Red Lion Hotel

We booked an overnight stay at this hotel, before travelling to france from portsmouth.Having booked it through Laterooms.com, we paid an excellent price of around £40 for 2 people,including breakfast.I have to say i was very impressed at the hotel on arrival. It was spotless, and had a lovely bar/restaurant area, and a secure car park,This was important to us, as our car was loaded up with luggage/bikes etc, ready for our trip to france early morning. Stayed here for a weekend in August ..... very disappointing. We booked two doubles (parents and two kids) at a cost of nearly €700 for three nights. They simply don't want children to stay here. I'm sure it would be fine for older couples, but if you have children , avoid this hotel at all costs. Staff are just downright mean to kids. Didn't feel like we were welcome with children at all. Very pleasant overnight stop in this pub in the very attractive town of Fareham. We were only sorry to arrive too late for dinner; those still dining seemed to be enjoying their meal! Unfortunately, no bar meals were available on a Fri night; this would be worth checking when booking. We didn't get to eat breakfast either as we left before 7am! Rooms rather old-fashioned and dark, but impeccably clean and functional. Plenty of secure parking. Far better value en route for a ferry than a Portsmouth box! (£50 b and b)

Have been staying here for 5 nights on business. Got a smoking room, which I didn't want. Room was also a single bed which I can't believe in the 21st century. Asked for another room but was told hotel was full, but I think this was code for 'We can't be bothered'. Room was very tired, poorly furnished and bathroom was very old fashioned (60's, not Victorian charm!) Only redeeming feature was the food, freshly cooked and nicely presented. I have stayed here many times and would describe this hotel as just ok. I am very particular about bathrooms, so it is always the first thing I look at when staying anywhere new. Whilst this bathroom had new tiles, they are small and pale yellow, and have acheived the effect of looking like a public lavatory. In addition, they have failed to replace the old lino in the bathroom. The same can be said of the room - the wall decor and funishings are all new, but they have left an old and tired carpet.
