Disappointed in the Mediterranee
from PHX3625
We're just back from a 2 week stay at the Mediterranee, and though we enjoyed our holiday, we wouldn't go back. We found the hotel to be 'ok', and that's really the best we could say about it. On our first nights stay, our air conditioning was broken (in temps of 40 degrees+) The staff were very nice about switching our room, to, however, the ONLY other room they had free. If you're reading the list of reviews from summer of 2007, then I'd say we were in the old/ dark ground floor room that the Merseys wrote about. Over all the hotel was clean and the staff nice and helpful. The breakfast 'buffet' wasn't up to much and the Panorama brochure clearly overstated the facilities at the hotel. Internet corner?? Never found it. Gym?? Never found that either. Beauty salon? Nope! and as for the small library, well that consisted of a dozen or so books and magazines that were left behind by other guests. If you like a nice pool area, (and we do) then be prepared to be disappointed. It was small and VERY cramped, and, entirely in the shade. For us a major disappointment was on the final day of our holiday. We had 7 hours to kill between checking out of our room and leaving for the airport. Understandably the hotel were fully booked and couldn't extend the checkout time of our room, but they did not have a shower facility or a room that guests could avail of to freshen up after a day in 40degree temps. We ended up checking into the Hotel Jupiter next door for 8 hrs at a cost (we were happy to pay) of 50eur. In 20 something yrs of travelling, this was a first.
Be Careful...Do Not Trust The Brochure!

We have just returned from the Mediterranee and regret even considering the hotel. Before leaving we had read very mixed reviews and were confused how some people found the hotel excellent and some horrible, however after visiting the hotel it is all very clear! There are two parts to the hotel, a large new modern complex of rooms at the back of the hotel, which, as the Thomas Cook brochure states, have very modern and luxurious installations. However there are also several smaller blocks of much older rooms which are horrible. These rooms are dark and depressing, the plaster is falling off of the walls, there is a strong smell of damp, the wet room is full of mould and the bathroom suite and tiles are very dated. The beds are very uncomfortable and have all sort of dirt in the corners which has clearly been there for years. The rooms are also very unsafe, especially if you are on the bottom floor. There are no balcony railings and the balcony doors lock with a simple latch which can be opened from the outside with a pen. Although Thomas Cook show picture of the new complex in their brochure, I would say that only around 2% of their guests are actually allocated rooms here. The majority of the guests in new complex are travelling with Dutch, Serbian and Scandinavian travel agents. The pool area of the hotel is also not very nice. The tiles are falling off and the gardens surrounding the pool are in desperate need off attention. The pool itself is reasonably clean, however very deep, with the shallow end being 1.3 metres. The steps in and out of the pool are very dangerous as they have very sharp edges where many people hurt themselves. Also, on several occasions during our two week stay, the hotel ran out of hot water, and we all had to have cold showers before going out at night. The air conditioning in the rooms is also prone to breaking down. The small children’s playground is also in need of an upgrade, as the equipment is very rusty and quite dangerous; however the concrete tennis court is good enough for a fun game of tennis. The breakfast in the hotel is Continental style and is nothing special, however the hotels taverna next door is excellent, and all of the snacks that you order from the pool bar come from here, which is about the only good thing at the hotel. Overall I would not recommend this hotel to anybody, even if can get a room in the new complex. Even if you have a tight budget, there are much better hotels in Tsilivi at much cheaper rates.
Fantastic Holiday

We have recently just got back from a week stay at the Mediterranee Hotel in the resort of Tsilivi, Zakynthos. We had an absolutely brilliant time. After reading some of the reviews on this website I was nervous the hotel would not be as nice as it looked when we booked, but we were very impressed upon arriving. The room was clean, spacious and we had a balcony overlooking the gardens and pool. The decor was simple (as most places in Greece are) but nice. The pool has plenty of loungers and is a reasonable size (although it is very deep and wouldnt be suitbable for really small children unless supervised) The staff were very helpful and friendly; our transfer didnt collect us from the hotel until 3.30am and we had to check out midday before - the staff let us use a room for 1 hour at 7pm to change/shower and get ready for the night time and gave us a place to store our luggage. The food and drink it very reasonable and we even came back with about 200Euros (and we drank a lot of cocktails during our stay) You also get a 10% discount from the Med Grill the hotel restaurant. We ate there one night and it was the best meal I had all holiday! Tsilivi had a heatwave during the week we were there and it was in the 40's every day. The hotel has free air conditioning which is a MUST! There are plenty of excursions you can do from Tsilivi and we went on a boat trip around the island and we also went Parasailing, both of which were reasonable and really good fun. There are so many restaurants and bars to choose from - even a McDonalds (which we did not use!!) My advise is to explore and find some of the quieter Greek restaurants and tavernas as there are some excellent ones out there!!
no problems at all - great time

