Would give Barnstaple a wide berth
Crossroads meets Hi-di-hi. Very 1970s, in need of updating and on the edge of a dual carriageway next to a bowling alley (having said that friendly staff and a decent breakfast). BUT the bigger question is why on earth would you want to stay in Barnstaple? don't be fooled into thinking this is an idyllic Devon town. It's truly one of the most dreadful places I've ever visited in my entire life - limited restaurants (classiest is probably the Wimpey on the high street!), dreadful pubs and just a really ugly and pointless place. Would... more
Management response from TravelAgent-Stacie

Thankyou for your review on our hotel, I would like to point out that there are hundreds of people who think differently about Barnstaple, having lived here for 27 years I thoroughly enjoy it myself, but it is not to suit everyone, like most places in the world. I would also like to add that we are having a major refit at the moment, to kill off the 'motel' look, and look forward to seeing you all soon. kind regards Manager Of Barnstaple Hotel

Freindly staff and outstanding food
We had a family gathering here for 3 nights in October. The staff were lovely and made a real effort to accommodate us; dogs, kids and all. The rooms were good and the bathrooms excellent. The quality of the food was outstanding, everything we ordered was delicious. Good portions and way above what you would expect. The indoor swimming pool was ideal for young kids as the water was nice and warm. We would definitely visit again.
very friendly
very friendly staff, adequate rooms and very good clean bathrooms. Two swimming pools and very family friendly. Breakfast was excellent! This is my second stay and would reccomend the hotel. Good mix of tourists and business travellers. Only thing I would say is check bill on check out, last year I was charged fot breakfast and this year my daughter was even though I had pre paid B&B. Staff friendly and soon changed the ammount
Noisy Night at Barnstaple
I stayed here on a Saturday night in August. At check in I was greeted by someone who appeared to be attending a wedding who, when I said I wanted to check in went and found a receptionist. I was given the usual guest register to fill in and then forgotton about. When the receptionist did return she told me that "...I'm doing three things at once...". I wanted to check that full payment had been taken in advance by credit card and was told it had not. In fact, it had, but this took more button pressing by the receptionist in... more
Marvellous!
After some recent hotel experiences we were most pleasantly surprised by our stay at The Barnstaple. From arriving at Reception until our departure the level of service was of a standard we thought had long been forgotten in this country. The staff were unfailingly cheerful, courteous and efficient, how they dealt with problems we don't know because there weren't any. The good sized room was spotless with the en suite having an easy to work and effective shower. Originally booking B & B with dinner on the first... more
Fantastic value for money.
Had an absolutely awesome time here. First time ever that I've really felt completely at home in a hotel. Last minute booking at 10pm at night after a stupidly long drive, the staff were very freindly and got me a room for £60 including breakfast. No complaints so far. The room itself was absolutely spotless. Its usually the little things that annoy me, but searching it from head to toe there wasn't a single thing out of place or with the slightest bit of dirt. Was almost as if it was a hotel showroom. If I'd been told that the... more
ok, but a bit like pontins
i stayed here on business, the hotel has a 70's decor reception. Parking is good. They have good leisure faclities. My room was clean but the fixtures are worn. The staff was excellent as was the food. A good percentage of the rooms are outside, which i did not like. My room was outside. The hotel is ok, as there is little choice in Barnstaple.
nice hotel.
[-]We recently stayed in this hotel for 1 night, partly to visit friends in North Devon, and secondly to travel on to our sons passing out parade in Dartmouth. The hotel we stayed in before was booked up so we thought lets visit friends as well. We booked in and were treated well and professionally, the public areas were slightly tired but very clean and tidy. we visited in Ramadan and asked for breakfast at 4.30 and were served with it in our room with a smile and good attitude by the night porter/manager, thank you. we would reccomend... more
Quality
I have stayed at the Barnstaple Hotel quite a few times in the last few years whilst visiting relatives. I also stayed here during the Christmas break last year. I have always been impressed by the general upkeep and condition of the décor and facilities throughout the hotel. I say this because I have stayed in various hotels throughout the UK, including Hilton, Marriott and Copthorne establishments, and all them needed some form of refurbishment. In all them there were small items such as the television controller with the numbers... more
1970s motel
Just returned from staying 1 night in The Barnstaple Hotel which is more like a 1970s motel than a hotel. The hotel was clean and the staff friendly but it was on a dual carriageway, next to a bowling alley - not exactly what we expected !!!!!
