Myself, husband and two children age 4 and 8 years, stayed at the Buckerell Lodge for one night, the staff were really friendly and efficient, and extremely helpful. We had an interconnecting room for the children which they loved as they had there own TV, bathroom and tea... more

Fabulous Family weekend
Visited the Hotel as part of our holiday trip to North Devon. This was a break on the journey and what a break. A lovely unassuming hotel wth helpful staff and great food. We had a great cooked breakfast for the two mornings we stayed with grilled tomatoes which tasted of tomato!! Dinner in the evening was a suprising treat, delicious. Accommodation looked newly refurbished and was very clean with good firm beds. All in all a delightful Hotel matched by the beautiful weather and lovely day sightseeing in Exceter town centre.
nice bar and garden
I stayed here for 2 nights on business in April 07. It is a nice hotel with a garden and a bar which is comfortable and not all at intimidating so that I felt fine as a female business traveller spending time there alone. The staff were helpful and efficient and the breakfasts were lovely. 3 small drawbacks to note: it is too far to walk into Exeter city centre so you need a bus or a taxi (£6 journey). It's not a long journey but the traffic on the route (Topsham Road) tends to snarl up badly and cause delays, according to the taxi driver it is notorious locally. The room was rather overheated and the window opened fully above a low extension building, so I did not feel it was wise to leave it open whilst I slept. Also the bed was too soft, and as I have back trouble I always prefer a firm bed. If these are things which aren't important to you then I would certainly recommend this hotel.
Clean and comfortable room, friendly helpful staff
We found the hotel to be very comfortable, and the room was clean and smartly furnished, with a well appointed bathroom. We had a lovely meal in the restaurant, and found the staff to be friendly and helpful. We will definitely stay there again.
Good staff, tinned soup
The rooms were fine although slightly shabby. We shifted furniture around for our 1 year old's cot. The room was above the bar/restaurant so the baby monitor worked fine! The staff were friendly and helpful. The breakfast was good but some of the retaurant food was bland and very over priced. Quiet area but a short walk into the city.
very good hotel
I have read the mixed reviews of this hotel, but I was gladly surprised. The room (a twin room with extra bed) was very big, very good wardrobe, desk, suitcase stand, safe, plenty of ammenities, free newspaper, tea/coffee, biscuits, cumplimentary welcome. The bathroom/shower seemed recently refurbished. Beautiful, plenty of space, hooks, heated towel rack. (There is a problem though, shower water is always too hot.) The beds were fine. No sheets though, only duvet. Location: too far too walk to town center. Easy access by bus. The room/bathroom was very clean. Breakfast was good, especially English Breakfast. Overall a very good stay.
Where are your Taste Buds?
The rooms are just about OK, the staff seemed fine, if a little disinterested, but I do have to take issue with the food in the restaurant. Breakfast wasn't bad - you can't really go wrong with a fried breakfast, but dinner was distinctly average. I'm no gourmet, but I can only think that other reviewers favorite 'restaurants' are Beefeaters and TGI Friday's. They are certainly aiming at a certain part of the market, with poorly cooked steaks and very average chicken dishes that looked like they were prepackaged. It wasn't even reasonably priced. Take a look at the Barcelona in the centre if you want a nice hotel, with a good restaurant serving tasty, well cooked food for a similar price.
Read other reviews - stayed here anyway : it was fine !
Company booking for 4 nights. Having read previous reviews felt very worried about it ! IT WAS FINE !! Staff very helpful, food was EXCELLENT ( breakfast is huge, well cooked and includes 2 fish choices), lunch excellent, and the resturant / evening menu is well above expectation. Ample car parking, good conference room facilities. The hotel is undergoing refurbishment and I did ask to look at 3 seperate bedrooms before I chose which one ( Experienced travellers do that so don't worry about asking to do it too !). The room quality did differ and one not at all suitable, the one I chose was a twin, good decor, non smoking, excellent shower and a full lay out bath - not bad for a 6ft person. Easy walking distance along canal and river exe into town and on a main bus route. I would stay there again.
Do not stay here!
We booked a triple room through a hotel deals web site having held our wedding reception at this hotel 10 years ago. All I can say is 'never go back'. We were given a room with 2 single beds and a camp bed which meant we were unable to walk around the room. The bathroom was covered with black mildew and smelt appalling. The whole hotel looked tired and dirty as the decor had not been changed since we were last there. The breakfast was OK, but they got my order wrong. Stay somewhere else.
Very disappointing - well below my expectations
The rooms were large but it was obvious that the hotel hadn't been decorated since the eighties. The sheets had blood stains, carpets had drink stains. The bar has a beautiful view of their gardens, however every chair was damaged with rips and stained with spilt drinks. There was a hardly visable A4 sized notice stating under refurbishment which was situated in the bar. I must say that the restaurant was lovely and the food better than expected after seeing the state of the rest of the building. The service was slow but the staff were very polite. I will say that if this doesn't put you off at least don't bring young children as on top of the tv they have six porn channels advertised in a very prominent display. I hope they start renovating soon because due to their location it has such great potential.
An Ok experience
Stayed here for one night during August 2004 while on business in Exeter. Got a good deal from the hotel website. Check in was good I arrived before the normal 14:00 check in time but my room was ready. The room was clean if a little tired looking, could do with a bit of modernisation, but it was not offensive. Toilet was clean, but again looked tired. But then if you look closely at any hotel you can see these problems. The main problem with the hotel was the service in the restaurant and the bar. The bar only had one person serving drinks, taking food orders and clearing tables. He was there at lunch time and also during the evening. So I wouldn't like to be doing his hours. The restaurant food was very good. The service though was a little poor. They seemed to have a lot of people working, but most of them just stood around doing nothing. If people are going to do this then they should not stand around in the public areas. In conclusion it is a nice hotel, if I could get the same deal again I would go back. I wouldn't like to pay full price for the experience.
