Aug 2010, happy father of bride

We were fortunate to have our daughter's wedding here in August 2010. The hotel and staff provided us with the finest of service and assistance when required; efficient, friendly, prompt and courteous. The venue was excellent, a lovely buiding of character with a view... more

Very small rooms, some without baths and not been decorated since the early 1970s. Good food with lovely views from the restaurant but decor outdated throughout. Staff generally fiendly although restaurant staff very young and a bit slow and forgetful! Have stayed at... more

Not great but not the worst
I have stayed at this property on a previous occasion and I was hoping that this time it would have improved. On arrival I noticed that my check in card had the room number crossed out and an new room allocated. When I went to my room I noted that it was quite small. At this stage I was reminded why English Hotels are known to very average in terms of value for money, generally mean in proportions and that the facilities are often quite "tired". My first night was uncomfortable with lots of road noise and noise from the rooms... more
Crazy chef - be warned
This is my 2nd review of this hotel but I had to do it to update you on the bizarre food served and the free wireless internet service. On the food side I ate their twice because it was raining and couldn’t face a trip out. On day 1 I ordered steak and chips but the steak came with a lump of cold pate on the top which I thought was bizarre. This was beaten on day 2 when my king prawns wrapped in ham starter arrived. The prawns were shell on, which would have been OK but because of the ham I had to unwrap them to de-shell them. Crazy... more
A Victorian Seaside Hotel
My wife and stayed at the Walton Park for a Saturday night as part of a group booking for a birthday party. It's quite a good venue for a big party with large public rooms looking out over the Bristol Channel to Cardiff. There is a good sized car park. The reception staff were pleasant. Our room was of a good size. The bathroom was tired but OK. The party catering was fine and the hosts and guests were all happy with what was provided. Breakfast was OK but the service a little haphazard with inexperienced staff - I never did get my toast!... more
For the over 70's
We arrived on a lovely sunny evening. The location is fantastic facing the Welsh coast across the Severn Estuary. We were efficiently booked in by friendly staff. Our twin room on the top floor faced west and was overly warm as there is no aircon and the sun shines straight in, however there was a cooling breeze. The view from the room would have been good if the double glazed window hadn't had it's middle pane full of condensation. The room was quite large, reasonably clean and the bathroom overly clean with the smell of bleach... more
Full of character
I paid £65 per night to stay at this hotel on a business trip through hotel booking agent Calder Conferences. The hotel is a little tired and each room appears to be furnished differently from all the others. The staff were all friendly but the best part of the hotel was the superb home cooked, home prepared & delicous English food. Beef casserole, roast beef, winter pies were all excellent and a real change from the frozen anodyne stuff you get at most chain hotels. Special bonus was discovering real ale (Bass) in the residents bar.... more
Didn't see Basil Faulty but Manuel and Syril were there!!!
The first thing to say is that the clifftop location of the hotel is fantastic. On a good day i'm sure the views across to Wales are amazing. The second thing is don't be fooled by the well known hotel chain name above the door. The Walton Park is clearly hiding behind its Best Western name and hasn't felt the need for any refurbishment since the 1970's. The third is don't stay here!! We had a number of issues/incidents during our 1 night stay which I am pleased/disappointed to see that many were shared with other reviewers... more
Step back in time
On arrival the outside of the building looks grand and a Great Location on the cliff top. When we walked through the door, disapointment must have shown. I thought we had stepped back in time. Bad thick grubby artex walls, grubby worn carpets, all original features seem to have disapeared. The room was big with a great big windows giving a fab view over the water, but the decor is still back in the 1970's, very little furniture a tv that just about worked and tuned in and the tea and coffee making was purched on a plastic shelf on... more
Fab view, shame about the 1970's menu
I stayed in the hotel on business and was rather dissapointed. The staff were very helpful and extremely friendly, nothing was too much for the receptionist! The view from my room was fab, I could see across the estuary into Wales, very tranquil apart from the creaking floorboards in the corridor and in room above mine. The hotel restuarant overlooks the estuary and is light and airy, however when travelling on my own I tend to order room service as I feel uncomfortable eating on my own. Due to the "meat feast" of a menu I... more
It improved
We stayed here from June 15-18. We were attending a family wedding and this hotel is in a great position for visiting relatives. We would reccommend this hotel as a flying visit, but don't expect too much. Good Points: 1. It is in a good position for the view and also the town (and our relatives). 2. The room was basic, (but what one would expect of a 3* hotel) clean and spacious. 3. Most staff were friendly, asking how a wedding we attended went, at 1.30am. 4. The breakfast, although initially awful, improved for... more
Great clifftop location, great restaruant, great views.
Enjoyed a windy one night stay in February during a gale. With the waves crashing on the cliffs below our window. The hotel is situated on the clifftops directly on the Severn Estuary with fine sunset views of Wales over the Bristol Channel. It is a popular venue for wedding receptions, The room was clean, the staff friendly and the dinner and breakfast we had in the hotel's restaurant were very good indeed. There is a nice coastal walk past the fine Victorian pier which was re-opened in 1998, after 28 years closure. There didn't seem a... more
