Must Try
from graham.king
After booking the hotel, following a recomendation, we told our children where we were going and they proceeded to look at some websites about the hotel. They came across this site and told us to have a look at some of the reviews, we did so and were very unsure about whether we should cancel or go with a colegues recomendation. We are very glad that we decided to give it a go and see what the hotel was like, we stayed for 4 nights in a sea view room. When we arrived at the hotel we were greated straight away by a young gentleman in tails and carnation, we thought there must be a wedding, but this is what they wear everyday! The lovely receptionist checked us in and our bags met us in our room. We couldnt believe the room and the views - they were absolutely amazing. Now back to the previous reviews I could not believe it was the same hotel - rude staff - certainly not. We can honestly say that every single one of them went out of their way to make our stay truly rememberable. The food was of a good standard, not a huge choice but almost evrything we had was of a good quality. Some of the hotel looks very worn out, the lounge is tired and the corridors are awful, but we found out that refurbishment is well underway, as our room showed it. We can definatley say that we are glad that we did not listen to some of the previous reviews and went on and tried it for ourselves. We will certainly be back as soon as we can get away from work. We both have stressful jobs and dont get to go away very often but this will be on our list to return to.
NASTY!!

Myself and family stayed here for almost 2 wks recently and that was too much. The hotel is in need of some serious decorating, the staff are rude and the rooms were appauling considering what we paid. The weekend came and we were told we would have some entertainement on GREAT we thought, baring in mind we are a young family we got some young bloke playing an organ to old folk doing their old time dancing whilst most of us went outside. They obviously do not cater enetertainment wise for the younger person, we had enough, when we were told we were getting the same guy the following week we went out instead. The meals were ok, but you don't get what you pay for by far. Overall, too expensive for what you get, not to be recommended unless you like the old waltz and over priced drinks and dark dingy rooms of course. We will not be returning.
Great staff. Bad rooms

We stayed at the Livermead for 5 nights. Myself, husband and 13 year old daughter. I've been to Torquay loads of times cos my grandparents live there. This time we decided to stay in a hotel rather than stay with my granparents mainly because our "little one" is now 13 & I thought a hotel would give her more to do during the day and in the evening. When we arrived at the hotel, I was pretty impressed. The outside looked nice and the reception area and bar/restaurant looked good. We checked in & went to our rooms. We had a heavy suitcase so decided to take the "lift". I changed my mind when we got there cos I didn't trust that it was going to get us to the 2nd floor. Its THE oldest lift in the world. Anyway, we got to the 2nd floor and the coridor was dark & dingy with exposed pipes running along the ceiling. Totally different from the reception & downstairs area. Our room was shabby and clearly hadn't had a lick of paint or an update in years! The sliding doors on the wardrobe didn't slide, the bathroom was very tired looking & it was very small. (1 double bed with a single bed for our daughter). Now, this room wasn't cheap. Okay it was the height of the season and not as expensive as some of the other hotels in the area, but it still cost us around £120 per room, per night. I was pretty disappointed at this stage. Anyway, we figured that our room would only be "somewhere to sleep" so we just got on with it. That night, we were "lucky" enough to have some entertainment on at the hotel bar. Basically, it was a bloke on a yamaha keyboard playing the tango & waltz for the older guests. The younger guests congragated outside with their vodka & oranges (like we did!). Still, after a few cheeky white wines, we were tango-ing with the best of them. It was all very cheesy, but a real giggle! The next morning, we came downstairs for breakfast. This is when the hotel really shone! The breakfast was great. Firstly, you help yourself to cereal, yoghurt & fruit, etc. The waitress then comes to take your breakfast order (full English, etc). The then bring you toast and coffee. The staff are realy good at the Livermead and really can't do enough for you. One night, after a few beers I got a case of the munchies. I asked the bar manager whether they sold chocolate (like I said, I'd had a few..). Obviously they didn't but 10 mins later he came over with a massive tray of after diner mints!!! I can't speak highly of the staff enough. They are great! If you've got kids, I really don't think you can go wrong (as long at the weather is nice). The pool area is great and my daughter loved it! Utlimately, we only spent 1 day by the pool (the rest out & about in Torquay), but she was really impressed. Anyway, overall we had a pretty good time at the Livermead. Okay, the rooms are pretty grim (there ARE some nicer ones though apparently) but ultimately, we were treated well. We had a laugh & we WILL go back. Beware though, the bar is VERY expensive! (£5.90 for a double brandy & coke!!!)
Good Location, Poor Service
from Lynsey73
This hotel is in the most perfect location with excellent views of the sea and harbour. Unfortunately that is the only good thing I can say about it. The hotel itself was clean and only slightly old fashioned. The rooms were tiny and the bathroom was the size of a shoebox!! We had two problems, the staff and the restuarant. The staff on reception were rude and kept us waiting 25 minutes just to check in all because they were to busy chatting on the phone, then we had to wait for the room key because another guest had it! We requested a smoking room and was allocated a non-smoking room, requested an iron this was no-where to seen! Breakfast the following morning was terrible again we had to wait nearly 20 minutes for someone to serve us and when we asked the waiter for service he said "thats not my table" and walked off!! When the breakfast eventually arrived it was only enough to feed a 3 year old and at the temperature they like. On our final day the service for breakfast was only slightly better we only had to wait 10 minutes!! But the icing on the cake was the leak in the wardrobe, yes you read it right the wardrobe, we opened the wardrobe door to remove our clothes and a trail of water was cascading down the shelves, an upstairs bedroom obviously had a leak when someone got in the shower. Overall, the price we paid was far from value for money and I wouldn't recommend this hotel again unless you have a very small appetite and like sleeping in cornflake boxes.
Lamentable

