Excellent in all respects. Lovely room, good breakfast and helpful staff. Fantastic leisure facilities as well. Our room was on the 2nd floor and with no lifts so quite a long walk but other than that it was perfect.

Dream turned into nightmare
After passing this Hotel many times on the motorwayway and dreaming of staying there my Daughter booked us in last weekend as a 60th birthday treat, what a letdown! We found it without problems and it looked lovely. The letdown came with the meals. Starters fine but when it came to the main course both came together but just as my Husband was going to cut into his the plate was whisked from under his nose with a muttered explanation that he'd been given Lamb instead of Beef, which meant that I had to start eating mine whilst he waited for his to be replaced, my plate was then cleared as soon as I put my knife and fork down whilst he was still eating. To make matters worse, at Breakfast ther was very little of anything out and only one egg so my husband had only got half a plateful and the refills weren't brought out to the Buffet table until he had finished the bit he got. No-one asked us at Reception as we booked out if we'd enjoyed our stay. no wonder!!!
not bad for a shortr stay
My boyfriend & i stayed for just 1 night as we were visiting Cheddar Gorge & Wookey Hole. The hotel was very easy to fnd if you follow the directions given by the hotel, & ideally situated for Cheddar & Weston super Mare. Our room (no 8) was large with a huge bathroom (nice corner bath) both of which were very clean, & with nice fluffy white towels. The bathroom i think had been updated recently as it did seem to be quite new... The staff were friendly & we were shown to our room, which was in the old part of the building, we did see the annex building & were not impressed as it looked a bit run down & shabby. We had a lovely view over the country side but the M5 was running through the middle of it, but we didn't hear much traffic noise so that was fine. The pool looked very clean & inviting but sadly we didn't have the time to use it. We went into Weston on the evening of our stay & ate at Nick's bar (at the far end of the promenade) the food, staff & the whole atmosphere were all excellent. The menu at the hotel that evening also sounded very appetising & if we had been staying for longer we certainly would have eaten there. The breakfast at the hotel was nice set in a large dining area of the old building. All the usual things for breakfast - choice of cereals, toast & preserves, tea/coffee, choice of fruit juices, then good old cooked english breakfast which was a buffet style so you could just help yourself to whatever you fancied, although by the time we got down there breakfast was nearly over & the eggs that were left were a bit hard to say the least ! Another guest asked if they would cook some more for him, which they did. So all in all a pleasurable stay but i wouldn't want to stay any longer than a few nights.
Give it a miss
This was probably once a lovely hotel but not now! The entrance looks lovely in the picture shown but beware of those steps because this is just the beginning of an obstacle course. No sign of ramps. Unfortunately our room in the annex was difficult to access because of the many steps and stairs (not mentioned on web page) and we were on the 2nd floor with no lift. Our room was small and needed a good make over. There was an unpleasant musty smell throughout the annex, perhaps due to the scruffy carpets, the furniture was very dated and the beds were so old and creeky we could even hear our neighbours turning over in bed!! Although the bath and washbasin appeared to be new, the rest of the bathroom, including the shower which was useless, had obviously been missed in the refurbishment . Once we had checked into our room it was so unpleasant we couldn't wait to leave and we went off to Western-Super-Mare for the evening. The only good thing about our stay here was breakfast. I suggest independent travellers give this hotel a miss and leave it to the weekend parties and coach trips.
Average 3 star, will not be returning
I was quite concerned about our break away considering the reviews I had read but decided to reserve judgement until we had been. As mentioned before, the Hotel is not easy to find and not very well signposted. When we checked in we were not told where our room was & had to find it for ourselves. Our room was satisfactory though a little dark & gloomy. The staff in the restaurant at breakfast were also very unwelcoming & we were made to feel awkward when asking for things. The only staff that seemed at all friendly were the Housekeeping staff who greeted us without fail each morning! Some training in customer care required I think!. We will not be returning in the future.
OK it's not perfect but.....
Having booked to attend our motorcycle club's national dinner dance being held at the hotel, we were somewhat concerned when we read the others reviews. (No we are not all 'Hairy Bikers' and do appreciate good standards). OK so it's not perfect but the hotel does seem to be addressing the issues. The room that we were allocated (206 - in the annexe at the rear) was small but had been recently completely refurbished (as had most of the other rooms) and was warm. The meal served to our group (64 in total)was good quality and hot which is unusual when serving so many people at the same time. The hotel staff were friendly and helpful and whilst the breakfast was served on smallish plates you could return to the hot buffet as often as you liked. Didn't use the the pool etc so can't comment.
Small, cold rooms and small, cold staff
Okay, the staff aren't really small, but they are cold! We found them unfriendly and unhelpful from the outset. The hotel was obviously once a nice manor house, but it's been transformed into a horrible anonymous, badly run chain hotel with tiny rooms and a truly awful bar and restaurant that we were forced to eat in due to our late arrival but lived to regret. Just check into a Travel Tavern or somewhere instead. One more thing, the rooms were freezing cold. OK, it was Feb, but you'd have thought they'd have the heating on. One of my colleagues complained about this and was brought a fire, about which the employee said, "don't touch it, whatever you do don't touch it" due to it being so hot. She spent the rest of the night at the far side of her small bed afraid the bed covers would fall onto the fire and burn her alive! We won't be back...
Dont bother
faded charm of possibly a nice hotel 15 years ago weddings every weekend, room was terrible musty and cramped. pool was old and unkept. breakfast served on tea saucers, and when i asked for a coffee i was told to share the gentlemens on my table!!!! who i didnt even know terrible best avoided
Best avoided
The hotel has been badly extended to make a sad ugly building. The meals are best avoided - no wonder the French think British cooking awful - try Axbridge where there are several places for a good meal. The waitresses although friendly were rushed off their feet so food was delivered at pace giving a fast food rather than relaxed pleasant experience. Some basic training would help. The showers in the pool area are dangerous as the temperature of the water changes regularly and unpredicatably. The hotel has functions at weekend that go on to 1am - the nosie makes sleep unlikely This is a hotel making its money from coach parties and functions - best avoided by the independent traveller.
Difficult to find - average 3 star
Stayed one night here on some family business. Arrived after dark and a long drive - I would recommend arriving in daylight, as the hotel is very out of the way, not well signposted and hard to locate (when I got lost even the receptionist had difficulty directing me!). Room very large, but a bit run down really - definitely no more than just a 3 star. View would have been lovely apart from the M5 running right across it. Breakfast was cooked to order and very good indeed. Staff quite chatty. Didn't have any other meals and I did not use the leisure facilities, so can't comment on them. Got the impression that most of their business is functions such as weddings, I only saw 2 other couples whilst I was there.
what great leisure and staff
Stayed at weekend what fantastic gym and leisure facilities the pool was superb, hotel served wonderful dinner on Saturday night and the staff were brilliant really a 4star hotel not 3!! We will be back soon. SB
