Very Distressing experience - BEWARE

Well where to start really, I would not recommend this hotel for any purpose which is unfortunate because the reception, bar and restaurant areas were all lovely however the room we were given had been smoked in previous to our arrival and on informing reception they sent someone to spray air freshener, since departing and complaining apparently we were offered a change of room but this did not happen.
The main reason however that I would be cautious of this hotel is that if by some chance you leave an item behind in your room after departure and you notice and contact the hotel you will not be taken seriously or recieve promised phonecalls or action or the item back. I left my purse behind after visiting and as soon as i noticed i contacted the hotel to spend the next 2 hours having to chase them up. Only to be told that I cant have left it there because it hasnt been found. After contacting head office I am also clearly in the wrong with them to expect that the staff at the hotel could be trusted to find items and hand them in and for management to treat the complaint and underlying issue with respect and severity.

The Oxford Hotel is in a super...

Jan 2006, Mrs P Owen

The Oxford Hotel is in a super location for an easy scenic walk by the river into Oxford. We would book again if the hotel had lived up to expectations.
Reading of the multi million pound refurbishment we did not expect to dine in a restaurant that resembled those in city stores. The breakfast was a similar standard too, though store prices are a better bargain.
In order to reach our room we had to trail down a long corridor that must be set aside for smokers as the smell of stale smoke seemed to ooze out the walls, up a set of stairs onto a cold landing then down two more corridors. We had sympathy for the old gentleman who, flustered, was heard saying, "I keep losing my room."
Our room was hot and quite basic. Refreshments were at the minimum - bring your own tea and milk unless you are happy to ask for more.
The pool is small. It was impossible to swim when we visited because other guests stayed in a group at one end to chat or jump off each other shoulders despite the "No diving" signs. The two saunas can only accommodate two or three people at a time, lean forward and your head will touch the door.
We are pleased that we didn't stay at the Oxford Hotel before its multi million pound refurbishment.
