i have arrived home today after staying at the at durrant house hotel for four days on half board .i went with a coach party from chesterfield .it was a very enjoyable stay .the food was very good well cooked and served hot ,soup delicious .fresh meat and veg .staff friendly .rooms clean,beds and pillows very comfortable

stayed here last month, couldn't have made a worse choice, lots of noise from function room until the early hours, service rushed and shoddy, food not worth waiting for overall not an experiance to be repeated.
will go back to saunton sands next year, slightly more expensive but miles ahead in every respect.

Good value

Visited for 4 nights as part of a coach party, paid extra for better room. No problems, room was very good, with view over the estuary. Large well furnished and clean, bed not too good but reasonably comfortable. Evening meal was excellent, fair choice, fresh vegetables and more than ample quantities, evening entertainment reasonable, breakfast was plain and simple ,but when considering the cost of this trip in all was very good value. The staff ,mostly foreign, efficient and quick service. In fact looked after us very well, our party numbered 40+ and all seemed very happy with the entire trip. Would definitely visit again. Incidentaly this Harry Shaw Coach trip was one of the best we have taken, good coach good itinary and exceptional driver.
Much better than expected

We stayed at this hotel for a couple of nights as part of a coach tour in February 2010. Having read the reviews before we set off, we were not expecting too much from the hotel but were quite pleasantly surprised. The rooms were clean (and warm, it was bitterly cold outside), and quite acceptable. The staff were mostly Eastern European but spoke quite good English and were all pleasant and friendly. The food was perfectly acceptable with a reasonable selection. OK, some people complained that there were no beans with the full English breakfast, but that is surely not the end of the world! Previous reviewers have mentioned that coach trips eat in the downstairs restaurant and that there is not a lot of entertainment. In our case there was a DJ and dancing after the meal until about 9:30, when the downstars bar closed. We did not find it any great inconvenience to go up to the bar in the main reception area. It is worth noting that drinks prices are quite reasonable. The hotel is situated on the outskirts of Bideford, but there is a bus stop right outside the hotel, and there is a regular service for the 10 minute trip into the town (bus no 21 or 21A). Bideford itself is a nice little town with an interesting old Pannier market. The last wooden three-masted schooner still sailing, the Elizabeth & May, is berthed at the port and is open to the public. We did not pay a great deal for our trip and would say that is was very good value for money. If I were staying at the hotel paying full rate I would say that it was a perfectly acceptable hotel but nothing outstanding.

4 nights B & B + dinner @ £69 each made us a bit doubtful, but we checked in quickly ,soon after 2pm, and after that enjoyed excellent meals, reasonable 'senior' entertainment in the evenings, and a bus stop right outside, with a regular 20 minute service to Bideford, Barnstaple, Appledore and Westward Ho! Adequate car parking, and although there were three coach parties, in addition to our group of Majestic self drive guests, meals were served fairly promptly by the willing and helpful, mainly foreign, young waitresses and waiters. Dinner choices were made at breakfast, from a selection of 3 different choices. WE HAVE NO COMPLAINTS to air, and will probably stay there again, to finish of the North Devon area.
Great hotel for touring North Devon

We are a mature couple and travelled with our two friends, another mature couple. We took up the hotel's offer of a four nights break in February. Unsure of what to expect, we were delighted. The reception was friendly. Our rooms were not facing the sea, we were on a bargain break, but they were comfortable, well furnished, had a large flatscreen TV and free WiFi. We took our evening meal in the bar where the value and choice was excellent. Breakfast was included and served in a small dining room. All of the staff were very friendly and attentive. There were three large coach parties staying at the hotel at the same time. They were on half-board and had their meals in a separate room. After their dinner the room was open for everyone where there was a bar a dance floor and evening entertainment. We enjoyed a superb four nights stay and would be happy to recommend the hotel to everyone.
Better Than Expected.....

