This hotel was really very basic, on arrival we were given our room key but not any information about the arrangements for the evening meal (they were supposed to tell you what the menu was and you said what you wanted in advance, so when we turned up there was considerable... more

This place is very tatty. Unfortunately being a large chain doesn't mean high standards. The room was ok, but the place lacks any kind of atmosphere. Calling somewhere 'Holiday Inn' is very brave as this isn't somewhere I'd want to spend on holiday. In the restaurant the... more

solid choice
Stayed here on business. Easy to access by car. My room hade everything I needed and it all worked. Relatively recent partial refurbishment and pleasant clean looking decor. No lift, if this might be an issue for you. Small health centre with pool and gym equipment. I had a pleasant early morning swim and was on my own in the small pool. Good breakfast. Brilliant fruit salad, and choice of cooked items. Newspaper. Staff all friendly and helpful. The business room worked well for our needs.
Dated and Needs Attention
I have stayed at this hotel on numerous occasions since August 2000. The last time I stayed at this hotel prior to this visit was March 07. The hotel has recently had re-refurbishment including installation of air conditioning but it is still an old hotel and dated. The rooms would benefit from double glazing as the windows are single glazed in metal frames that do not shut correctly with no draft proofing. I had an Executive room on my stay in Oct 07, and the only thing I could see different between this room and a standard room was a typists chair? Its obvious that there are cut backs as you are given the bare minimum of tea and coffee with only two small tubs of that awful milk. The hotel will provide more but you have to ask. Also, as an intercontinental platinum priority club member I have had to ask this hotel on each stay to provide benefits that are associated with this level of membership (this hotel does not provide them unless you ask). I had an evening meal in the restaurant and the food was adequate. If staying at this hotel I would suggest taking the two minute walk to The Sun pub where the food is very good (and where the chips come from a peeled and chipped potato, not from a freezer). Breakfast was not to bad, however the bacon and the sausage at all Holiday Inns I have stayed in (including this one) always seem to be undercooked, and once again I have to ask for my bacon to be crisp, and the sausage cooked thoroughly.
Ok but could do better
Found the hotel easily and looked forward to booking into our superior room. Check in was straight forward and handled efficiently by the young man on duty. We arrived at the room which was perfectly pleasant and laughed at the one chocolate which had been placed on one of the 3 (?????) pillows and noticed a single mars bar had been placed next to the one bottle of complimentary water. Went for shower and realised that only one bathrobe had been left despite this being a double booking. We were too tired to care and went to bed. On leaving for a day out the following morning, we mentioned to the young female receptionist that we only had provisions for one person and she couldnt have seemed less interested if she tried. "I will speak to housekeeping " she muttered without making eye contact once and fixing her eyes on her pc monitor. It was like a scene from Little Britain. We returned from our day out for our second and final stay and soon realised that absolutely nothing had been done about the situation. Again too knackered to mention it, we fell into bed not really surprised by the lack of action by Miss Computer Says No. Check out next morning was again swift and efficient. My partner mentioned that although the room and stay had been fine, we were surprised that we had been treated as a single visitor - and again the guy at reception said "I will speak to Housekeeping!" ( they appear to like that line!) Not a lot of use speaking to them now... we are leaving lol. The hotel itself is fine... public areas are clean and modern. The restaurant looked very busy which is always a good sign although we didn't eat at the hotel at all. Nor were we there long enough to make use of the leisure facilities. Very few channels available in the room - not really good enough in this age of Freeview. A good hotel for touring the area especially if you can get a good deal. Just take your own Mars Bar if there are two of you and try to beat your partner to the single bathrobe!!!
Out Dated
The Holiday Inn at Swindon is pretty tired. The hotel is very dated, and can't have been modernised, other than the odd cosmetics for some time. i.e bed linens with throws to look up to date but matresses with springs that dig in you ! The hotel is an old Forte PostHouse, and the design is typical with very long corridors and a pre-fab feel. I'd avoid the Holiday Inn Swindon unless you have no other choice. Holiday Inn - please give this hotel a makeover !
Out of the way & expensive
This is an "old style" Holiday Inn with only 2 floors & long corridors ... some rooms are a couple of minutes walk away from the reception at least. The room itself was clean & tidy, with plenty of room for the double-bed and sofa as well as a table & chair. There was a colour TV in the room, and a trouser-press. The bathroom was quite small, you couldn't get into the shower without closing the door at least partially, and there was no extractor fan to keep the large mirror clear. The hotel is situated in the middle of nowhere basically, on a dual-carriageway next to a petrol station, although there no road noise inside the hotel. There is also a pool & gym, but I didn't use these facilities. Loads of spaces to park your car, free. My main concern about the hotel is the price you pay once you are booked-in... we are talking London prices here, except it's in Swindon. How about: £3.95 for a side portion of chips with a meal, or £11.50 for a bowl of chilli, £13.95 for breakfast, £6 for a small jacket potato, £4.95 for a gin & tonic ... I could go on! Just as well my company was paying! :-) I paid £87 per night for Bed & Breakfast which wasn't too bad. Beware to check your bill though, I had an extra £4.95 listed as "Night Porter" on my bill when checking-out , queried it & turns out that someone else had signed something to my room even though my name was totally different from the name who signed (they do ask your name before allowing you to sign for anything). Stay here if you have to (I was doing a training course in the hotel itself for 3 days) , but check alternatives especially if you're paying the bill yourself.
Old fashioned & depressing
I stayed here for 2 nights on business. Didn't start well when I got to my room door and the keycard hadn't been activated. Cue a long return walk with bags to the receptionist who just shrugged about it. I suspect this an old former Post House hotel - low-rise, long corridors and dark rooms. There was a missing lightbulb and a pair of screws on the bedroom wall where I guess a picture once hung. The breakfast was ok but I resented having to pay an extortionate £2.50 for a cup of tea in the lounge. The two HI Expresses in Swindon are far superior to this depressing place.
Where was the "Million Pound Spent"
Had to move rooms in the night due to a dripping noise coming from the next room,no fan in bathroom to take steam away, carpets through the hotel looking washed out.Expensive drinks and food.
In need of a facelift
Whilst the hotel is in a good location and has good facilities, it is now well overdue for a refurbishment. Poor ventalation in the rooms (no air con here) and worn out carpets do not give a good impression. This is a shame though as the staff are good and breakfast is worth every penny but it is getting tatty around the seams.
What an experience
I recently had to travel to Swindon on business and for the first time stayed at the Holiday Inn. I normally stay in another hotel in the area but I will always stay with Holiday Inn Swindon in future. They were by far more friendly than the other hotel and were genuinely concerned about my stay. What a change for an industry that normally just want to take your money. I have no hesitatin in recommending people stay there.
