Nice venue but could try harder
I visited this hotel twice in June/July to attend conferences and left disappointed both times. The location is beautiful and the old buildings are really nice, initial impressions are good and I was looking forward to my stay. My room for my first stay was a little small and had a problem with the shower and TV; despite requesting help at reception none was forthcoming. On my return visit the room had not been serviced properly after the last guest had left and I had to remove rubbish and the previous day's newspaper from my... more
Fantastic Murder Mystery
Booked a birthday murder mystery weekend away with my best friend to this hotel. To be honest, a bit apprehensive looking at the past reviews, but we were pleasantly surprised. The hotel has undergone refurbishment and all public areas were clean and the staff were very polite and friendly. Our rooms were large, clean and the beds were lovely and soft. Only a mini bar missing really. The weekend was really entertaining and the breakfast and evening meals were delicious, with what I thought a good choice of menu. The pool and gym are... more
Massively Overrated
Four Stars, what a joke!!! This hotel misses the mark significantly! The service is below standard, when I checked in the reception asked me whether I wanted to book a table in the restaurant. I did, when I arrived at the restaurant at the booked time they had no details of my booking. The service was slow, the selection limited and the quality of the food is at best mediocre. The room sizes are adequate, but the beds are lumpy and plan to get a restless nights sleep as you can hear doors banging and people talking throughout the... more
Enjoyed my stay
I attended a conference held at the Thames Four Pillars, and after reading the other reviews was not looking forward to it. However, there was nothing wrong with the hotel. It does have charm, if a little manufactured. My room was spotless, and serviced everyday. The layout of the hotel is very spread out, there is a fantastic small pool, and a gym. The staff were very friendly and helpful, and the restaurant food was great. During my stay the hotel was undergoing refurbishment, this did not in any way interfere with my stay. The... more
Terrible!
This hotel is awful! gaudy, old fashioned and gruby....certainly not a 4*. I would NOT recommend this hotel for any occasion. Service is poor, food awful......We will never return.
Four Pillars? More like Faulty Towers
The Four Pillars Oxford is abismal! It's too far out of Oxford to call it's self an Oxford hotel. Don't believe the brochure or the websites photo's or description of either it's rooms or it's location The menu has no imagination at all, and most of what is on it is poorly presented or simply unavailable. The bar is just an extension of the reception area., complete with gaudy threadbare carpets and biege everywhere. The staff make the simplest of tasks feel like it would challenge the members of Mensa and the beds are less comfortable than... more
Beware the beds!
Conveniently located just outside Oxford (only £6 - £8 taxi ride depending on time of travel). Beautiful setting on the banks of the Thames. Best feature is definately the swimming pool. However, not somewhere I'd recommend for a good nights sleep! Our mattress was truly ancient with lumpiness and sloping to the centre to prove it. Our friends had to sleep on a pull down bed (think camper / sofa bed here) despite paying a premium rate for an executive room! We were however offered a discounted rate after taking the manager... more
Take a sleeping bag!
Do not book this hotel over the Internet! We did and were called an hour before we were due to arrive to say that they had encountered an error with the online booking system and consequently 5 rooms had been double booked. Disappointing and inconvenient.
Lovely, but unfortunate!
This hotel is beautiful! The staff are fantastically friendly. Our room seemed to be at the furthest away point from the reception area, but it was well worth the walk. The room was large, beautifully decorated, with a king size bed, well equipped bathroom and seperate lounge area with big comfy sofa. To top it all it had a huge balcony running the entire length of the room with a stunning outlook over the immaculate manicured gardens and the Thames beyond. The swimming pool was fantastic, very grand looking, but quite busy, I got the... more
