The first room I was allocated was above the reception area - outside which smokers congregate. The window was open so the room was full of cigarette smoke that had drifted up. The lights in the main room did not work and there was no sheets on the bed or pillow cases on... more

Excellent stay agree with all said by previous reviewer. Good value with plenty of room, clean rooms nicely appointed.
Also quiet superb spot for getting around the area. Staff pleasant and helpful at a very busy time of year the standard was very high.

This is one of the better Travelodge’s I've stayed in. It's on the edge of town surrounded by retail parks and close to the M5. Some of the rooms are a lot larger than normal, in fact they're huge. It has the usual Travelodge furnishings etc, but it's all fairly new and... more

Cotton sheets.
I stayed at the travelodge for five nights in July. You pay for what you get and I think that this lodge offers good value for money.Ok, there are no tumblers for your toothbrush; no hairdryers or toileteries. There is tea, coffee, milk and sugar. There's a bottle opener too. The bed was very comfortable and had cotton sheets! The room was large, as was the shower room. The shower was hot and strong. The bonus for me was that although the hotel is a stone's throw from the M5, the noise at night is minimal due to excellent double glazing. There is someone at the reception desk 24/7 and CCTV. I felt safe there. Sainsburys is just across the way (2 minutes) and opens at 7 am most mornings. There is a B and Q too. The pub next door is a bit on the pricey side ( £1.50 for half a bitter seemed a bit steep for a Northern girl used to Boddies). I didn't eat there as the food was a tad 'designerish... towers of thick cut chips etc. You'll do better at Asda just down the road. In all a good place to stay.
Standard Travelodge - worth a stay
This is my second night at Travelodge Taunton and I'm happy with the hotel. We've stayed at many Travelodges throughout the UK and this one compares favorably. The location is great. Easy access off the M5, walking distance to a large Sainsbury's, pub, bowling alley, Italian restautant and cinema. Rooms are standard size with standard furnishings. Three adults fit comfortably. The reception staff is friendly and helpful. My only complaint is that in June with highs in the low 60s our room is uncomfortably warm. Even with the windows open all night our room never cooled down.
Could stand some refurbishmen
Come to think of it, my reports are tending to get longer and longer so I shall attempt to condense this – and subsequent comparisons with Premier Inns and Ibis. This Travelodge shares a large commercial site -just off the M5 on the edge of town -with a Sainsbury grocery store and other merchants. Car parking is very adequate and the place is easy to find. Taunton is a mid way point on the main road from London and the Midlands to the popular south west holiday country. While I saw evidence of workers/ contractors my guess would be that it is used a lot by tourists as that half-way break. Reception was good if basic and the size of room (22) compares very favorably with Ibis Heathrow, about which more in a separate report.. In keeping with Travelodge philosophy there is neither telephone or amenities. The room could have done with some redecoration and the settee had a large hole in the arm which did nothing for the general feel of the place. At GBP51 it compares favorably with Premier Inn. The bed was reasonably comfortable, the shower worked but goodness me – why haven’t all hotel room designers taken notice of the curved rods used by some better hotels to stop that darn shower curtain wrapping itself uncomfortably round you ? And do tiny ‘bathrooms’ really, really need a bath? In an age of water conservation a bath is an anachronism. And, for those of us becoming less agile, getting in and out safely is another very important consideration. Yes, I recognize there are those who can’t wait for a bath after a long day and I appreciate their views – maybe have some rooms where they can pay that little bit extra for the privilege. But these are basic overnight stop hotels, not luxury resorts and I suspect most folks could put up with a shower instead of a soak. One final complaint – it is 2008 – 5 terrestrial channels on a small cheap TV is not good enough when satellite is so easily available. The last couple of items apply equally to Premier Inns and Ibis (who admittedly have got one or two foreign language channels on their larger, more up-to-date TV’s) Summary - OK but needs some upgrades.
Great for overnight stop
Stayed in a family room with our daughter for one night en route to Cornwall. Warm and helpful welcome from reception and clean room. Basic, but thats why we went for this type of budget accommodation. There is a delightful pub with log fires just around the corner which served delicious bar food, but you may want to check what time they stop serving. very efficient and convenient for travelers.
