Good leisure facilities and great food
from LondonEuroweekender
Exceptionally convenient if you’re coming by train, more awkward to get parking, though we managed to get a space in their garage. Temperature a bit on the warm side, particularly in the central area near the foyer, but not too bad in the restaurant and lounge. Had to turn radiator off in bedroom. Despite being so near the station, it was road rather than railway noise that tended to be intrusive in the bedrooms (with the windows open). Pool, jacuzzi and gym were fine. Tennis court was also good, though as with other hotels you would need to bring your own equipment if you’re serious players. Food, including breakfast, was simply excellent. Wine pricey but good. Staff very pleasant and efficient. Overall a very enjoyable stay.
Lovely Facilities

This is a good hotel overall with exellent facilities. The reception area, lobby, lounge areas are beautifully appointed. The decor is tasteful and the furniture is comfortable. The compass lounge has beautiful views out to sea. The breakfast was excellent, lots of choice and the staff mainly helpful and friendly. The pool/spa area is clean and well maintained. The rooms are dated in terms of decor but they are clean and ours was cosy and the housekeeping was excellent. The bed was comfortable if slightly short for my tall husband! I would imagine that parking could be a problem during busy months but was fine during our stay in November. It is a perfect distance from the town centre, with a nice 10 minute stroll along the seafront to get there. Entertainment in the evening was an added bonus. A Jazz duo played on Friday night and a singer on Thursday. Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will definitely visit the hotel again and we would recommend it to friends.
Good experience

Having stayed at this hotel as a business traveller for 1 night I can say I was satisfied with my stay. Stayed in a twin room over looking the train station. Trains stop running just before midnight! I used the fitness centre; the indoor pool had too much chlorine in it in my opinion. The outdoor pool was excellent! It is kept at a tropical 32C, so even in late September I still enjoyed an early evening swim. The rooms are well equipped and a good size. Breakfast was excellent! Alot of choice from full English to fruit and continental options. Service was efficient, friendly and I was always served with a smile. The hotels location is good right on the sea front a little away from the main "sea front" with shops etc about a 15-20 min gentle walk. After reading read on here the hotel suffers with parking problems I did see how this could be a problem but was fortunate not to be affected during my stay. The hotel public area's bar, restaurant, reception are all very well maintained and what you would expect of any 4 star hotel. All in all although I only stayed for 1 night I was left with a good impression of this hotel wouldn’t hesitate to stop here again in the future!
Not good
from LOW34
Having stayed at the Grand on a number of occasions, I have never had problems with this hotel - until now. This time, the room I had was truly dreadful. It was small, dominated by the bed and should never have been sold as a double. The decor, which screamed mismatches (curtains, carpet, wallpaper, bedspread and chair) was very tired and grubby. The bathroom was also tired and not very clean. The window opened onto the side of the hotel where the pigeons make their homes and the curtain linings were literally falling apart they were so old (how much do a small pair of curtains cost to replace?). I know the rooms here are variable and the hotel is old, but this room hadn't had a facelift for what looked like years. I was very disappointed. On the plus side - breakfast was good, staff were fine, but not much else.
For the price, terrible

