Just returned from one week stay at...

Just returned from one week stay at the Drago. Staff are very helpful and friendly. Rooms clean and well presented. We stayed in the annexe on the 2nd floor. There is a fair amount of road noise however this is more than compensated for by the stunning views from the balcony. Worlds slowest lift.
More Germans than Brits, however they are mostly pleasant, some very nice. Buffet style meals are between OK and good, vegetables notable by their absence. Always lots of choice. Soups are generally good, always two pasta choices, very good. One fish course, not so hot and two meat choices, usually OK. Loads of salad and excellent choice of sweets.
Breakfast more for European tastes, but lots of fresh fruit, cereal, breads, a good toaster and fresh squeezed orange. Scrambled eggs every morning. Good coffee machine.
No tea or coffee making facilities in room so take a travel kettle and staff are happy to supply cups and saucers, tea spoons etc. Mini bar in room, ours wasn't stocked, but we soon sorted that! Fridge is a real bonus.
To sum up, I liked the Drago, one of the best views on the lake and secure underground parking. Lake Garda is lovely, do give it a try. Save a bunch and do it yourself though. Ignore SatNav it'll take you over the mountain from Verona airport, stick to the Garda road from Affi.

We recently stayed at the Hotel Drago...

Oct 2007, Dr M BRown

We recently stayed at the Hotel Drago for 1 week and all I can say it was not a good experience at all. From the time we arrived the attitude of the staff was poor. We did not enjoy ourselves at all and we would never stay at this hotel again!
The staff referred us as to Americanos and spoke under their breaths in Italian. They made no gesture to try to speak to us in our native tongue or try to understand what we were trying to say. Our room was terrible over looking the backyard and kitchen area. The only thing that saved us was the view of the high mountains. The food was so-so and the waiting staff made a comment that the Americanos don’t know how to eat right - whatever that meant.
The road out front was noisy with traffic that went speeding by. Obviously they don’t have speed limits in Italy! You were taking your life in your hands if you dared to take a walk-never mind to try and cross the street to the lake front. The shower in the bathroom was so small it was unbelievable!!! There was absolutely no hospitality at all on their part or should I say there would have been if we were German. The Hotel tends to be hospitable to this nationality. What did the Americans do to them that makes them so rude to us?
This hotel is a disaster and how anyone could give them a great review is beyond us. May be we are spoiled with the wonderful hotels in the great USA. It was nice getting back home where the people were friendly and thoughtful.

Positives: Clean, staff mainly friendly, nice setting, good food on a buffet basis.
Negatives: Not worth paying extra for lake view as the balconies are mainly in shade during day and there is a busy road in front of the hotel. If you do opt for one, ask not to be above the bar as that is noisier.
Just come back - it was extremely hot, even for this time of year and no air conditioning on in dining room or bar area. Also, not all the rooms have air conditioning so you should specify if you want that - but note that it costs 4 Euros per person per day (can't find that written down anywhere but that is what they charge).
There is a dress code of long trousers for men at evening meal - a bit hot in dining room, as there is of course no air conditioning. That is only written down beneath menu, as far as I could see. My husband was humiliated in front of everyone by two waiters when he entered the restaurant in shorts on the first night.
Three miles out of Malcesine and buses only run once an hour and stop at 7 pm. Buses not usually on time - could be up to fifteen minutes early or late. Buses often crammed full so even if you are there on time you might not get on. Ferry leaves from near hotel and is much more pleasant but again only one a day locally in either direction.