This is typical of hotels which seem to be under the impression that it's 1982, rather than 2006. The decor is so dated and tired and my room ( 9 ) on the ground floor had the sort of bathroom that would shame a 3 bed semi. The food was the worst aspect of all. The dinner consisted of something called paella which was rice with bits of something mixed in, an asparagus soup which was watery and maybe had had an asparagus waved over it, the main course was a tasteless piece of plaice....appalling. For this effort they charged £24-95, which is about £20 too much. Next day I at breakfast I ordered poached egg....it was hard and the toast was like leather........oh dear! The hotel has a great position on the water and could be great....for now, though, avoid!
Best location in the area

My wife and I found this hotel when driving along the road from Brixham. We were shown a corner room overlooking the bay. A pleasant sea breeze was available by opening both windows and creating a croos flow of air. The hotel was clean/comfortable and breakfast was quick and well presented. We did not eat dinner at the hotel. Because of the location we were able to enjoy drinks outside on the lawn. Most other hotels in the area sit across a busy road to downtown Torquay. From what I could see this is the only hotel located directly on the water. We would stay here again in a heartbeat - if we could get the bay side rooms!
Treated like royalty on a romantic weekend.

A late birthday treat took us to this delightful hotel right on the seafront in Torquay. Rooms advertised with wonderful sea views have often disappointed but our room overlooked the whole bay and the stunning blue sea. The staff were very polite and friendly at all times and made my birthday supper very special. The food was of a high quality matched by an excellent wine cellar. Our room was clean and recently decorated. I understand that the whole property is being refurbished and this will only add to its current excellent standard. I felt very special after a couple of nights at this hotel and can thoroughly recommend it.
My bed at home is bigger than this room!

Had to stay here recently due to attending a conference but I was unfortunately given the tiniest, single room in the hotel. Added to this, it was located in tre basement which meant I got a lovely view of people's feet as they went to collect their cars. The bathroom was so small that the sink was in the main room....I would never, ever usually put up with such a dreadful room and when I requested if the woman on the front desk could do anything for me the phrase "sucking on a wasp" springs to mind as she couldn't have been more unhelpful. On the plus side (there is ALWAYS a positive somewhere) the food was ok and I didn't have to pay for it. Beware though - this hotel is horrible...
DON'T MENTION THE WAR!! Or the service, or the price, or the rooms...

I booked this hotel at short notice to attend a friend's wedding in Torquay, paying the not inconsiderable sum (for a 3 star hotel in Spring) of GBP109 for one night. We were very disappointed at the size of the room (number 48, I think?) which could only be described as poky. The window looked out onto the car park and main road, and the bathroom appeared to be an artfully-converted wardrobe. Decor was straight out of the mid-70s, with the pink bathroom being the chief offender. Contrary to the description of the room on the Best Western website, there was no hairdryer provided in the room - we had to traipse down to reception to get this. More galling was the fact that breakfast was not included in the price we paid. While I understand that to some extent I was paying for a sea-front location, it is difficult to appreciate this when your room overlooks the car park, and the quality of the room is so poor. Definitely not recommended, except for fans of 70s hotel comedies starring John Cleese.
still great value