My girlfriend and myself stayed here for 2 nights only 4 days ago and I thought I would update this site, as I had read previous reviews about this hotel. The reason why I choose this hotel was that I left it very very late to book a hotel for the bank holiday break and it was the only one with a room after many many phone calls. When we arrive on Firday, there was hardly any parking. There is a road beside the hotel which the public can use and if you are lucky you can get a space there. You must collect a yellow slip from the reception upon check-in. They have 10-12 spaces in a reserved part of the carpark belonging to the train station which is right next door but that was always full. There is also a garage but that is packed too and there is no guarantee you can get your car out if your require it as the cars are just packed in. Anyway after parking, we checked in. No assistance with bags, plus I ordered a double bed and got a twin bed! So I had to go to reception to ask for it to be corrected. As for the room, 14" tv (why do hotels insist on such bad tvs. It only costs a mere £70 for a half decent 20"+) Very old decor (to be expected given its ages and period) howevr it could do with updating. Not many plug points for laptops or chargers. Rooms were very warm and required windows open all night but as for noise, it was quiet even with windows open, though we were on the side not facing the road. Food. dont get me started. The dinner menu was so over the top with exotic sauces etc etc that there were no standard meals. I had no choice but to dine out of the hotel. BUT and this is were the hotel really let its self down, the breakfast. If there is one meal I need within the day its a breakfast. This hotels' was the worst I have ever seen at any of the 20+ hotels I have visited. There was a choice of 6 cereals, but only 6-8 crossiants out and they were always gone. Tea and 3 measly slice of toast would follow are constant asking staff for service, there were simply too few staff for the number of guests and those that were there found it difficult to understand english as they were foreign. In all it was so dire, I was left annoyed by the sheer price I had paid for such rubbish service and facilities. I mean provide a toast machine, for guests. More juices, more fruit, more anything would hav been better. Anyway breakfast aside, there was another major issue. the Hotel lift. There is 1 yes 1 lift for guests and staff to use. it can only hold 6 people and was always in use. You had to wait ages to get the lift. The stairs were also badly laid out, hard to explain in this post but you had to navigate thruogh corridors and go back and fourth to get downstairs. All in all not the best experience I have had. Parking ,food, rooms, service all poor. All I am saying is the truth, if responed by management I can assure you none of what I have included is false, just my personal experience over 2 nights stay this august.
Dissapointed

Not what I have come to expect from a four star Hotel On arrival no one offered to help us with our bags or advise us on car parking, drinks were very expensive especially the wine,The stair carpets in places were threadbare and the carpets in the Dining room were held together in places with ducting tape on at least one occasion I saw a guest trip on a piece of this tape the food was excellent and all staff were courteous at all times the one elevator was very slow and we resorted to using the stairs to reach our third floor room anyone less spritely would have to spend some time waiting for the elavator.i would rate this Hotel no more than 3 star Yes I would come back but only after refurbishment and an increase in staffing levels.
A pleasent stay - but it rather hot!
from A TripAdvisor Member
The room was adequete with a comfortable and large bed. We also had a single bed in the room but i feel that it world have been a little cramped had there been 3 of us. It did feel slightly grubby though although no real complaints - except the heating. It was so hot it was unbelievable! The bathroom had plenty of clean towels but could have done with a bit of a re-vamp as it was all a bit dated. We arrived Easter Sunday so as i thought the hotel would be full i tried to pre-book a dinner time prior to arrival but with no luck. When we arrived we were told that as the hotel was full the only time dinner could be served to us would be 7pm - a little early as we arrived at 6pm. The bar and restuarant areas were very impressive and the food we had in the evening very enjoyable, although service not as attentive as it could have been. Again the heating in the restuarant was on so high we nearly melted and it did spoil the good quality food somewhat. The breakfast was in my opinion average compared to other hotels i have visited in the UK and the service once again wasn't great. We used the pool and spa facilities and found no problems there. All in all, the location was a little out of town but easily walkable along the front. The hotel was nice but i did think it was a bit expensive for the service we recieved.
a nice hotel

we stayed at the Grand for two nights end of Feb, we found it to be a nice hotel in a great location.OK some areas could do with updating but they seem to be working their way through the hotel at the moment and this didn,t spoil our stay in any way. Breakfast was good ,room service was excellent, staff were friendly and polite.
Great hotel, the Torquay Grand!

As a woman travelling alone on business, I find this hotel one of the best in Devon and they'll do a very good concessionary rate for one night dinner-bed-&-breakfast stays mid-week. The staff are polite and friendly - always a warm welcome - from the cleaners to the waiters! On a business stay recently, I arrived at the hotel late and left my car outside (warning lights flashing) dropped the keys off at Reception and dashed in so as not to miss dinner! The staff weren't at all phased - took the keys, parked my car for me and took my bags to the room and I was able to relax with a drink over my meal. The food is a great bonus of this hotel - delicious. Varied and exotic menu - beautifully presented with fresh produce, exquisitely prepared. Breakfast overlooking the sweeping blue skied bay over the English Riviera is an experience not to be missed - I highly recommend The Grand at Torquay.
just spent a weekend at this hotel! its awful, decor in room very dated, bathroom had yellow painted woodwork covered in dust. cleaned the bathroom myself before using it! the worse part was the mattress with big stained, the bottom of it was torn and there was a big board... more
