Jun 2011, chuckles

We have just spent 4 nights at this hotel and it was lovely, the breakfast's were well prepared and fresh, our room was a bit old fashioned with the furniture but it was in keeping with the hotel's age and it was clean, didn't dine there in the evenings but we found a great... more

It's really not that bad! Honest!
Ive stayed here twice now and the reviews are very off putting but if you go there thinking the worse you'll be plesantly surprised. We stayed here for 4 nights at the beginning of July 2006. Had a room overlooking the front which was a mistake as it does get noisy in Newquay at night. We had a seaview last time we came and wished we had this time as it was so much nicer. My only real gripe was the bathroom which being carpeted was'nt very hygenic and it has a damp feel and smell to it. Apart from this the service was great and breakfast was yummy! The seaview from the dining room was gorgeous. We paid £75 a night for the room which isnt bad and lets be honest there aren't many great hotels in Newquay especially with this great city centre location.
Did the job......
Me and my partner stayed here last year. We didnt book in advance and spend a couple of hours looking for somewhere to stay, and this was the best we could find. The room was small and dated but it did the job. We normally stay in 4 or 5 star places so this was a bit of a shock to the system. The bed was hard and not very comfortable. We enjoed our stay though, purely because we went to Newquay to have a good time and we didnt spend much time in the room! We were there for a few nights but didnt eat there, we wanted to try out the other places in town. We never made it down in time for breakfast but we did order room service one morning, just tea and toast and some ceral but this took a long time to arrive. As we both work in the hotel industry we didnt mind the wait as we understand that there are busy times in the morning! I would go back again but not for a special occasion, its just a bed thats all!
great hotel
this is a stunning hotel, the rooms were good, the staff were great and all very helpful, the food was also very good. Facilities were great and the atmosphere was very relaxed. We spent a very romantic 4 nights with a great mexican restaurant and nightclub. I expected the nightclub noise to affect the hotel and was surprised to see that it didnt even though we had a room on that side. All in all a great holiday and would recommed to all!!!!!
very recommendable
me and my partner came to stay for 5 nites, the room was great,we had a seaview, the staff was great and so quite for all the nitelife that goes on,anyone looking to go to newquay,i would highly recommend you stay at hotel victoria
romantic retreat
amazing from the minute we arrived, girls on reception really helpful and polite really put us at ease. Our room was romantic with fantastic views. Our valentines dinner was exceptional with great service. All staff went out of their way to exceed our expectations. Would defenetly give this hotel 10 out of 10. look forward to our return visit.
The worst weekend away
A romantic weekend away at the "top" hotel was a disgrace. The so called luxury room was small, the ensuite bathroom was bigger. The bedsheets had cigarette burns, the shower head didn't fit into the holder and as a result you had to hold the head as you showered, there was hair in the bath and bronser pearls on the bathroom floor. The dining waitress was rude and abrupt and refused to even allow us to move a chair at the table to get a better view of the sea, despite it not being in anyones way. When asked why we were told "because it has to stay where it has been put"! Following breakfast I became very ill and was continually sick for the rest of the night - my partner and I ate exactly the same things that day except for the breakfast so we made our own judgements as to why i became ill. We got the general impression that as students our money wasn't quite as welcome as other more wealthy guests which was offensive. The only good thing about the place was the jacuzzi and swimming pool, but for the price we paid I would've preferred to visit the local leisure centre pool!
Beware
Stayed here this week, booked same day and told only economy rooms left. I asked why they were economy rooms and told "they are just like all our rooms but over the nightclub, the nightclub is closed so will not be a problem". If this is what all of the rooms are like, I will not be returning. The carpet was stained, the wallpaper was woodchip painted yellow and was not new. The bathroom walls were plasterboard that looked like a DIY job. Also, I arrived at the hotel at about 3:00 pm, on the way to the room I passed an empty beer glass on a sideboard and an empty bottle of bud with 2 sets of cutlery next to it, still there when went out at 4, still there when returned at 6, still there when went out at 7, still there when returned at 11, stll there when went for breakfast at 8:15, still there when returned from breakfast at 9:00, still there when checked out at 9:15, surely a member of staff would walk around the hotel at some time. Only plus points, receptionists very attractive and waitresses at breakfast friendly and helpful.
Fab hotel
Fab hotel - great location. Close to all ameneties - shops, restaurants, pubs. Half price entrane to club next door and discount at mexican restaurant. Room was lovely - didnt make it to breakfast so can't comment on that. Staff great and opened bar for us after normal closing time. It is a little pricey but well worth it if you want a little luxury in the heart of newquay.
Relieved
We booked three nights for the beginning of half term week. My heart sank when we read the reviews on this site and we nearly cancelled. However the offered rate was really good value so we persisted. The room was excellent, sea view on the third floor, room clean and recently decorated. The staff were polite and helpful. I doubt very much that I would go to Newquay again and here I have to agree with other correspondents. But this is not the hotel's fault. Parking can be a bit tricky and routes out of town are complicated. Breakfast was freshly cooked and dinner was not at all bad. The town offers a contemporary Indian cuisine restaurant and there is an Italian place quite near to the hotel. I have stayed in more expensive and less attractive hotels on the Eastbourne promenade. If only the Victoria were somewhere else!
Has good and bad points
Booked double room on the phone. Turned up and allocated a room over the nightclub. Great view of the sea, good quality sound system pumping through the floorboards. Asked to be moved. No double rooms. Got a single room which was ok. Went back the next day and asked for a double room. "Why, certainly sir, I don't know why you weren't given one yesterday!". Got an absolutely fantastic corner room with a view of the sea and sunset, nice and quiet, recently renovated. Breakfast was okay and freshly cooked rather than buffet style. Jacuzzi was off for the duration with no explanation why. Swimming pool was good, as was sauna and fitness room. So, as long as you don't get the (-) on reception, and get a room away from the nightclub (you want the west/south end), you'll be ok.
