More Traveller Reviews of The Metropole Hotel
one of the worst hotels we've ever stayed in.
from qnu
This hotel was extremely overpriced, tatty and disappointing. cracked tiles in bathroom, dirty bath, threadbare carpet, room service breakfast just ok, beds are really small for supposed doubles, wallpaper falling off walls, tv reception rubbish, rooms very small, reception unmanned after 11ish, not a lot of atmosphere, no facilities whatsoever!!! we booked in at 8pm and were charged £170, we don't mind paying for things but even we thought this was extreme. staff are friendly and courteous so this helps. it was just so disapointing thankfully it was really central, so handy to everything but i wouldn't encourage anyone to get excited about staying or expect too much. we're not complainers normally but this was an exception. felt taken advantage off.
Great location, but really old hotel
from Marinushkat
This hotel is located next to the harbour, even though we had windows overlooking the main road. Metropole hotel had a terrible smelt in the corridors, restaurants and rooms- I don't knwo what it was- either the acid they treat their old carpets, or just simply dust, but it was unbearable. We were even scared to eat or drink on their restaurant, because of fear of unhygiene! The lift is very small and very old, so we didn;t use it, the staircase was ok. They are renovating upper floor of the building, and we were lucky to get a room there. So our room was clean, new and fresh. I am terriefied to think what are the old rooms look like! There was a wedding also in the evening in the restaurant of this hotel- I don't know how did they manage not to get disgusted by the smelt!
Incredible hotel

Recently refurbished, stunning position in Padstow - great views from the restaurant and mosot of the bedrooms. Rooms extremely spacious and really nicely decorated. Staff professional and helpful. Hotel feels very grand and yet isn't huge, so it feels very personal. Ate in the restuarant one evening and although not cheap, the food was delicious and I reckon beats Stein's restaurant any day! I would thoroughly recommend staying here - I know we'll be back!
Wow, more to this place than meets the eye.

My expectations were average and what a change it was to be more than pleasantly surprised. The welcome was friendly and I was given a complimentary upgrade to a sea view twin room that was newly and tastefully decorated. Best of all was dinner. I travel a lot and have eaten some atrociously rated meals in some hotels but this one gave them all a sock in the eye. It was simply delicious. Not too much, not too little and perfectly flavoured and for the first time in a long time I didn't even contemplate picking up the salt or pepper! Not only that, I choose a vegetarian main course and didn't miss meat at all. I've eaten in RIck Stein's on past occasions and really, for the money, I think I would prefer to visit the Metropole. Breakfast was great too - cooked to order and piping hot when it arrived. Well done and thank you for a most pleasant stay. I'll be back!
Fantastic location, and friendly staff

I was treated to a weekend in Padstow to learn to cook fish at Rick Steins seafood school, which was fantastic in itself, but the accommodation at the Hotel Metropole was fabulous in its own right. We had a slight mix up with the room to start with. We had reserved a sea view room but it was a twin, so they swapped us to room 36 which has been recently refurbished, but overlooks the back of the hotel. The room more than made up for the lack of view. If this is the standard of renovation that the Metropole are undertaking on all their rooms, then it will all be stunning. We only ate breakfast at the hotel, but the view was amazing and the choice and quality on offer was superb. The staff were all very friendly and helpful, but you could say that for all the locals. A good choice to make if you want a lovely weekend in Cornwall. I cannot fault it at all.
food, amazing!!!

We stayed at the hotel in dec'06. The hotel was good, we had a new room, a premier room which we were upgraded to, free of charge. The food in the restaurant was amazing, a good selection on the menu. we ate in the restaurant everynight of our 4night stay, the menu was different everynight. It looked and tasted wonderful, a definate must for anyone going th cornwall
Typical British seaside hotel

My wife and I are just back from a three-day winter break at the Metrople. The hotel is in the throws of refurbishment, so externally it is a bit of a building site. The management have done there best to keep the building works separate from the residents, but you do find an occasional overlap occur. The staff are generally very pleasant and helpfull, though in many cases English is not their first language. We asked for on of the new refurbished rooms, which was very nice with king-sized comfortable bed .Alas the central heating did not work and we had an electric convector fire in the room, though this proved to be an advantage when the hotels boilers failed on the Saturday night (so no hot water or C.H in the hotel) and they had to get an engineer for Torquay to repair it. We cannot recommend the room we used (room19) as it is above the staff room downstairs and we were woken at 6.30 am by various banging noises and loud talking emanating up through the floor. The wind also whips past the fire escape so lying in bed sounds rather like rounding Cape Horn in a storm. The hotels public rooms are frankly past their sell by date, and in need of attention, though comfortable. The restaurant is excellent ( the best thing about the hotel) with a view over the harbour, but beware the 12.5% service charge which was not mentioned at the time of booking, also the wine is expensive and in my opinion not particularly good value. As a low season break our stay at the Metropole was great, but I would not be so happy at mid or high season charges. If this hotel were not in Padstow I doubt they would be able to get away with it.
Awful
from TRAVELLER-1989
Well what can i say! this hotel was simple awful. The hotel is in a great location, and has a great view, but after this there is little to be happy about. The hotel is in need of a major refurb. Some rooms have been upgraded, but even these are well below normal standards! The bathrooms were the worst part of the stay, they were old, diry and falling apart! there was dust all over the place withh mould coated into the tiles and baths. The rooms smelt musty, and were very dark and dingy! one tip if u want any decent room in this hotel then book 109 and 108, these are large rooms with a sofa area and dining table, but they are the newest and the cleanest. they also have seperate showers and the best views. Rooms 30-40 are simple awful the oldest and dirtyest of the lot, and for £150 a night , i expected so much more.
Fantastic!

We stayed at this hotel for the last night of our 9 night tour of Cornwall, and what a fantastic end to our holiday! We stayed in one of the 'new' rooms (36) and while the view was towards the back/side of the building, the room itself was fabulous and gleaming. We ate in the restaurant and had one of the best meals ever, it deserves its AA rosettes and should easily have a Michelin star. The view from the restaurant was breathtaking Staff were polite and really helpful, breakfast was delicious. A brilliant hill top location, just a short stroll from all the action Thoroughly recommended, ask for a new room! and forget any of the restaurants in town, the hotel restaurant can surely not be beaten
Fawlty Towers is alive and well in Padstow

Over priced, shabby, grubby and a miserable place to stay in such a beautiful little town. Everything that is wrong with the UK service industry is wrapped up in this failing hotel. Avoid if you can....
Having stayed at the metrolpole before and found the Hotel Staff friendly and helpful, the room spacious and cosy and the food fantastic i am always concerned that they may not be able to live up to the provious high standards - I needn't have been concerned, this visit was... more
