The place is run down and tatty. They charged us £135 for one night so my expectations were pretty high, but they failed to meet the standards of the cheapest B&B I have ever stayed at (at £22 per person per night). Bedroom was small and had a tiny TV which received only... more

If you EVER consider going there don't. It really is Faulty Towers, yet they charge £147 per room for ONE night. We have just come back from there. The room was tiny; the place stank; the wallpaper was peeling and the ceiling was leaking (In the room and downstairs). The... more

It was OK
Got a very last minute deal for the Feb half term. Just me and the children went (they are age 8&9). Did 2 nights with a rate of £149 for the 3 of us and we stayed in a four poster room with sofa bed. The deal was half board, however you do have to pay extra for the children's meals which are £3.50 breakfast and £6.00 for 2 course dinner or £9.00 for 3 course. Have to say that the food was very nice. Breakfast was plentiful too. Our room was a good size, very clean (hard bed unfortunately for me) but we cycled and walked over the days we were there so we were tired. Burley is a lovely village. I hired a bike from the Cycle Shop down there, and we buzzed off for a 10 mile round trip to Holmsley, stopping at the Old Station Tea Rooms for lunch, which although a bit pricey, very nice. The hotel is a 3*. Staff very friendly and helful. Children are made very welcome. There is a very small and not that warm indoor pool!!!! BUT the kids don't care and they enjoyed having it to themselves. The pool area is very dated, so don't expect anything special. There is a nice big lounge where we flopped in and played Monopoly by the fire. Just finished refurbing the reception area and lounges. Would I return .... yes
better than ever!
We had our wedding reception at Moorhill House Hotel 10 years ago and decided to take a trip back there for our anniversary. Everything was perfect, the staff were friendly and professional and although they were very busy, nothing was a problem and they dealt with all of our requests with a smile. Our room was a four poster in the new part of the hotel (they weren't there when we got married!) and it was fabulous. The bed was the most comfortable I have ever slept in. When speaking to the manager we found out that the lounges and bar are all having a re-fit in Janauary - so I don't think we'll leave it so long before we come back again. Thank you everyone who made our weekend so wonderful. If I had to criticise anything, I would say that they could have done with one extra person serving dinner as they were really busy, - but that would be being really picky!!
Poor Room- Very Expensive
we arrived with our 2 year old and check in was smooth. Then the issues started... The family room was large but was something from the 1980's. All flowers and water leakage stains on the ceiling. And it was freezing. (They did bring a heater up for us) The bunkbeds where the same as we see in our caving hut accommodation (£4 per night). The double bed was large but so hard that it was impossible to sleep. The room was clean but because it's decor was so old it felt dirty. We were very disapointed in the whole experience. The TV was a small 14inch portable, we could hardly see it from the bed. We had to get drinking water in jugs from reception, none was provided in the room. We ate in the restaurant, the food was OK, same as a pub for twice the price. The service was very slow. They focused on re-laying tables more than checking if things were ok. We will not be going back, this experience cost £160 for 1 sleepless night. (this price includes nearly £4 for a slice of toast for our daughter's for breakfast!) We'll stick with a travel lodge in future.
Way overpriced
We stayed at the hotel for 2 nights as was attending a wedding. Check in seemed to be smooth and quick. There are lots of stairs in the hotel to the rooms with no apparent lift so not great if you find it difficult to get up stairs. We had booked DBB for the first night and BB for the second. Dinner at the hotel can only be described as a disgrace. Despite having dinner included in our tariff a number of the items on the menu carried additional supplements including the starters so our £125 a night rate soon started increasing. The food was bog standard - fillet steak was tough, mushrooms dripping in grease and not once did the waitress ask how our meal was. I have had better food at a Brewers Fayre pub! We decided not to risk the dessert course so joined some friends in a nearby pub. When we got back from the pub at around 10:45pm the hotel bar was shut and the woman behind reception grumbled about having to re-open it for us - how rude of us! We were hoping for a relaxing night of sleep only to be woken at 6am by a delivery van which the driver left the engine running for about 20 minutes right outside our room. The room we had was the best part of the hotel - it was clean, spacious and very comfortable - the good bits ended here. Breakfast was the worst attempt at a cooked breakfast I have possibly ever had. Three of us picked from the selction of offerings on the menu - they got all three of the selections wrong! The plate was swimming in grease - the egg was a crispy shrivelled rubber mess. I could continue.......Again no hint of anyone asking if everything was OK. Overall the hotel is understaffed with poor stanadards and extremely overpriced - don't bother!
Loved it!
