles away. Excellent breakfast menu including kippers and salmon!
Clean, convenient, good value
The Royal George Hotel is in Birdlip village, about 5 miles from both Gloucester and Cheltenham and just off the A417. I stayed in room 10, which had two single beds. The room was contemporary, clean and the bed comfortable. The bathroom was clean and had a superb power shower over the bath. Room 10 was in a wing adjoining the main bar area (the Royal George is one of Greene King's "pubs with rooms"). I booked the same night I arrived and paid £50 B&B (1 person) through Laterooms. At this price it's excellent value. I arrived too... more
Good for the discounted rate
I paid £64 B&B for two and at that price it was a fair deal. The bed was large and very comfortable. The room was of reasonable size with an old fashioned TV (not great reception). Room lighting should have been brighter. The bathroom was small and lighting dark and we found it a little uncomfortable. Our room was on the ground floor and was quite clean. Breakfast was good. Staff very polite, friendly and helpful. Dinner was also quite good. The hotel is in huge grounds so one does not feel congested. It is in Birdlip which is a quaint... more
great retreat in cotswolds
Stayed for one night on a late availability rate of £32 each B &B via the Old English Inns website- a good source of last minute bargains at country inns put on every thursday for coming week-end. Hotel is in a quiet village but handy for good road connections. Plenty of car parking and lovely grounds to the rear of the hotel-perfect for a short autumnal walk. Room was warm and adequate-not as bad as what other reviewers imply. The restaurant meal was superb-one of the best we've had with e xcellent service. A Shared platter for... more
Great pub hotel
The picturesque pub/hotel is set in gorgeous grounds and is nice and central for exploring the Cotswolds. The staff were friendly and let us know there would be live music from 9:00p.m. in the bar area on both nights of our stay, if we wanted to go along. The bar was furnished with squishy sofas which were fab for relaxing on after a long drive up from London. Our room was nice and clean, as was the bathroon which was equipped with a decent power shower - v nice! Breakfast the following morning was delicious, with a wide range of items -... more
Reasonable for the Money
We stayed here for 2 nights whilst attending a wedding at the hotel. Our room appeared to have been recently renovated and was ideal - good size, modern clean bathroom, great shower, good sized and firm bed etc. Some renovation work was ongoing in the hotel so I don't know if all rooms have been upgraded yet. Minor complaints include no satellite TV or radio in the room and hairdryer unable to reach the mirror from the socket (we and other guests moved the dressing table to compensate). Otherwise, the room was good,... more
A bit disappointing.
This is another example of a hotel that does not live up to it's website. The standard room was very basic and in need of updating. It was clean but some wallpaper was coming off and the quality of the decoration was poor. The bed seemed very small and wasn't very comfortable, it creaked a lot and felt like it might break at any time. The walls between each room are very thin and it doesnt take much to hear the next room's converastions. The bathroom is again, basic! Complementary Sky channels means one music channel and sky news... more
