MY EASTER WEEKEND AT THE BEAR OF RODBOROUGH IN STROUD I booked a few weeks ago and explained we have an 11week old baby and a two year old. Let me first start by apologising for our nationalities.I am Italian and my wife is American, so we have good service and a... more

Disappointing
Expensive, does not catre for non-smokers, pregnant women or the disabled.
NOT a foodie destination
We booked a last minute break here and from the website thought we were going to a country house hotel with amazing food. What we found was a 'nothing special' hotel, apart from our room (do make sure to book in the main part of the hotel) which had a good view. The guest lounge was reserved for a wedding party - so we had to make do with the bar, which is attractive, but let down by the staff who are all young and from eastern europe. For a hotel which advertises champagne breaks, we were taken aback to hear the young barstaff tell a... more
Excellent Hotel
Hospitable and first class without being snooty - thats this hotel Wonderful 4 poster bed, excellent food, great wine and wonderful location. - what more can you want for? The food is world class, all organic and all local - and they are proud of it (even telling you which farm provides which food). Beer is cask not keg - and the welcome is warm Its a down to earth Gloucestershire welcome - well done
Charming, but pricey!!
Myself and my partner have just returned from a long weekend away at the Bear. We loved every minute of our stay, and found the hotel very relaxing, charming and full of character. The staff were all excellent, although we have to say, that the bar service was a little slow, and the price of drinks (especially the wine) are far too expensive. Food in the resteraunt was excellent, and a lovely touch was that the chef actually took the time out after our meal to discuss if the meal had been satisfactory. Book your breakfast in... more
Restaurant is the Highlight
We have just returned from a 2 night inclusive break which was very good value for money. Hotel itself is quaint and for us the quality of the food in the restaurant was the highlight. Not many downsides, but this hotel is part of a chain and this shows with the 'system' driven approach and the number of foreign staff, the quality of which was mixed. The wait for afternoon tea when we arrived was unacceptably long (30 mins +), with the receptionist "unable" to take the order, and we had to ask for the champagne and chocolates... more
Characterful country hotel/inn
Enjoyed a three night stay at the Bear of Rodborough during a cold February week. The hotel is in the middle of a National Trust Common, fairly rural but picturesque. It had a lot of character, with log fires in the cosy 'Grizzly' bar, a separate oak panelled lounge and a pleasant, well appointed restaurant. Our bedroom was in the main building (rather than the more modern annexe), on the top floor with views on 3 sides, with a small ensuite bathroom that was virtually in a turret. The room was cosy and luxuriously appointed with antique... more
excellent hotel
We've been lucky enough to stay here twice now, once in the main part of the hotel, once in the annexe. A two night stay (our honeymoon) became a three night stay, we were so enamoured, and we'd been waiting for a reason to go back. Thanks to a superb Winter Warmer promotion, we jumped at the chance. The rooms in the main part have considerably more charm. These are the ones with half tester beds, sofas, antique furnishings. Those in the annexe have more space but less character. Not quite £26-a-night type rooms, but a little more... more
Not as special as we hoped
We picked this hotel for a Cotswold break as it had been recommended in a hotel guide book that had always been very reliable previously. It did have lots of good aspects but overall we were just a little disappointed. First the good points: - Great location, lots of good walks locally and Chichester just down the road was nice to visit for a little light shopping. - Great bar with good beer, nice local feel and welcoming staff - Good food in plentiful portions (recommend doing an all-in deal to save money) - Decent... more
Nice but expensive
The hotel is a typical quaint English hotel and is very nice. Our room was fine, clean and spacious but my mum stayed in a room which was tiny and claustrophobic. The breakfast was very disappointing! The portions were very standard and they let themselves down because of this I feel; had to ask for butter a number of times but at least the coffee was freshly brewed. Pastries were self service but not topped up quickly enough - shame. Staff were friendly especially receptionship. However, I ordered a plate of sandwiches for 5... more
comfortable and welcoming
The location of the Bear is perfect in a lovely bit of Gloucestershire countryside. We were given an excellent view from our room which enhanced our experience. The receptionist was charming and helpful; I suspect she was from South Africa and therefore was immunized from England's traditional anti-consumer culture. She was a big asset during our stay. My wife and I were too shy however to ask her to turn off the horrid music pounding out of the speakers in the reception area. The bedroom was adequate, perhaps a little small; but... more
