Redcar Hotel revisited
Two years ago my wife and I spent the night of Christmas Day at the Redcar Hotel. It was terrible and about the worst Hotel we have ever stayed in. With some reluctance we booked in for Christmas 2005 inspite of our past experience because there was nowhere else open that was convenient. We were well received, the place was clean and warm, the water hot and the breakfast as good as could be expected at 9.55am. Our only complaint was that the mattress was rather old and uncomfortable although we slept well. We mentioned this to the... more
A lot less nice than home...
This may be one of the cheaper hotels in Bath, but thanks to the efficiency of basic chain hotels, we have come to expect cleanliness and functionality for a lot less than the £70 a night the Redcar charges. Although fitting our car into the car park was a bit of a challenge, at least it was free. The receptionist who greeted us was very helpful, although there was no one available to help carry bags upstairs. Our room was small and dingy, with no ceiling light, and the first thing I noticed was a thick layer of dust on top of... more
Pleasantly Surprised
I was due to visit Bath for the weekend for the Christmas market with my 73 year old mum. I can only say that I was VERY worried after reading the reviews on Trip Advisor. What did I find, a friendly welcome, a comfortable room, acceptable breakfast, great location. Staff were very friendly and did all they could to make our stay enjoyable. Yes, the car park is small but it is in some 4 and 5 start hotels. You get what you pay for and I felt it was good value for money.

A shocker quite frankly! Breakfast was awful - No shampoo/etc in the rooms - No alarm clock PARKING?!!!- Hopeless. - A car park to small to park a bicycle in! I was told I could not pay by cheque - apparently they only accept cards. At least some of the staff were cheerfull.
The Redcar is the Fawlty Towers of Bath!
Our stay at the Redcar hotel in September 2004 was an awful experience. We had no hot water for the first two days, and the breakfast was inedible. The "full English breakfast" consisted of cold sausages and anaemic bacon; the coffee was rancid and the tea ponged. The cutlery was filthy. Even the tinned peaches were off, and when we brought this up with the staff we were told it was because the fridge/freezer no longer worked. The only enjoyable thing about it was the "gallows" humour and conspiratorial glances shared with fellow... more
nice hotel
i went to bath this summer, aug 2005. the hotel is nice and the staff is nice as well. the manager is a chinese and she is lovely. this hotel is good, esp. to some chinese travellers.
Absolutely magnificent!"
This hotel is an excellent hotel. I didn't expect a four pose room as that cheaper price. Very good breakfast and good parking facilities, exactly where we needed to be close to our venue, within walking distance. Very pleasant and helful manager and staffs. I will return to Redcar next year.
A Disgusting Hotel
The staff were rude from the start, the whole placed smelled stale, the room was in poor decoration, the mattress 20 years old with springs protruding. Not an exaggeration - this was the worst hotel I have seen in the UK. We were there 10 minutes before re-booking elsewhere.
corridor carpets could be more comfortable
boy, does this hotel seem to have a bad reputation around here. either things have changed markedly at the redcar or there are some real hotel snobs who expect sandy lane-style extravagance wherever they go. it really wasn't that bad. sure, it's basic. the self-serve breakfast is an interesting experience, especially (like seemingly half of bath) as the breakfast room is underground. but otherwise, considering the location (our american reception girl was quick to remind us that "pulteney bridge is not far at all"), it's good value... more
It was absolutely fine!
It was absolutely fine! We came across these reviews after we'd already booked, and laughed ourselves into hysterics imagining the terrible time we had in store. We were almost disappointed to find it was a perfectly normal hotel. Staff were friendly on the phone and in person. The room was fine, bathroom was very new and clean. Nice and quiet, we had a jolly evening and a good night's sleep. Breakfast wasn't fantastic, but it was OK (sausage, bacon, eggs precooked at self-serve buffet - presentation not great but tasted fine).<br... more
