The Winchester Hotel

My husband booked this hotel to give us a couple of days relaxation after the stress of Christmas and New Year. Above all we wanted to recharge our batteries. The hotel is not cheap and we expected a good level of service and quality. The service was adequate, the breakfast was cold and therefore poor, the bedroom was small and extremely cold. Booked 3 days before my birthday on 01.01.09 thru lastminute.com. Upon arrival, receptionist took 10 mins to check us in. She was friendly enough, offering adjoining rooms (2 adults/2 children) but the system was soo slow! Despite the hotel only having a dozen guests, we were allocated rooms on third floor, accessible through a maze of corridors and 2 lifts. We stayed here for a weekend break. We had an enjoyable stay, we found the hotel to be clean and nicely decorated with a friendly atmosphere and pleasant staff. There were a couple of very minor niggles but nothing you wouldn't find anywhere else and they were rectified immediately so it was no problem. Fabulous breakfast, we had to wait on Sunday morning for a table as the dining room was busy, but only about 5 minutes or so. Firstly we had to pay £5. per day to park the car, the car park at the hotel belonged to the council. The room was so hot we had to keep the air con. on all night. The service at breakfast was appalling, we had to ask 3 times for tea and toast, and the toast was cold when it arrived. Breakfast was only served between 8 and 10am Building contractors woke us at 7.55 with their machinery. The shower was only luke warm.

Before I booked my stay here, I read the poor reviews and spoke to the hotel about them. They assured me that the reviews were heavily skewed and not representative! I booked a 5 day stay....mistake!! Staff quite unfriendly, hotel - general petty meanness, we were 3 staying in one room (2 adults & a child)- there was 1 bottle of water left in our fridge and one packet of biscuits (consisting of 2 biscuits), extra £15 per day for broadband- on top of £95 room charge!!, blanket on the bed was so filthy I left it at reception,... more

Reading recent review on this hotel made me a bit skeptical – so I prepared myself for the worst. However, from calling up to make the booking right through to checkout I could not fault anything. The hotel is great, room décor was stylish, food definitely value for money (try the burger!!) and the service was very friendly. I even managed to do a bit of celeb spotting in the hotel! Would definitely recommend.

recent poor reviews made me nervous about this place but we found it very acceptable and had no problems at all. Its really a motel on the edge of the city centre, with a big council car park in front ( £5 a night to park) so dont expect a nice view! We found staff to be polite throughout. In the executive room you get bathrobes and slippers, coffeemaker and fresh cookies delivered each afternoon to your room. We booked this hotel for a large number of our wedding guests recently. We had pre-booked 20 rooms, but ended up with our guests occupying well in excess of that number. The wedding itself was not at the hotel, but a few miles away. The main problem with the hotel was the failure of the booking system. Guests had booked rooms in advance, quoting the reference number which the hotel had given us. We stayed at this hotel because it is close to the train station. Our room was ordinary (though it cost more than our rooms in London or Oxford). Our complaint is this: my husband left behind his pants and sports jacket in the closet. We emailed and called the next day from London, when we realized our mistake. We provided all the dates: (March 29), and our room number, and were assured that the clothes would be mailed on to our home. Stayed at the Winchester after a burst water pipe in our house forced us to find emergency accommodation. I guess we got the last room in the hotel as it was dirty, small and very uncomfortable. Dirty - the pillows thrown on our beds had stains on them, white stains, as did the bed covers. Not pleasant. Small - the bed was a standard double size, must be the only hotel in the world still using these. Uncomfortable - lumpy beds, cold room, air conditioning dried the air out so we couldn't breathe.
