Excellent countryside Hotel with friendly staff and excellent facilities. I stayed there previously and the standards have been maintained. On the outskirts of Plymouth and on the edge of the Moors. The food is super and so is the scenery around the Hotel. Best to book in... more

A little gem - and the food is amazing!
My partner and I spent 5 nights at the Moorland and loved it. Ok, so it is out on the edge of Dartmoor so it's not the easiest to find, but it was no problem following the directions on the hotel website. The steakhouse at the hotel is brilliant (steaks as well as game, including kangaroo, ostrich and venison!) but if staying over a weekend make sure you book as we missed out on our final night as it was a Saturday and packed with diners. The hotel itself is on Dartmoor and in a gorgeous location near the lovely little village of Shaugh Prior, watch out for the ponies and sheep on the road! The view from the hotel is amazing too, but only about 20 minutes drive from the centre of Plymouth so it's also handy for exploring further afield. The only issues we had were that the shower wasn't great, not much power in it at all, and the bedroom doors required a bit of effort to close. We were woken up very early some morning by the very early risers attempting to close their doors to go for breakfast (which is great by the way). The walls are also a bit thin, I heard a few people snoring through the walls during the night! Nothing too bad though. The staff are amazing, really friendly and happy to chat as well as helping with anything you may have a problem with. I couldn't recommend them enough. All in all, a wonderful little hotel - I hope to go back as soon as I can!
A Little gem
We have just returned from a short break at the Moorland hotel and although the room was a little bit dated you cannot fault the friendliness of all the staff especially Patricia , who co-owns the hotel, who even rang earlier in the week to ask if we wanted to book a table in the restaurant as she did not want us to be disappointed as they had 2 large parties in on the saturday night! You certainly got the impression that nothing was too much trouble and we definitely will be returning soon. Beautiful views from our 2nd floor bedroom and a very good location for exploring Dartmoor.
wounerfull and warm
the food was amazing the chef is worth his weight in gold!! the people are so nice and make you feal welcome. the apperance is wounderfull and tastfully decorated threw out with a modern feal but warm and cosy. location is lovely the waterfall close by was lovely to visit.we will visit again x thank you moorland for our romantic stay donna and shaun hunt
Very nice little hotel
The hotel is in the middle of nowhere and would have been very hard to find had it not have been for my sat nav. I agree with reviews I have read about the hotels sign needing better lighting. It is down some very narrow country lanes and in some places there are sheep just walking around…which was nice but scary if your not use to driving in the country side. Our room definitely needed modernising but was massive in size which was very nice as I was expecting a tiny little room. The mattress was terrible in our room but we were so shattered from the drive that it didn’t matter. We stayed on the top floor in room 15 and the view was lovely. We didn’t seem to have anyone on our floor the two nights we stayed…or if we didn’t we didn’t here or see them. The food was excellent in the Steakhouse. The first night we got there we went straight down to eat. When we got the menu I was slightly concerned being a vegetarian that there was nothing but steak on the menu. It does state to ask for a vegetarian menu so I was expecting that the chef was just going to write a list of things he had that he could make. To my surprise they had a proper vegetarian menu and I was pleased by the amount of choice I had. Only disappointment i had with the restaurant was the fact that we weren’t told we would need to make reservations for the restaurant the next day and couldn’t get a table till 9pm. Breakfast was excellent as well. The waitress that worked on the Friday was much friendly then the one that worked on Saturday...she really didn’t want to be there. I thought the hotel was excellent for the price we paid. Don’t expect luxury rooms, but if you just need to stay a few nights for work or to see family I would highly recommended it. Unfortunately we were there for a family funeral so I can’t advise on any activities or the local area. This hotel really is in the middle of nowhere so don’t stay here if you don’t want to be in the countryside.
Good value
We've stayed at the Moorland several times and I have known it for many years through various vicissitudes - Sep 2006 the most recent visit, find it useful as a stopping-off point for trips to Cornwall but it is also a good base for Dartmoor, good views, good value, clean comfortable large rooms, friendly staff and good evening meals. Decoration has been in progress every time we've been. Some rough edges but I don't see how you can complain at that price.
It's just a great little hotel.
My wife and I have now stayed at the Moorland on 3 occasions. Why? because it is a well run, friendly hotel that still has some character. If you need to be 'away from it all', then this is a great place to be and Rosemary, the owner was always there for you. Sadly, I believe that she has moved to another hotel but we plan to go down again this year and will see what the new owners are making of it. The views are tremendous, the walks bracing and, at the risk of making my 'magic place' more popular, you must visit Shaugh Bridge, where the rivers Plym and Meavey meet. You are already on the edge of the moors so there are some great walks, drives and rides to be had. I believe there is a local stable as you sometimes see the horses in the paddock attached to the hotel. There are at least 2 golf courses in the area if that's your thing and the Plymouth city centre is about 40 minutes away (traffic willing, of course). The Sheraton it isn't but if you're looking for a friendly, convenient base to explore from, then give it a go.
Not 5 star but more than adequate
If you are looking for a clean room, somewhere to rest your bones after a long day on in the Devon Countryside & you want to be right on the Moors then the Moorland is fine. We found the room to be clean & tidy, en-suite was adequate, towels changed daily & bed made. Excellent full English each morning & friendly staff. The bar area was pretty basic but served our needs, ie, wet the whistle after a long day checking out properties in the Plymouth area. If you do book, please ensure you request NOT to have the room above the snooker room ! We had this one & it was a tad noisy until the youngsters, who were no problem at all, made their way home. Be prepared to pay London prices for your beer or wine, very surprised at that but it was the same in Plymouth in ordinary pubs. Fantastic views over the Moors down into Plymouth when the mist lifts ! Would stay again considering the price. Friendly hotel which does need some TLC but that did not spoil our stay. Stay somewhere else
The place is worn out. The various hallways and stairways were dirty, and unkept, the doors scratched and battered and even the door locks were clearly worn out. The rooms were clean but the minimal furniture was cheap chipboard. It was a cold night but the heating was low and the windows were open on arrival, so the rooms were cold. Just to add to the effect the heating turned off while we were in the bar and a single fan heater was offered for two rooms. I slept under the summer duvet with clothes on and we checked out in the morning. Just to finish the effect we were charged a cancellation fee as we had originally booked for three nights, (partly on the basis of the earlier review, presumably left by the owner of the 'hotel'). We moved upmarket to the YHA at Bellever.
Management response from patriciadallas 27 Jan 2010

Your probably right! The poor old Hotel was in desperate need of love and attention back in 2006. Fortunately, Rosemary and I (Patricia) are up for the challenge. So far so good - but we will never stop striving for better! Thanks for your feedback. It's always appreciated.

loved the moorland hotel!!!
rooms were beautifully decorated, beds comfortable with really nice bedding. tea and coffee in the room an absolute plus with good size mugs and yummy biscuits. view from room was fantastic, staff were helpful and pleasant. breakfast was included and was a good hearty meal well cooked. i will definitely stay again on my next visit to the uk.
