Cotswold Lodge Classic Hotel Reviews

3 / 10
Sep 2006, Mrs A Green

From the outside this hotel is perfect, once in the room (59) everything was dreadful. Dirty bath, broken toilet seat, cupboard drawers hanging off, grey net curtains, coffee stained wall paper, dusty, smelly and definitely no where near 4* standard. Staffs attitude... more

Not 4 star
The warm welcome I received from the manager on arrival was the only positive thing about our stay. The decor of this place (which is allegedly recently refurbished) is very tired - shabby but definitely not chic. Our room was very disappointing - no toiletries, just one chair and a great view of the car park. Breakfast was a nightmare on the second morning as the staff could clearly not cope with the wedding party from the previous night. Coffee arrived lukewarm and stewed and when I sent it back, asking for a freshly made pot, I was sharply informed that all the coffee was freshly made. After this, I decided not to bother sending the half raw sausage back and just left it. At check out the receptionist was rude and argumentative, with no thought of asking if we'd enjoyed our stay. This is definitely not value for money and I would advise anyone planning a weekend in Oxford to stay elsewhere.
Very Nice Hotel
Stayed at this Hotel over the Bank Holiday weekend. It was of a very good satndard i thoguht. The decoration was obviously pretty new, and everything was very clean, espacially the bathroom which was super super clean. I know other people have complained about thin walls, this is was true maybe to a certain extent occasionally but it certainly didn' t bother us during our stay. We live in London so noise of somekind is just a part of life. staff very helpful. Loads of free parking - in Oxford that counts for a lot as there is no where to park. The city centre is a pleasant 10 minute stroll away. Take advantage of Happy hour 6-8pm at the bar where the cocktails are rediculously cheap!
Service awful!
Our room was small and smelly. The food was good. But then I discovered that my purse with passport was gone. When I asked for assistance in sending an emergency email, the staff advised me that they couldn't allow me to use thier computer. Not like she offered to send an email on my behalf - there was no one waiting. However she 'helpfully' advised me of how to get to an Internet cafe. It was 20 minutes walk away from town. And closed when I got there. Yeah. When I returned from my trek I asked if she would contact the bus company that we arrived with and ask if my bag had been turned in. She told me that it hadn't. Well, two stress-filled days and one missed international flight later I went to the company who indeed had my bag. If she didn't call, wouldn't it just have been easier to refuse my request. So I write this on a bus headed for Germany to get there as quickly as possible. Yes, 18 fun-filled hours to share my experience at Cotswold Lodge. It could be you.
Good hotel but disappointing bedrooms.
We stayed at the Cotswold Lodge at the beginning of December 2006. Location wise it was very easy to find by car with ample carparking (unusual for Oxford) and only a short walk into the town centre. The hotel provided everything we required for a girls Christmas Shopping spree. The communal areas were spick and span and decorated in a traditional "English Country" style. We found our twin room, which was on the ground floor in the modern part ot the hotel, very clean and comfortable. In fact I had one ot the best nights sleep I have ever had in a hotel. However, the room was very tired and small for the £165 we paid. The television worked but looked as though it was from the 1970s. All the staff were very helpful and we did enjoy our stay as it met all our requirements, we were just disappointed that the quality of the room did not really the price that we had paid.
Wasted Potential
We booked the hotel on the recommendation of friends who had stayed there in the past. It appears that we have different standards. Location wise the hotel is good. 10-15 minutes walk from the centre of town. The hotel was easy to find from their directions and first impressions were good. Public areas are very nice. Plenty of seating inside & outside. Decor is tasteful & in good condition. Check in was quick and easy. Our room wasn't available (we arrived before lunch time) but we were able to leave our bags while we went into Oxford. The 2 receptionists were very friendly and arranged for an iron & ironing board to be in our room when we returned. So far so good, until we saw the bedrooms. The bedroom that we had was a standard doubles at £145 per night. The decor was poor and tatty and in desperate need of renovation. I was staggered that the hotel has the temerity to charge what they do for such poor rooms. I would have been disappointed with the room if it had cost half as much. I thought ours may have been a one off, but our friends rooms were exactly the same. The only saving grace was that the room was spotlessly clean, the bed was comfortable and the usual facilities expected from this standard of hotel were all there. Breakfast in the morning was good with friendly and quick service and a good quality buffet available. Overall the hotel is well appointed in the public areas and the staff are very friendly. It's standard rooms are the only thing that let it down, but at the price they charge, this is quite a failing.
Disappointing STAY
Having spent one noght at the Cotswold Lodge Hotel celebrating my best friends birthday I was filled with great disappointment and very relieved that I had only booked the one night. The staff are the hotels biggest let down. Receptionist rude on arrival and far from welcoming. We had to search for bar staff at 11pm to be then told it was not possible to have a hot chocolate as the machine was switched off. Coffee also posed a problem but did eventually arrive. Breakfast was equally disappointing nobody available to greet us and show us to a table. Food luke warm, no marmalade sorry we have run out! How is this possible when you a running a hotel and serving breakfast everyday? Very poor service for a for star hotel or should I say lack of service.
Highly Recommended
Hotel corridors and rooms beautifully redecorated and immaculate. Public rooms comfortable and tasteful. No lift, but easy to climb the short staircase. Staff warm, courteous, and helpful. Located in a residential area of large homes, a short taxi or bus ride from the center of Oxford. Clientele both English and international, including young couples, business travelers, families, and small groups. Reasonable rate (65 pounds/night, including a good full breakfast). Nice menu for dinner, but multi-purpose room doesn't "feel" like a restaurant. (On the second night, I had a superb dinner just across the road at Gee's Restaurant-- upscale contemporary menu, very popular.) A friend of mine was given a much larger room, one of 12 fireplace suites named for Oxford Colleges--worth asking for if you have a "run of the house" reservation.
Mixed Bag
I recently spent a night at this hotel. I found the receptionist to be off-hand and only helpful under pressure. Although, the public areas were attractively decorated the hallway to my room was grubby and featured a lot of cobwebs. The room was in need of a make over and was bare of any information on Oxford or the hotel. There is no lift in the hotel. Room service was efficient and the food was good. The walls are thin....I could hear the person next door testing the electrics! The hotel is a good walk from Oxford and would be ghastly in poor weather. I would not stay here again.
Classic indeed!
My wife and I had a provisional booking at a better known Hotel in Oxford. I was getting directions as the departure grew nearer and was disapointed by some of the reviews i read, so much so that i investigated and easily found the Cotswold Lodge and Booked here instead. This is not a modern hotel, how refreshing! Tis a classic British one! The restaurant is way above average, quality is outstanding, rooms are spacious and cosy. Bring a book or games and watch out for the speed camera on Banbury road, thirty miles an hour limit,(i was caught @ 36 ouch!) The hotel would benifit to get one of their open fires up and running. Staff are exellend and most accomadating!
