From the time we arrived onwards this hotel disappointed!! we booked in May for a celebration in August requesting adjacent superior rooms. They were as far away from each other as possible and one room was of very poor quality the other was one of the 3 refurbished rooms in the hotel. we moved after 2 nights to be closer together but the only room avalilable was an upgrade!! - this room had ripped curtains peeling wallpaper, children's beds almost in too poor a state to sleep on , rubbish and cigarette ends on balcony. Day changed rooms key machine broke so we and many other people unable to access our room.Breakfast choice was good, evening meal choice very poor because same things came back round just with a slightly different name and a real struggle to eat "5 a day" with lack of vegetables. Restaurant staff very amenable.Spoke to manager- promised reply from Menzies hotels - still waiting!! 4 star - i do not think so !!!

When we arrived the hotel looked absolutely amazing. Compared to the other 3 or 4 hotels on the road it really stuck out as the best. we arrived at three and thats where it went slightly wrong. The receptionist told us that we would not be alowed to acess our room from 3pm as detailed on the website. the receptionist told us this was due to being fully booked the previous night. we waited about an hour before a senior member of staff came and offered us drinks for the wait and were told that we would have to wait another half hour.
Although the wait was so long when we got into our room it was amazing. we had an ajoining room with a sofa bed and a telly as well as a balcony looking over the pool and sea. The other half of the room was also lovely it had a king sized bed and another t.v as well as as a giant bathroom with a seperate bath and shower. the room was very large compared to other rooms in this country.
The leisure club was very good and we really enjoyed the use of both inddor and outdoor pools. The jacuzzi was small but relaxing and so was the sauna.
The brekfast was very enjoyable and unlike some hotels was replaced every 20 to 25 minutes. unfourtantely we could not use the restrauant in the evening as you can not wear jeans, shorts, trainers or sandles; whch was a pity as we had no long trousers due to expectations of warm weather.
The location is great complete with a one minute walk to the beach. also there are well kept gardens next to the hotel. on the sea front next to the carlton is the menzies east cliff which looked very dated and rejected.
Generally the staff were foreign but tried their best to resolve any problems. there were some english staff and they were much more helpful. all of our queries were sorted out some slower such as our wait which was dealt with well by the duty manager as the general manager was lazy and could not control the hotel properly. quite simply this hotel needs a new manager and with one it would be much more sucessful.
Overall this hotel is very good but due to poor management it only gets an eight out of ten with new management it would definitely be a ten.

I agree with the previous guest. Hotel to look at very nice. However the staff poor, but the food awful. We had half cooked risotto, bland soup, miniature bread rolls, chewy lamb, shrivelled vegetables. They had run out of desserts by 2.0pm!
Previous visits had been equally disappointing.
Overall the restaurant offers poor quality food lacking in taste.

I think this hotel is beautiful and the staff were really friendly. The food was delicious especially the breakfast! The rooms were cleaned daily and efficiently.
The reception staff were exceptionally helpful and helped with every request. I had an ocean view room, which was spectacular and the bed was massive as well, really comfortable.
The gym was fabulous! The swimming pool and jacuzzi were breath taking. The sauna was lovely! Brilliant facilities!
I would definitely go here again!!!
Loved it!

Stayed here for two nights this November (2005) for our annual weekend away. Everything was perfect except for the food, the staff, the manager and anything else even remotely connected to this god awful hotel.
After politely complaining about the food we had been served that evening (Caesar Salad - 8 inch long pieces of bread soaked in fat, Fish - Tasteless, Chocolate mouse - Like Glue).
We were then informed by the manager that the food could not of been bad as there chef has won awards. After being harassed by the chef (phoned our room after telling the management we did not want to speak with him), left one night early. After hearing the rubbish spoken by the chef about his own cooking I can only imagine the award he won was for an Oscar.
After this dreadful event I felt compelled to write to there head office to complain. All we received was a letter saying, "Sorry you thought the food was too rich".

Most staff courteous and polite with the exception of the one and only female member of staff on duty in the leisure facilities. Our experience here was of disappointment. Hotel information book said leisure facilities were open until 10.00pm...(mistake here which is fine but requires updating, Receptionist said she would look into this). We arrived at leisure facilities 8.45pm to be greeted from a straight faced member of staff. The staff member said in a straight inpolite manner that they close at 9.30pm. We explained politely that the hotel information book stated 10pm. We got a straight matter of fact reply back, "No it's 9.30pm". We got the impression that we were not welcome! I think that the staff member had cleaned up for the evening and was annoyed that we had arrived.
We went in and used the jacuzzi and received unfortunate looks from the member of staff whilst there sadly. We left at 9.25pm and the staff member quickly moved away into another room as we left.
I was really surprised not to be asked when we left the hotel if we enjoyed our stay!
To sum up the Menzies Carlton I would say that rooms could do with a touch up, bathrooms require an update, tv requires updating, breakfast was very good, evening meal very average and staff in dining room were excellent but I did find far too many people attending our table and felt that the numerous staff on duty in the dining room zooming around made the evening not relaxing sadly. Staff in bar excellent and bar prices slightly high.