We have just returned from a 4 night stay at the Durrant. I went with my parents & sister, booked through Majestic self drive special offer, 4 night HB for £69!! Obviously we were concerned as to the standards we were going to experience for the very cheap short break. On arrival, we had to wait until 3.30pm to book in even though 2pm was what we were originally told. There was a huge queue with 2 coach loads that arrived & we had to queue....! We had 2 rooms on the ground floor & we were pleasantly surprised. The rooms were clean, comfortable & stylish. The bathrooms had been recently updated & were extremely stylish with marble walls & floors, glass sinks & it was clean. Some finishing still needs to be done & I would have loved to have been the project manager when this work was being done. No way would I have allowed things to be left as they were. The evening meal.....large round tables were laid in the ballroom & we had to share with strangers. Not something I like but our fellow diners were friendly & as apprenhensive as were about the standard of food to follow. As it was, the food was very good & plentiful. The service was excellent & professional. All the staff were friendly, polite & attentive. There was evening entertainment of a DJ on Monday & Thursday evening. A female singer on Tuesday, who was excellent & an hour of bingo on Wednesday evening which was poorly organised by a member of staff who had a serious attitude problem & a few people complained about her. The only hiccup during a very good stay. We had a very good time & we would recommend this hotel.

We went as part of a huge group last october. We all try different places and with the Durrant House web site it seemed such a fantastic place to go! How wrong were we! They only thing good i can honestly say was the food and the rooms! There was no entertainment all, there was if you payed hundreds of pound's for your stay. As we had a packaged holiday we were chucked in what I could describe as a cold basebent for food and one night's entertainment down there with and organist! They bar shut at 9.30pm and futher drinks would have to be bought up on the first floor! DISGUSTING!!! We had alot of older ladies with us and ffor them it was horrible as they were bounded to this ridiculous organist where as the other's went on into the town of bideford for evening activities! I just hope you all dont get to experince exactly what we did!

Stayed at the Durrant for a black tie dinner, check in painless to a recently modernised and comfortable room. Good size and nice bathroom but decor a little too "prostitute" for us with leather sloping and padded bed backs and tables. An interesting contrast to the tudorbethan dining room which in turn contrasted the italiante garden and reception and seventies domer roof extension.... That said our stay was fair, the staff are overwhelmingly Romanian but courteous. The breakfast was cold and the toast was suited for origami and not eating. The evening meal was fair although the vege option was a bit of a farce and insubstantial. Would I stay there again? Yes at the price but not for anything over £70 a night. Oh, and internet at £2 / 20 mins.... get real
Not the best of Hotels we've stayed in

We stayed in the Durrant House in Bidiford from the 29th Jan to the 1st Feb 2010. We were allocated room 252 at first glance it appeared O.k. but in the evening when we went back to change one realised the light over the mirror did not work when I needed a shave,this was brought to the Staff attention but nothing was done. There was no where to hang or place any of ones make up bag etc one was only issued with one small portion of shampoo and shower gel for one person , had to keep asking for more ,one could not stand up in the shower with out having the shower curtain against you and a sloping ceiling against you from the other side. The worst shower/bathroom we’ve ever been allocated with a room. There was no wardrobe only a rail across the corner of the room with some hangers to hang ones clothes. The radiator had the valve removed so one either endued a very hot room or open the window and freeze with a frost out side; most radiators I noticed had their thermostats removed. The room never got hoovered or shower gels etc replenished The breakfasts were a hit or miss, order porridge and the main breakfast would arrive or it was cold. They crowed about offering a full English breakfast but there would not be any beans . Dinner was acceptable. The Hotel in it self is situated a £5 taxi ride outside town and as the main function rooms were taken over by a large event there was nothing to do but go into town.
Dreary, tasteless hotel with cleanliness issues

What can I say apart from that I wouldn't stay here again. The room had a stale 'seen life' smell. Everything needed a clean. The windows in restaurant were filthy and smeary. The glass table top was covered in greasy finger marks. The carpet was stained. The food was poor - but lots of it. (is this a good thing?) The remains of Christmas decorations hung around - a long time after Christmas was a memory. The decor is dire - why a relatively modern hotel has a restaurant that is styled in a bizarre Titanic going down meets the Basingstoke Harvester is beyond me. (With hideous modern 'art' thrown into the mix.) The staff seemed ok. The bed linen wasn't ironed (at least I hope that was the case). If you are on a pre booked coach tour then it's probably bearable for one night . If you have low expectations of a hotel then this will suit admirably. The management need to look with a visitor's eyes.
Dreadful service and food.

We stayed at Durrant House as part of a Trafalger bus tour tjhrough Devon and Cornwall. The place was quite homely and spacious,and there were nice views overlooking the township. However, we were shocked by the abysmal and outright rudeness of the majority staff over drinks and dinner, and the food quality was terrible. The breakfast the following morning was little better. The room was comfortable and spacious, but the bed linen was nort especially clean, and the bed itself was 'ordinary'. The faces of the waiters and bar staff are etched in our mind for the wrong reason.
