90 minute wait for dinner
2 / 10
Jul 2010, telshirlSouthend

On the first night we booked our evening meal for 8.00pm. Our order was taken at 7.45pm – we then waited, and waited, our starter eventually arrived at 9.35pm! our main course at 10.05pm and our desert at 10.35pm. It was gone 11.00pm before we left the restaurant!
On entering the lounge following the meal it was obvious that the other diners had had the same experience. We spoke to the restaurant manager who stated that such delays were normal for the fine-dining menu.
This is a lovely building in a stunning location with friendly and helpful front of house staff but the dining arrangements need urgent attention since none of the guests we spoke to would consider a Brend Hotel again.
On returning home we wrote to the Director of Brend Hotels (politely) and received a very condescending and dismissive reply which included the statement “this may not be the hotel for you”. Well he is certainly right about that.

To travellers used to four-star 'Hiltons' and 'Intercontinentals' etc this hotel will be quite a let down. There's not much to it. Lounges are small, few leisure facilities, practically no exterior grounds with the very small pool inside the hotel.
The location sounds ideal but it is actually on a busy road opposite a sea wall with concrete steps allowing access to the rocky beach below, but good for a touring base.
The restaurant is pleasant, serving creative fare, but it is 'fussy' food rather than 'gourmet'. 'Pretty' rather than wholesome and appetising. (My wife and I escaped to the local 'Best Western' to find a decent salad meal) It's not 'silver-service, but the young staff provide a posh silver 'plate' service with a 'sorbet' course provided to make it all seem superior.
Rooms are small but well equipped and comfortable, the staff friendly.Just ensure you don't pay too much for what is not REALLY a four-star experience.

A wonderful hotel, overlooking the sea. Quite old-fashioned inside but sentimental to my parents, who were on holiday with us, as they met there nearly 50 years ago.
Lovely indoor swimming pool, with a child pool at one end. Cornwall is always lovely and we had a great time.
The only downside to this hotel is the wonderful food - I have put on 9lbs in a week!!
