I visited Oporto in December 2007 during the run up to christmas. The city was in full christmas mode with europes tallest 'christmas tree' in the main square outside the city hall. The tree in fact being a giant scaffold of mesh and lights that looked spectacular at night.... more

Ideal for a visit to Porto
We spent 4 nights in the Vila Gale and were very impressed with the room, staff, breakfast and bar. The area around the hotel is run down but the Metro and a taxi rank are only 2-3 minutes walk away. The Metro even has instructions for tickets and some announcements in English. You can walk to the main tourist area in under 30 minutes. The local restaurant mentioned in other posts is a bargain. Two courses each, a bottle of wine and a bottle of water for under 25 Euros. The cafe just past the taxi rank is also very friendly and even cheaper. Must dos in Porto are of course the Port cellars, boat trip and the open topped tourist bus. Overall a very enjoyable trip.
Love the hotel
Nice room with excellent breakfast. Every day cleaning the room. I suggest to everyone. The walking street is near, and the river is so close to the hotel (1-2 km.) Vivien, Hungary
vila gale in july
we stayed at the vila gale in early july.it is a typical international 4star but with lower prices for everything.reception staff are not as warm as they might be.as previous reviewers state the restaurant triunfante accross the street is very good and real value for money.between taxi rank and metro is cafe pinguim where manuel is a legend at giving tourists the best information on all locations of interest.the beer and snacks are good and very cheap~8 euros for 2 bottles of beer half bottle of good wine and 2 toasted ham and cheese sandwiches~unbeatable? we loved all of porto and we had a great time.public transport is excellent and cheap buy a 5 euro ticket in stcp shop located between triunfante and pinguim opposite vila gale hotel and travel all day on metro ~bus ~train ~trams ~funicular everywhere.
Average
Stayed for 2 nights in June. The rooms was a good size, with a good sized clean bathroom. AC was quiet and did the job. This hotel is located in an area that appeared to be a bit grotty, and requires taxis to and from town. We had an evening buffet, it was the worst meal of the holiday. Would not stay there again.
Loved the breakfasts!
Superb choice. Facilities very good. Did not have time to use the pool or spa but it was nice that they were available. Very nice restaurant opposite called Triunfente - or something very close- where the meals were excellent, large and cheap. We also found the Metro was about 100 yards away as was the taxi rank. Between the the taxi rank and the Metro was a little cafe/bar, named Pinguim, where English is spoken and whose owner was extremely helpful - far above the call of duty. His lager and coffee were excellent and again very cheap and he was very accomodating for the vegetarian in our party. Porto is very charming as are the people and we would all like to return. Would recomend you visit. Be prepared for climbing the hills!
loved the port
This hotel is great value for money. Immaculate reception - couldn't fault the rooms/ restaurant/ or Blues and Soul bar.The spa and pool overlooks the city -great views and at 7e extra well worth a visit. The hotel is a bit out of town but taxis are so cheap. The restaurant opposite the hotel is great value we had a 3 course meal for four people including 2 bottles of Mateus Rose for 47e! We also found a little cafe opposite the Port houses it was above the main row of restaurants by the river. We had lunch there twice -soup and sandwich for 3 e and on another day Whiting, chips and salad plus chocolate cake and coffee for 7e. A great city to visit over 3/4 days
Great city, great hotel
We had a 2 night break in Porto and stayed at Vila Gale and were really happy with the hotel. As we were driving, it was important to have secure parking - which the Vila Gale had (underground car park), also the Vila Gale web site had good directions to the hotel. The hotel is an about 20-30 mins walk from the river front of Porto (but this walk is all down hill). The reception staff are very friendly and will give you a map and recommend places you should see / visit. We would get a taxi back to the hotel - which were reasonable price (about 4 euros). The rooms were great - clean, good size and modern. We had breakfast included, which was a good buffet breakfast with lots of selection (including cooked breakfast). We had a great stay in Porto and loved the hotel. Would definately stay there again, especially if driving.
I would never come back
This hotel ist at most a 2 -3 star hotel and is located in an old shopping center with a lot of closed shops. The rooms are very functional and the air condition is in summer too weak to cool down. Everything seems to be much used an old. So do not expekt a modern bathroom. It is a little bit annoying that you have to pay for everything in this hotel like save, swimming pool, etc. The breakfast is okay but not comparable with breakfasts from the big 4-star chains like Holiday Inn, Renaissance, ... I would highly recommend not to stay longer than one night.
budget prices for 4 star stay
We were delighted when we stayed at this hotel which was close to the metro (two stops from the train station) allowing us to take trips around the area - we recommend visiting Braga. Hotel 15 mins easy walk from the centre. The Staff were friendly and efficient and all English speaking. The buffet breakfast included in the price was the best breakfast I have ever had with a healthy option with so much fresh fruit. The evening buffet at 12 euro's again was good value although as each day there was a speciality of the day this also appeared as a stewed version in the hot buffet. The rooms are large and very clean, and as we were on the 11th Floor (no smoking)gave us a good view of the city.Took the cheap local bus form the airport to the centre, and the hotel booked us on the airport bus back-unfortunetly this didn't arrive but there is a taxi rank outside the hotel.
4 star hotel for 2 star prices - mega bargain ! great hotel !
Stayed at this hotel for 2 nights - absolute bargain ! This is a great hotel. It cost 66 pounds per night for 3 of us - 22 pounds each - the room was really spacious considering we had an extra bed. spotlessly clean and very comfortable - bathroom was clean, again very spacious - maid service excellent - mini bar prices where a joke compared to most 4 star hotels that i have stayed in - mega cheap. Breakfast was incredible and was included in the room price - honestly gorgeus. one of the best breakfasts i have ever had. We took advantage of the buffet menu in the resteraubt in the evening - all you can eat for 12 euros a head - fresh prawns, mussels, cheeses, salads, best fish - meat - pasta, soups, fresh breads, vegatarian options, desserts to die for - i am still in shock - porto has to be one of the cheapest citys in the world ..... Hotel has live music on every night - jazz band was top notch - bar bill for the evening was 18.50 euros ! 2 large beers, 1 small beer, 2 rose wines, a water and a pina colada cocktail!!!! plus the hotel put on a free wine and port tasting hour. Staff where very helpfull and very friendly - i would reccomend this hotel to anyone - if you have walking problems then use a taxi to get in and out of town as the roads in oporto are very steep. we walked from the hotel to ribiera and got lost - but it was an amazing experience - we wandered into an area hardly ever visited by tourists - the locals put us back on the right track but the walk through those ancient streets was incredible even if you did feel you where going to fall out the sky because you where so far up in the air! a portugese pensioner walked past us hardly puffin and we where near to collapse - what an amazing place and so friendly. The Hotel has a fantastic view from the gym and swimming pool on the 19th floor. Only 7.50 euros for a day pass to use all the facilitys - ie sauna etc my daughter and i spent hours in there plus you can get a spa package for 30 euros! To be honest oporto has everything going for it - historic buildings, great food, great port < the dry amazing ! amazing river side, good nightlife, nice people, really good shopping - the prices are simply mega, mega cheap - we just went to a very modern cafe - had two pots of fresh english tea, two scones - hot with jam and butter, 1 coke and an icecream 5.80 euros ! and that wasnt in a greasy joes but a very trendy cafe. i am booking another flight as soon as i get home. we are off to another hotel on the other side of the city to sample the heritage area and what it has to offer - i love oporto and the vila gale was brilliant.
