San Michele Hotel

A family run hotel, run for the family and friends. Guests seem unimportant. No air conditioning; bathrooms urgently need expanding and reburbishing. Breakfast minimal and uninspiring if you are there for a week. The lovely 25m swimming pool is taken up from Mon - Fri 9am - 12 noon for swimming lessons for 30 local children (+parents waiting around the poolside) - very noisy. think "some where in time", a grand hotel from the 30's..... it's actually older than that, but you get my drift. the san michele is a lovely grand dame. the opening grounds are lovely and the common areas are both elegant and relaxing. i found the staff very helpful; each person i encountered went out of their way to make my stay the best it could be. they were quick with directions, suggestions and smiles. this hotel also has wireless internet so you don't have to go hunting for a cafe open when you would rather be enjoying the... more

My girlfriend and I stayed here for 2 nights of a week-long holiday in Sorrento, Capri and Positano in late September. This hotel was by far the most expensive we stayed in, yet we found it to be the most disappointing. The views are fantastic of course, and the hotel has a certain run-down charm and the staff were helpful without being particularly friendly. This hotel promised much when we checked in. Good transfer from Naples Airport, immediate pick up at Marina Grande but it was all downhill from there. Our room had a great view across the bay of Naples but there was no privacy at all. You can hear everything from the neighbouring rooms and the bar below. Also you can hear the entertainment across the road at the Caesar Augustus. This does not make for a relaxing experience. Our room was small and was supposed to be a sea view room, but we had a view of a tree and the sea was visible to our left if we turned our head. The door to our room was so small my husband had to come into the room sideways. We attempted to upgrade, but the hotel refused. Having lived in Italy for several years and having visited Capri for weekend trips on four or five occasions, I'll vouch for this hotel as an excellent choice for a stay on the island. I love Anacapri (the more tranquil, romantic, and quaint section of the island of Capri) and usually rent an apartment there from a friend each summer. We spent a week at the hotel - picked from the website on quality and price. We got more than we expected. A good-size room, AC, with sea view and sunrise over Vesuvius. Clean, friendly, good atmosphere. Dinners were all great. Breakfast with a variety of foods. Waiters helpful with wine selection (not cheap). The bar mixed a mean Martini - great! Poolside relaxed (10-15 kids) with good lunch menu. Thanks for a great week!

Just returned from 2 weeks in Italy (3 couples). I booked this hotel from their website and we got more than expected. We were there for only 2 nights but would have been happy to stay longer. The view from the hotel is amazing. We were supposed to have 3 double rooms with sea view-that was stretching it a bit but the views from the balcony at the end of the corridor and the frist floor were wonderful. Just returned this week from this hotel in Capri, on my honeymoon. I booked on their website. The Hotel isn't the most luxurous on the island, but it does have all the basics, with nice, clean rooms ( with some excellent views), it's not in the highly over price capri town either but in the quiter town of anacapri ( a 1,30 euro bus trip (10 mins) from capri. I would highly recomend it if you are on a bit of budget, but would still love to stay on one of the most romantic islands in the med. Nice Pool, nice bar, and some of the best... more

At the outset I want to say that I grew up in Honolulu in the 1950s and 60s. I still have family in the islands so I travel to a tourist destination regularly. I was also a flight attendant for three years and traveled internationally. When I was 21, I lived abroad as a student in Rome and I traveled extensively throughout Europe. I mention this personal history because I think I know the travel scene from both sides.Capri is beautiful.