We stayed at the Mediterrannee for just the one week in Sept 2005 and would have loved to have stayed longer. The grounds are beautiful with fig trees, wild vines and lovely Purple blooming trees. Yes, the rooms are furnished quite spartanly and you do get the odd cracked tile- not bad considering the traffic these rooms get over a summer or two so you should expect this really! If you don't like the odd cracked tile or scratch on the wall - go 4 star and pay a whole lot more! The rooms were however cleaned at least 4 times a week with towels changed each time. Bed sheets I would estimate about 2 times per week but with that lush air conditioning (FREE I may add!) you are hardly in a bath of sweat the whole night beleive me - I had some of the best nights of sleep encountered on a foreign holiday in these rooms. You also have black out louvre shutters, curtains and patio doors to help you sleep soundly. The maids are lovely always helpful if you need the extra odd towel etc. The staff at the reception and in the bar are outstanding and always courteous. Be polite and have a stab at the language you may find a more friendly response. The pool isn't the biggest on the island and it can get a little cramped sometimes but you don't have to be a genius to see this from the brochure or pics on the web. The beach is about 10 minutes down the road past some wonderful bars and restaurants so take a stroll if its a bit packed - it doesn't stay like this as most people do the same.. I have to recommend the restaurant Med Bar just outside - the food is excellent, the price is reasonable plus you get 10% off and have probably the best gyro's and souvlaki on the island - perfect for a midday bar snack - you have to try them. The breakfasts are basic - continental bread, croissants etc with jams, marmalades sliced ham, boiled eggs, cereals, tea, coffee, juices etc. but they do have the lovely fresh and thick greek yoghurt with honey which is worth it. If its not to your tastes - there are plenty of bars further down serving Britsih fry ups. the Red Lion is good - so is the bar across the road. Try the cocktails in The Two Brothers Bar - A1 The only real pain was the price for the safety deposit so budget a little extra and be safe. All in all you get what you pay for here plus some lovely staff, great food on your door step, Tv - Sky News, Sports etc in the room, with air con worth its weight in gold all for a reasonable price. Plus an overall great resort - far better tha Lagana for grown ups, little 'uns and the youngsters a like.
Horrible!

We booked this hotel from a Travel Agent's website and were so disappointed - the rooms were horrible and really dingy and in desperate need of a refurb - the pool was really small and there were not many sunloungers. It was also quite a walk from the beach and just not what we were hoping for. The weather didn;t help - violent storms several days - and there is nothing to do at the hotel in that case - although several of the local bars showed current cinema releases free of charge, so I would recommned that. All that being said, you get what you pay for and I think this is quite a cheap hotel. Zanthe airport is a joke - we had to queue outside in the blazing sunshine for three hours at which point the check in staff gave our passports to someone else! They would not do anything about getting them back, so we had to run after people and see if they had our passports by mistake - totally unsatisfactory.
Enjoyed every Second!!

Staff were great very friendly. We always managed to get a space by the pool even though it was high season. Air conditioning was free which is a must this time of year. Hotel is in a good position for the beach which is about 500yds straight down the road in front of the hotel. Car hire and supermarkets about 30 seconds away. It’s away from the main centre of tsilivi which is only a short walk down the road plenty of bars and restaurants close at hand. We tried a number of different eating venues but spent most of the time at the med grill as the meals were excellent and well priced also if you are staying at the hotel you get a 10% discount card on all meals which if there are a few of you can work out to be quite a lot. You only have to look for the Restaurants which are continually full to see which are the best ones and this one was. Pool bar is brilliant it’s open as long as you can stay up. Trying to go back there again next year.
Okay hotel but not the best

Rooms clean if a little dingy. Staff very friendly and helpful. we stayed bed and breakfast and i thought that the breakfasts were poor, fruit, ham, cheese and boiled eggs with not so fresh bread every day can get a bit boring. never went to the pool once because it was so busy but we did go during school holidays. location is great not too busy and close enough to the beach. restaurant on front of hotel ok for lunches but not that good value for evening meals. Overall if you get a cheap enough deal and don't expect a 5 star hotel itsnot too bad a place to stay.
Great location

Clan towels and bed linen twice a week. Pool ares not too crowded close to all amenities but away from the late night noise (our room was on the second floor in a block about 50 metres from reception). Tsilivi itself - bit pricey for food but you get plenty, good friendly bars - Two brothers and utopia to name but two the beach is ok for sun bathing and swimming and watersports.Allday trip round the island is a good idea (maybe you'll see the turtles maybe you won't). Big minus for the airport departures - too small and the toilets were disgusting

Firstly contrary to other reviews they are swallows not pigeons ! . How this hotel has been rated so high is beyond belief, On arriving the first thing we did was ring the tour operator. Our room was dirty , the furniture looked as though it was made in the sixties and was very dark and dismall. We booked this holiday on the internet and has to be the only one we have been disappointed with. One day my son spilt something on his bedsheet so my wife left his sheet in the bath,on returning to the room later we found that the maids couldnt even bother to make the bed but just left the clean sheet folded up on the bottom of the bed , as we felt the hotel was not exactely the cleanest we thought we'd play a little game we left some toothpicks on the stairs from reception to the rooms, thes remained on the stairs from Monday to Sunday which is when we left,it would be rather interesting to know if they are still there now !. If you want a fridge then you have to pay at reception, this will set you back a staggering six euros a day and safety deposit boxes are a further fifteen euros a week !. Overall i have to say this is a very over rated hotel which needs a good clean and a modernising plan .VERY DISSAPOINTING
Fantastic holiday

My partner and I had our first holiday together in Zante (Zakynthos) back in 2003. As we arrived at the Mediterranee Hotel our first impressions couldn't have been better. Location wise, it was close enough to all ammenities and bars / restaurants. Yet not too close so that it was noisy and buzzing. The hotel itself looked fantastic as the sun shone on it's entrance. The room which was situated in the main building was spotlessly clean and welcoming. This continued throughout our 7 night stay. The receptionists, maids, and bar staff couldn't have been more helpful. The pool always had room to sunbathe and had sun beds available. There were people present but not too many for the size of the resort. Unfortunately I suffered with a bug which was circulating around the island. Even this didn't get me down. Although I was abroad I did not worry at all, as the English speaking Doctor was fantastic. Along with the Pharmacy staff themselves who also aided in my recovery. The resort itself and all of the local people really were brilliant, and so friendly. I would visit again tomorrow and would advise others to also. Enjoy!
My husband and I went to the Mediterranee Hotel at the begining of June 2011, we had a great time the people in the hotel are very friendly. The location is fantastic its on the main strip and just opposite the hotel there's a road the leads down to the beach about 200 maybe... more