After reading previous reviews was a little nervous as to what I was going to! No need to have worriesd, the hotel is lovely. It is a typical country style hotel right on the edge of the new forest, near the village of Burley (a quaint little village with a few great gift shops, tea rooms and pubs!) On arrival at the hotel staff were friendly and helpful. The room was spacious (superior room) and very clean, overlooking the hotel gardens. The food was fantastic and the pool/sauna although very small was fun to use after a day out walking. I would go back to this hotel without a doubt, it provided a lovely, relaxing break with a few luxuries added in. My only slight criticism would be that the hotel was understaffed on reception/bar in the afternoon/evening, not a problem for me as a guest but felt for the one member of staff that seemed to be running the whole hotel!
Sad and Disappointed
My wife and I have stayed at Moorhill House on a number of occasions but on the last two visits we were sadly disappointed. On our last visit we arrived early evening to find nobody on reception a very displeased wedding party and reception, bar and lounge areas strewn with glasses plates and other rubbish. Eventually we were shown to our room after finding a member of staff working behind the bar and trying to run reception on her own. Later after dinner which was continually interrupted with disgruntled wedding guests trying to find staff to attend there reception needs we retired to the lounge for coffee only to find all the earlier mess which had not been removed. The following evening there was a similar story with more very unhappy wedding guests who were turned away from the bar even though they were unable to get served in there own reception room on this occasion a senior member of staff started making derogatory comments about other guests to me ( I wonder what she said about me to them). Throughout our visit we were made to feel an inconvenience rather than a welcome guest who after all paid a more than fare price for far less than fare service. The management seemed totally unable to recruit enough trained staff to cover the needs of both events and hotel guests. We will not be using this hotel in future and would therefore not recommend it to others until things improve.
Faulty Towers (without the fun!)
We booked this hotel because of the description on the website (Bad idea) upon arrival we were told to watch out for the buckets collecting the water dripping from the roof on the way to our room. There seemed to be only one member of staff on duty all day, she ran the reception, restaurant, bar and looked after the rooms. The roof in the bedroom had a leak as well ( The leak downstairs looked about two weeks old going by the stains on the ceiling) The bed linen was stained, the wallpaper was peeling, there was an all permeating smell, the TV was tiny and only worked occasionally, the bed was rock hard. The breakfast was horrible, everything was deep fried and the "sauté" potatoes were old and gone off before they were deep fried. The pool was decrepit and tiny. We will not be going back.
Nice hotel in lovely location
I looked at TripAdvisor reviews of practically every New Forest hotel before booking our stay at the Moorhill House, so thought I should give my own feedback! We've just got back from a three-night stay, and would recommend the hotel - and the vilage of Burley in general - to anyone wanting a 'get away from it all' break for a few days. Our room was very comfortable and well-maintained, and the staff very friendly and welcoming. The food was OK - the evening meals weren't always that inspiring, although the venison I had one night was very good. Some of the options on the menu (such as steaks) are subject to a supplementary charge, but there are always a number of other choices. The cooked breakfasts weren't provided as a buffet, but again no real complaints. The indoor pool was small but clean, and the sauna and mini-gym even smaller. Anyone looking at these facilities as being very important might well be disappointed, but they're not likely to be a main selling point of a traditional country house hotel. The Moorhill House is a 10 to 15-minute stroll to the village, which has a number of tea rooms and a couple of nice pubs. Lyndhurst may be the 'capital' of the New Forest, but we spent less than an hour there before getting the bus back to the peace and quiet of Burley! We'd certainly consider going back to the Moorhill House or one of the three other hotels owned by the same group.
Excellent traditional New Forest Hotel
My husband and I have stayed @ this Hotel on about Five occasions's, we have never been disappointed at any time. We have recommended this Hotel to many friends and even family, who have made repeat visits. Food is wonderful, with a varied menu each night. Some rooms are maybe tired but they are constantly improving them, but let's not forget this is a 3 star hotel in the heart of the forest. You can walk through the forest in 10minutes to Burley, which is a quaint village with everything you need. The indoor swimming pool and sauna could do with a little updating, but it's clean and good fun to use. Staff are alway's attentive and friendly and nothings's too much trouble. I've stayed at numerous hotels in the forest including 4 star rating hotels, but our preferance is to stay here and enjoy total relaxation. Also it appears to be very family/older age group friendly.
Avoid at all costs
In the worst British hotel tradition. Overpriced, badly run and filthy. Our room was replete with peeling wallpaper and a disgustingly dirty bathroom. The shower did not work and the corridors smelt of damp and mould. Management worse than useless and for all this they charge as much as a decent, business-class hotel in a British or American city centre. Avoid at all costs.
