Excellent
Stayed at the Copthorne 2 nights at the weekend.Rooms very comfortable and spotless.Staff excellent and very helpful.Wonderful selection for breakfast. All in all very impressed would definately stay there again
Very tired hotel overdue an update
I have stayed in this hotel about 6 times during the last three years. As has been previously reported this is a tired hotel and the rooms are very jaded and worn around the edges. Dissapointingly rooms come with single beds unlike competitors that offer the solo traveller doubles, not great if you want to stretch out. The evening meals have always been great, well cooked and served with a smile. A shame about the breakfasts and like others have said, the scrambled eggs are definately powdered egg, there is no need for that in a... more
Tired Hotel in a handy location
Stayed here on a recent trip to Plymouth and things did not start well when there was a mistake with checking in. When this was finally rectified it took sooooo long to check in....This said the staff were a little embarrassed and were friendly and very helpful. The room I had was a twin with tiny single beds and very noisy heating... I was moved to a Double Bed room which was more suited to an adult. The room had all the basics you need but was tired and in need of some refurbishment ..... and soon. The hotel is situated... more
Better than I expected
Having lived in Plymouth for 8 years and walked past this hotel very often, I found myself wondering several times wether or not to try it out. My curiosity got the better of me in December, so I took the plunge. Well, despite the hotel's dire exterior appearance (anyone heard of 'paint job'?!!), and the fact the hotel was once pretty nice with pool etc, I actually liked the place. Staff were very professional and couteous, rooms were average in size but - considering the dated decor - very clean and looked after, everything worked... more
Check for breakfat reduced rates at weekends before buying vouchers
The breakfast vouchers offered when not included in the rate are non-refundable. Sadly my wife and I found this out after purchasing two of them on check in (£20) only to wake up and find a weekend offer of breakfast at £6.50 each was available. Petty as this might sound, despite being told by both reception & at the restaurant we would receive a refund we were unable to do so on checking out, leaving a very bitter taste in my mouth. It was a shame as the hotel was fine other than in this respect.
Very pleasant stay
My son and myself have just spent 1 night at the copthorne and i must say i was impressed with the standard of service, the rooms were rather on the poky side as others have described but everything we needed was at hand, room was very clean and the decor was modern. I liked the arrangement for breakfast, very relaxed and not hurried, food was lovely and the £10 a head price was very reasonable for this grade of hotel, will definately be visiting again.
1970's timewarp
The Plymouth Copthorne was probably very fancy in the 1970's but it hasn't really changed much since. There's no health club or pool. The rooms are small and a bit shabby. There's no air conditioning - it must get unbearable in summer. The front of the hotel overlooks a busy road which is noisy even through thick double glazing. Internet access is available for £8 an hour - shocking for a business hotel. They messed up my reservation and tried to overcharge on checkout (but they did fix both problems very quickly with no hassle).
Management response from Copthorne_Manager

We are sorry to hear that our hotel did not match your expectations on several counts and we would like to inform you of some changes that we propose to make. The hotel was built in 1987 so doesn't quite date back to the 70's but we appreciate that an update is due and we are currently waiting for this to be signed off by head office. We also have plans to build a gym and swimming pool as we know that these facilities are important to our guests. We do see ourselves as a business hotel as well as leisure and for this reason Internet access is free of charge in our Connoisseur rooms. We do hope that you will come back to see some of the changes in due course which will hopefully ensure that next time your stay is a more positive one.

Beware the scrambled egg !!!
This was my second stay at the Copthorne, I was looking forward to the use of a swimming pool but that had been closed since my last visit - never mind !! My party of 4 had reason to complain to the management about the standard of the breakfast on our first morning of 3. The bacon appeared to have been boiled and was cold. Baked beans were cold, potato waffles undercooked, tomatoes burnt - but the worst was the taste of the scrambled egg. It was almost indescribable ! something between fishy and dead, completely inedible. On... more
Management response from Copthorne_Manager

We would like to thank you for being a return visitor to our hotel and are always interested in customer feedback. We appreciate that the swimming pool and gym facilities are important to our guests and hope to re-launch this area once we get the sign off from our head office. With regard to your concern about the scrambled egg, our supervisor was in fact incorrect, it is not powdered eggs that we use, it’s pasteurised eggs and you will find that most hotels in the UK use this too. We will reiterate this to our staff for future reference. We are sorry that you found the breakfast unsatisfactory, most of our feedback is very good, but we will take your complaints on board and ensure that standards are maintained. We do hope that you will be back in the future and enjoy a better experience with us.

What a tired hotel!
We had a two night stay at this hotel and upgraded our room paying extra. Not sure why we bothered, the room was so small and dark and there was no air conditioning so the room was so hot we were unable to sleep. It's somewhat in a 1960's timewarp with decoration and the towels although clean were very worn. The bathroom was very dark with only one dim light. We did try to have a coffee around 4pm in the bar area only to be informed that we couldn't as there was a wedding using the facility! Not one I'd ever visit again!
Management response from Copthorne_Manager

We regret that your experience at the Copthorne Plymouth was disappointing for a number of reasons. The hotel was actually built in 1987 but we do appreciate that an update is due and we are currently awaiting approval from our head office to commence refurbishment of the bedrooms. The bar is open to guests regardless of functions we have running, so this was unfortunate and we apologise for the inconvenience. We do hope that you will come back and stay with us in the future and have a better experience as a result.