Pleasantly surprised
When we read the reviews, we were a bit worried about going there, but we was pleasantly surprised. We had a lovely room, quite modern, very comfortable bed, and a nice bathroom,. The receptionist was very helpful and friendly. It is a good location for visiting places of interest. All in all we will be going back. I just wonder where these people stayed, because we were very happy with it.
Vile
DO NOT STAY AT THIS HOTEL, GRUBBY, SHABBY, ARE THE BETTER WORDS I CAN FIND FOR IT. Even at the special rates of £19 or £29 this is too much money. Traveldoge should be paying their guests to stay in such a flea pit. Complained on website over 2 months ago and still waiting for any correspondance back.
Never again!
We stayed here in one of their Family Rooms on the drive down to Cornwall on the Bank Holiday weekend at the end of May. We booked a year in advance (when we booked the holiday in Cornwall) and I had a print-out stating the price of the room was £49. When we arrived we were told the price was now £56. On querying this, the receptionist was singularly unhelpful - saying she could not override the price, and neither could she ring central reservations - we would have to use our mobile phone. Getting through by mobile was a nightmare - you know the routine: "if you are ringing about x, press 1; if you are ringing about y press 2"...and no matter what you press you end up listening to canned muzak. My husband gave up and ended up going back to reception to ask her to phone - this she did, with great reluctance, then grumpily handed the phone over to my husband to explain the situation. Travelodge refunded the difference - but after a 5 hour drive, we could have done without the additional hassle. Oh, and when we asked to have breakfast the next morning we were told they had run out - well, it was only the Bank Holiday weekend; perhaps they didn't expect it to be busy. The room? The room was GRIM. I suspect the previous occupant was an Old English Sheepdog judging by the amount of long white hairs on the carpet. There were ants in the bathroom, the overflow in the bathroom was dripping constantly and noisily. The whole room was tatty and in dire need of redecoration. We stayed in the same Travelodge two weeks later on the way back - no ants or dripping overflow this time, thankfully, but the room was still tatty (one of the legs on the double bed was broken) and in need of a thorough clean. The receptionist this time was new and very pleasant - she put the room through at £49 without question, rather begging the question...why couldn't the first receptionist have done the same thing? Travelodges are cheap and basic but that shouldn't translate to dirty and sub-standard. Basic is fine, so long as it's clean and in good repair. We won't be using Travelodge again.
Avoid like the plague!!!!
When i checked into the hotel the receptionist was polite but she was on the phone to her friend about what she did the night before so i felt a bit like i was disturbing her. I got to my room, which i have to admit was very spacious with a bed shoved right up against the wall with an old tatty and ripped duved slung across it. The bedside light didnt work and the bulb in the main light looked as though it was only a 20 watt bulb so not much light. The bathroom although spacious had the remains of the previous guest in it and the bath had enough mould around it to grow potatoes. After returning to reception to complain i was given a form to fill in, these were already printed and ready on reception so it was obvious they are used to complaints. I was told someone would be sent to my room but they never arrived. In the end i was too tired to do any more and went to sleep. I took pictures of the dirty bathroom and will email them to the company head office. If you want somewhere clean to stay.... its not here.
Avoid it
Well past its sell-by date. I was greeted by a rubbish strewn car park and the intercom hanging off the wall. Didn't get much better inside, this hotel needs redecoration. Inside the room, things were clean and tidy but dowdy. The TV didn't work and I had to move to a smoking room as that was all that was available. However, the receptionist, who gave me a very friendly reception, did everything she could to help. The rooms suffer from a high level of road noise from the boy racers going round the roundabout. Just about worth a twenty six quid Supersaver one night stopover but not fifty quid plus. You'll get better value for money at the similarly priced Premier Travel Inn, better beds, bedding and decoration as well as location.
cant fault it
we stayed here for a stop over night 2 adults and 3 children very helpful friendly reception , large family room with plenty space clean bathroom, with shower and bath, theres a pub restaurant next door and a sainsbury close by for breakfast in the morning we also visited mcdonalds and the hollywood bowling in the retailpark opposite
