Muses Hotel.Koukounaries

Stayed there this June. Really,it seems as if they have just removed the 'cooking range' from self catering apartments and called it a hotel. In our room, you had you feet on the shower base whilst using the toilet. The rooms were kept clean, and fresh towels daily, the breakfast was as good as other hotels, baked beans on,most days. Our friends showed us their room at the Panorama, and was much more in the classification of hotel.I think their fridge and A/C were included in the price, which,at the Muses put about another £80 on price. In short,I'd go again if I had to,with no concerns
Very disappointing

Wish I had read the negative comments that so many people have posted before we confirmed our booking! We were booked into Muses for a week's family holiday, but checked out after only one night. This hotel is extremely disappointing and the staff are very rude and unfriendly. It is badly run-down too and my advice would be to rather stay at another hotel close by.
GOOD BASE FOR STUNNING BEACHES
from PhilippaM
We just returned from a week at the Muses Hotel in Koukounaries and had a great time in Skiathos overall. I quite agree with some of the other comments made regarding the lack of service and poor breakfast options BUT these are minor negatives in the scheme of things....especially when you consider you are minutes away from some of the most stunning beaches in the world (honestly!), and great restaurants (can highly recommend the Kolios Taverna) and are bang in the middle of a World Heritage area!!! If you can ignore the tedium of disinterested "NO" responses to simple requests and focus on the good stuff, all will be well. The property offers a lot of what you would expect - nice well equipt rooms (air-con and fridge 5 Euros per day each) with simple inoffensive decor and balconies (if overlooked), good grounds and public areas including pool area, restaurant etc. It's just the service that lets it down. Our impression is that it's more about the owner's strange preoccupation with petty / inconvenient rules, presumably servicing his bottom line. Regarding the breakfasts...they are pretty rough but you can go next door to the Hotel Panarama and, for a very reasonable price, pick up a great breakfast to set you up for the day. By the way, do hire a car if you want to discover some of the more heavenly smaller beaches and have a nose around the island. It's small, easy to get around and perfect for families and couples (gay and straight). Happily, it's free from the lager-louts and party yobs that hit other islands and is great for sun worshipers, nature lovers and those seeking a more mellow "Greek" holiday experience.
Muses Hotel August 2006

Travelled with First Choice. Hotel is clean, basic and located near to Koukounaries beaches (although a hike to get to Banana beaches!). Charges for fridges and air conditioning annoying. Pool clean and generally sunbeds available but little atmosphere. Breakfast dull and repetitive - peaches every day, hot dog sausage alternate days, boiled/scrambled eggs alternate days. Beds - even for Greece very uncomfortable. Reasonable number of tavernas nearby -recommend Ilias Orchard, Strofinia, Village: avoid Georges Taverna.
Must try harder

Stayed at the Muses end June/Early July 2006 for 2 weeks and whilst the Muses is ideally situated in Koukanaires on the terrific island of Skiathos the Hotel itself was disappointing .The rooms varied in type with the best being on the first floor. Those on the ground had smaller balconies many of which were overlooked. It is apparently possible to request a first floor room ahead of arrival and this is recommended. The pool was fine and the poolbar staff helpful and friendly but in general the facilities were basic and this was perhaps highlighted by the petty charges levied for fridges and aircon. Over the whole 2 week period the breakfasts alternated between boiled and scrambled eggs. I noticed a number of people eating out in order to relieve the monotony of this fare.In general the Hotel needs to try harder. It could be great but is at present only average.

My husband and I stayed here for a week in June, if you have booked here you have nothing to worry about. The hotel/apartments are of a good standard and immaculately clean. The pool and pool bar are nice and good for chilling out. The breakfast was ok, lovely bread and eggs along with hams, cheese, cereal, etc. Koukanaries is quite quiet at night and the restaurants are not up to much in my opinion, however Skiathos town has a much better nightlife and higher standard of restaurants. It is easy to get the bus along, the bus system on the island was superb. The main beach is only a couple of minutes away and there are also a few other beaches near by (beware of a few naked wanderers tho). Koukanaries has fantastic scenery and adventurous walks. If your planning a boat trip they are half the price down at the harbour compared to the reps prices. Contrary to reports we thankfully did not come across any snakes, although the later the season I believe there is a problem with wasps/bees.
Great hotel !

We have just got back from a wonderful stay at the Muses Hotel on the island of Skiathos. We heard so many good reviews on the hotel and we were not disappointed. Remember this is Greece and for Greek standards it was very good with basic facitilies in the room. We had a room with 3 beds, fridge (you pay 3 Euros a day for), shower over bath, balcony, beds are changed mid week and fresh towels are provided. Air conditioning is available on request - I think they just need to switch it on in your room. Rooms were cool anyway so we didn't need it. The maid service was very good. The hotel has a pool with a pool-side bar. We didn't use the pool as we preferred the beach. We went early season so the pool seemed quiet - not sure how busy it would get mid summer!! We used the pool bar on an evening - very pleasant and the staff were very friendly. One night we got free shots with just about every drink we ordered - it was nice hospitality but the headache the next day made us regret it!! We ate in the Taverna on our first night - food very good - traditional Greek - good to see they are not serving burgers and chips!! Actually I don't think I found any place that did - thank goodness!! We tried a different Taverna each night as we thought it would be a bit boring eating in the same place all the time. I don't think we had a bad meal. All facilities were excellent - highly recommended. A warm and friendly hotel in a superb location a short walk to Banana and Koukounaries Beaches. To get back to Skiathos town (really nice on an evening) we simply flagged taxi’s as the buses were over crowded and only one has air conditioning! Taxi to the town cost approx 11 euros. We’ll be back!!

Very disappointed in this Hotel, if you can call it that, more like bungalows. We stayed on a B&B basis, and the breakfasts were very disapointing, more geared up to the Germans than the English. The swimming pool itself was very nice, unfortunately there was a bar at the end (or should I say Music bar) which played club music from around 11 am till early hours of the morning. So if you were looking to relax by the pool during the day, this was a complete no no. The staff (apart from the bar) were very nice. But there was no billard room, only a swing and a see-saw. I did enjoy the island and the beaches were wonderful. But if I were to go again I would definately stay next door at the Panorama, which was a family run hotel, with air con, fridge included in your price!
You will never forget Mikey's bar

We stayed at the Muses in May. We managed to get a last minute deal and didn't know what to expect but we were really happy to find the accommodation was excellent - although it was a long way back to our temporary home at the top of the path some nights especially after Mikey's B52's!!! The staff were all extremely friendly, but still very professional and made all their guests feel very welcome indeed. I would recommend this hotel to anyone and, at some time in the future, we will return. The island is an absolute gem too!!
Didn't actually stay here, but...

We stayed at Angelos Studios in Koukounaries in June 04, just round the corner from the Muses, but ate at their restaurant several times and it was great. they have zillions of swallows nesting in the rafters of the roof so it's quite bizarre as you eat your stifado surrounded by tweeting. Diners are protected from bird poo by clever platforms under the nests! the Muses pool and pool bar were great, best atmosphere in Koukounaries and always the busiest bar in the evenings after everyone had eaten. As I say, didn't stay there but the accom was opposite us and looked pretty good, bungalows and apartments going up the hill with quite extensive gardens and some typically mediterranean 'risk and challenge' type play equipment!

Having stayed in several average quality rooms in Greece, we were pleased to find that the Muses hotel in Koukounaries is a definite cut above. The rooms are situated 5 to a block (9 blocks - one for each Muse) and we had the good fortune of getting a room with a huge... more
