Exceptional
4 star hotel with 5 star view and service. Book your sea view room well in advance. Leisure facilities excellent, restaurant and lounge top class. Staff very friendly and helpful. Food exceptional - flavours, presentation and quality far superior to any other hotel I have stayed in. A pure delight for young and old to experience; a truly wonderful family holiday. A flagship hotel in every sense.
Fantastic As Ever
Excellant as ever! Great to see the same faces that have been there for years, i.e Andy behind the bar, Mr Brend the perfect host in keeping with tradition and Jo in reception who is always polite and lovely. Sad to hear that the previous doorman tragically died recently, our condolensces to his family & the hotel. The food was as delicious as always. Love the menu in the terrace lounge for fish dishes. Will always consider Saunton to be my favourite UK hotel, thank you for looking after us. Viewing highlight of the week were the harrier... more
Been going for the past 20 years and will go for another 20 years !!!
We have visited this Hotel for the last 20 years averaging 5 weeks per year and have had superb times on every occasion. The views are wonderful, the management and colleges are friendly and extremely co-operative. Can not speak highly enough of Mr Brend and the family and look forwards to many more happy years ahead at the Saunton Sands Hotel. Our deluxe room with fantastic sea views is something you struggle to get else where in the world. The rooms are of a high standard, with many amenities within. The restaurant serves up an array... more
LIving off past glories
We have stayed at the Saunton Sands numerous times over the last 10 years and on each occasion came away feeling throughly relaxed and looking forward to our next visit. We last visited the hotel in November 2006 and since our previous visit the hotel had, in our view, gone down hill. Reception staff were scruffy (although they were quite helpful) Doormen were unhelpful (the previous doormen who always had time for a chat and for whom nothing was too much trouble have I think, retired) The food was, in our view, just... more
Dreadful, dreadful,dreadful
I was left dumstruck by the appalling customer service in this hotel. Mr Brend needs to retrain his staff URGENTLY. Do NOT use this hotel unless you want to be reminded of Fawlty Towers. The highlight of the whole sorry stay was half way through my shower for the water to stop completely! On requesting a dressing gown to walk up the corridor to use another bathroom I was told by an officious little girl on reception that that would cost me an extra £5! The bill was completely wrong. If you want a real laugh however sit... more
Worth a short stay for the view alone
Little about this hotel is 4 star - so much is 5 star, so much is 3 or 2 star, but worth a night just for the view at any time of year, the magnificent public rooms, the service at dinner - (5 star, pity the food doesn't match). Didn't expect our morning paper to be added to the bill when spending £200+ for half board plus drinks and wine.
Disappointing this time
My wife and I have been staying at Brend group hotels (of which this is one) for fifteen years, and have always been real fans of their product and have recommended to many others. On this last stay at the Saunton Sands we were badly let down, and left feeling disinclined to stay at any Brend hotels in the future. It's basically a great hotel (traditional, but kept up to date with various refurbishments). The location, overlooking the expanse of Saunton Sands and the sea, is spectacular. And our room was large, comfortable and... more
Awful, from start to finish
If you have ever seen "Fawlty Towers", you will know what to expect from this depressing -and expensive - old hotel, a remnant from a bygone era when most Britons holidayed at home. Room are dated, smelly (carpets in the bathrooms!), and uncomfortable. If you go in the summer, you will be over-run by screaming children and tacky cabaret-style entertainment. There are two pools, one outside one in, but both are usually taken over by noisy families. We found staff to be surly at best. Breakfast was the only highlight of our stay here... more
Avoid at any rate!
The overall experience was absolutely terrible. Rooms are extremely dated and basically not 4 stars (neither 3 or 2 actually!). the first room we were shown was actaully an horrible 2 bedrooms flat in an independent building sitting between the main raod and the car park. After we complained, we were shown a tiny room still facing the car park in the main building. The bed was in line with the decoration: from the 70's! Reception was terrible. Nobody to take you to your room: you can carry your luggage alone under the rain outside on... more
Enjoy a great Christmas time at the Sands!
My wife and I take advantage of the hotel's Christmas parties and stay at the Saunton Sands Hotel every year. Christmas time in the hotel is celebrated well - the decor is excellent, there are animated dolls singing carols in the foyer, santa asleep in his house in the dining area and so on. There is usually a disco or singer for entertainment. We have been staying at the hotel for the past three years and will continue to do so over the coming years. "Steven" who organises the parties and rooms is exceptional. Nothing is ever too much... more
