We would have been better staying at home in Switzerland. Of course we enjoyed the fantastic view and the friendly staff - our room overlooked the sea (it also overlooked a filthy restaurant roof, littered with cigarette butts!) The noise and the smell coming from the... more

The Glendorgal is hideously overpriced and offers basic Travel Inn style accommodation at prices which should be reserved for genuinely luxurious hotels. It is very restrictive in terms of breakfast choice, room facilities, pool opening times and breakfast serving times... more

Don't do it
Just a short note to say if you are thinking of staying at this "Hotel" treat it like no other. Having stayed at my fair share of Hotels the World over I was amazed at the attitude of certain "high" level staff members, not what you would expect from someone in the "service" business. Normally when you stay at a Hotel the staff are only to pleased to assist you, after all surely that's what you are paying for? In short I would say that with a change of management and a general tidy up of the hotel and a joining houses/accommodation this "Hotel" could be very good however I fear that this may take some time, as it seems they are unable to see the error of their ways.
An Oasis in Cornwall
We visited this hotel last week and have been a number of times previously over the past year or so and have enjoyed each of our stays. There was a bit of upheaval when they had their refurbishment, but they were as accommodating as possible throughout which encouraged us to re-vist, which i am glad we did. The rooms have been refurbished in a classic beach style which is attractive and relaxing. The staff are polite and friendly, as always and the restaurant efficient at most times (even though they were generally extremly busy, a good sign i thought!). Overall, for what you pay to stay here, this hotel is ideal for the location it is in as it stands aside from the normal 'Newquay B&B'. It has everything you could possibly need on site (Bar, Restarant & Health Spa) and has the extra bonus of an Ocean View and being close enough to the town centre (but not too close tho!). There has only been small problems with this hotel that i feel must have been ammended with the refurbishment as off the top of my head, i can't think of them and i certainly will be recomending this hotel to my friends and family.
Never stay here
Unacceptably poor. There is something seriously wrong at this hotel. Our stay in May 2006 was ruined by a combination of ignorant management and shoddy accomodation. You will rarely see the same person at reception and the constant complaints that seem to be going on all day at reception are dealt with by blamimg other members of staff or on one occassion by blaming other guests!! NEVER consider getting married here. Also the prices will vary violently from what you have been quoted at the booking stage. When the manageress finally lowered herself to see me in person she was confrontational, aggressive and rude to me and my wife in front of our young children. The excuses were endless and bordering on downright lies. Under staffed, over priced. The management itself is enough to warrant not staying here whereas the accomodation does not live up to expectations. It is very poorly maintained, and appears unfinished within the rooms. Looks nice on the outside but once you're inside beware.
Gorgeous Hotel
I really dont see what all the bad fuss is about this hotel. My partner and I stayed here in September 2006 and it is the most gorgeous hotel in Newquay. I do agree that the carpets in the room are very painful on the feet but i just wore socks and was fine. My only other complaint was the distance away from the main town centre but exercise did me good! The food was lovely and the service good but not intruding. The room was clean and very well furnished. I would definately stay at this hotel again and would highly recommend it.
smelt of sick
went on holiday in september, the room smelt of sick but was clean. a dog that was owned by an employee of the hotel barked at me as well.
Nice location, horrible hotel
Found this website recently, hence the "late" review. Please read the reviews previously posted. All the negatives would just be repeated in this review. We took advantage of a "summer special" deal & given a room facing the car park (on the 1st floor).I bought my own disinfecting cleaner for the bathroom (but to be fair, most of the hotels we've stayed at here in England could use a bleach cleanser in their bathrooms). We had nice waitresses, but their boss (a very pompous, unpleasant older blonde woman) seemed to dampen the relaxed atmosphere in the restaurant.Too bad about this terrible hotel...it's in a beautiful location.
Excellent - no complaints from us!
We arrived late at the hotel and was greeted warmly, told that we were expected for dinner and could we please go to the restaurant quickly as they chef stopped cooking at 930pm. Fair enough. Dropped luggage into our room which was lovely. Good size, lots of storage, great bathroom (one of the best I've seen and I've stayed in a lot of hotels). Yes the carpet is hard on the feet but its a durable carpet and I can understand why it's been laid. Bed was comfortable (pillows perhaps a little too soft) but good enough. View from balcony wonderful (saw rainbow following morning). We were treated wonderfully by the staff in the restaurant, the food was superb and I would highly recommend you visit for a meal if nothing else. It was all freshly cooked food and could not be faulted -we bought the chef and waiter a drink when they finished because we were so impressed. We missed breakfast next morning (overslept!) but we were catered for despite this in a polite and helpful way. I cannot fault the staff in this hotel. Overall I would highly recommend this hotel and we plan to return. However we stayed out of season (November) so maybe in the summer months it is busier hence more problems may arise. I'd say take a chance and go there - you may even enjoy it!
Best Hotel in Newquay
We arrived in Newquay around 10pm, desperate to find a decent place to spend the night. Having never been there before, we didn't know what we'd find. But we wanted something clean, comfortable, quiet, and with a nice atmosphere at an affordable price. We would stay 3 nights. After 30 minutes of driving through town we were more than dismayed. Every hotel we saw was either older than the roman colloseum, dirty, loud, shoddy, or questionable. When we thought we were in luck with the Best Western, we found it a little pricey, so we agreed to keep looking, and if we found nothing else, to stay there. Wandering around some road I spotted a nice looking white sign, low to the ground, which said Glendorgal. I told my husband to "follow that sign!" When we arrived on the scene, we were Amazed! When I was waiting for my husband to bring back the news of the price, I didn't expect good news -- but it was great! It was an incredibly decent price! (perhaps for its past bad experiences?). We couldn't have been happier. Our stay was very pleasant. We had Morton Browne bath products in our room, posh bathroom fittings, and a sweetly pleasant room decor - every room in the hotel had a name! We were "tidewater" :-) Others were "seaspray", etc. Nice neutral tones and comfortable bedding.. we were happy. Ocean breeze, beautiful view, peaceful surroundings -- Thank goodness we didn't stop at the Best Western (in the middle of town!)
Never ever again
I spent 6 nights at this hotel in September with my boyfriend and was hoping to at least 'get what i paid for'. The list of complaints/problems i experienced with this hotel is as follows (in no particular order): 1. The towels are NOT white and fluffy as advertised. This was a real disappointment as after a long walk on the beach in the wind and rain, the nicest feeling is wrapping yourself up in a big fluffy towel after a hot shower/bath. The towels were also rather small and in our room we were given 2 'bath' towels and 2 hand. The bath towels were the same size of my hand towels at home. 2. Staff are exceptionally surly and unhelpful. I had to ask for extra towels each day as 2 pathetic little thin things were not sufficient for a shower in the morning and then a wash at night. I founf it very difficult to obtain extra towels and the staff made me feel as though they were doing me a massive favour. If they hadnt advertised the towels as a positive thing, i would have brought my own and never bothered about it. I was also accused by one member of staff of taking the hotel towels into the Health Club. I wasnt pleased with this as i had brought beach towels with me for this purpose. 3. The 8am-4pm restrictions on the health club are not great as you need to be in breakfast by 9.30 and unless you want to get up super early on holiday or be back from your day out early, there isnt much point in using the facilities. The pool was broken for one day and the spa for 2 days. 3. You will be charged £1.60 for a diet coke and £1.50 for a coke in the restaurant. I did ask for an explanation but told that "odd things happen in this hotel" 4. The Molton Brown products are nailed to the wall. Not a real problem but not what you expect 5. Be warned about the carpet and bring some extra thick socks for use in the room. It is so hard wearing it removes the skin from your feet. 6. Our TV was broken and we had to ask for 2 days running to get a replacement. 7. The room key was a mission to get into the lock and took about 5 minutes to get into and out of the room 8. OUr bed linen was not changed for 4 nights and even then i had to ask for it to be changed. WHen clean sheets were brought to the room they were just handed to me and i was forced to change the bed myself! Absolutely unheard of and i have travelled alot. You would receive better service in a hostel 9. Housekeeping regularly dumped clean towels outside the door on the floor and never came into the room 10. The wardrobe was tiny and had 3 hangers so not worth unpacking at all. There were no shelves so nowhere to put anything. 11. Breakfast options were far too over ambitious and would have been far better if simplified. Overall we had a lovely holiday but we were forced to spend as little time as possible in the hotel so this helped. I can honestly say i have never felt the need to complain about a hotel before and we will not be returning. For £45pppn i'd rather eat my feet.
Nice evening meal..pity about the rest being terrible
Before I start this review I must state that I have never felt the need to make any negative comments about a hotel in my life - until now. We stayed at the Watermark with friends for our wedding aniversary on 4th September 2005 On arrival the view and location were superb, on stepping inside the trouble started. The reception staff were totally uninterested in us and as we made our way to our rooms the temperature in the corridors was unbearably hot for reasons not known. We arrived at our friends room first and found it was in fact what appeared to be a small cupboard mascarading as a hotel room. A trip to reception later and a full size room was avaliable after several of the staff had blamed others in front of us for our friends being given one of the smaller rooms by mistake. Our room appeared fine although the floor went noticeably uphill. After a few minutes it became apparent that the fit and finish in the room was very poor despite the hotel being recently refurbished. The floor creaked no matter where you stood. I could hear creaking constantly from adjoining rooms and the corridoors, so ours was clearly not the exception. The room was unbearably hot and smelt of vomit although the heating was not on and it was cool and raining outside. Shoes had to be worn when walking on the carpet which was similar to 60 grit sandpaper and was actually painfull with bare feet!! The carpet also had a very large stain (2x3 feet) My wife and I thought this may be where the hotel got its name - Watermark The evening meal was surprisingly very nice and the restaurant was busy with many non residents, though the miserable staff and their attitude that we were nothing more than an inconvience was very annoying. After a sweaty night in our sauna hot room we were woken at about 0530 with a huge amount of creaking and banging from staff going about their business, this went on for about 30 minutes. In the bathroom the fluffy white towels as adverstised were white but definately not fluffy any more and the door lock kept falling off. Breakfast was okay but the service was again very poor and staff silent and miserable. Common courtesy and manners would have been nice!! Each time I passed reception other guests were making various compalints and could be heard being met with the same abrupt response that their comments would be passed on to the manager and nothing else could be done at that time. To sum up this could be a fantastic hotel but - I would not stay here again even if paid to do so, to find staff so miserable and rude must have took months of searching.
