The Star Inn Hotel reviews

The Star is a charming pub, sprawlingly extended. Visitors should be aware that the more expensive accommodation, known as "feature rooms", although historic and interesting, should be avoided in summer as they are very hot and the necessity to open a window means constant... more

Fawlty Star
I wish I had read the reviews before booking into the Star. The food is awful and certainly gave the impression of being mainly bought in ready cooked dishes, how else can ‘pan-fried’ chicken be so tired and dull? Soup was luke warm. The vegetables were uninspired and monotonously the same each day. After a tasteless custard tart and a sugary cream confection we gave up on the desserts altogether for our final two days. Poached egg at breakfast was mysterious, perfectly formed but overcooked (twice), in spite of requesting ‘lightly... more
overpriced star
We had a two day stay, the sevice at the Hotel was very poor , the staff were as miserable as sin. We went out the second evening to Eastbourne , when we arrived back at 10pm the bar was closed, all around us was dark. We opted to go across the road to the Goerge on our return at 11pm we were locked out. The bedroom wasn't what we were expecting (no original features) there was only enough hot water for one shower, after walking 50 miles we would have both liked a shower which gave my man the hump. We wouldn't recommend the Hotel, they... more
A Disappointing Weekend at the Star
We didn't mind that the hotel was undergoing refurbishment as we'd been warned in advance by letter. But, barring one of the breakfast waiters and the female receptionist, what a po faced bunch of staff! On our first night we went down to the bar to have a drink - it was so dark in there we could barely see anything (could've been sorted out by candles on the tables) and the fire was unlit ("our gas supply hasn't arrived - it should be here in half an hour". However, it wasn't lit all evening, although there was a fire in the other... more
Fantastic Weekend at The Star Inn
We recently stayed at The Star Inn and had a delightful weekend, so much so, my husband had to drag me away ! The checkin process was quick and friendly and we asked to change our room to a first floor location, which was not a problem. The room was very clean and spacious and I had two brilliant nights sleep as it was so quiet. Whilst not particularly modern the bathroom was immaculately clean and had a full power shower. Our breakfast was hearty to say the least and I enjoyed beautifully poached eggs on both mornings ! We had... more
Fallen star
We would not recommend this hotel. We were shown to a tired, noisy, bedroom (no 42) and the first alternative (7) was as bad. The cold water in the wash-basin of 41 (our final choice) was intermittent at best. The food at dinner was fine. Food at breakfast was not bad the first day (the second was greasy) but guests in the breakfast room were sharing their feelings of dissatisfaction. Some staff were friendly and helpful but complaints were not handled well. The compulsory additional £1 for a small bottle of water in the room (they will... more
What a state to get to?
We stayed at this hotel recently, the staff all acted as if there dog had just died, and the food was very poor. We originally booked to have evening meals but after the first evening’s offering we changed to B & B. I would suggest that they sack the chief and smile, in that order. The food across the road at the ‘George’ is very good.
Disappointing in every way
Disappointing in every way....most unhelpful and rude staff, expensive but frankly not very nice food which took well over an hour for a cold sandwich. When we dared complain about this we were told we had been before and all we had done was complain ( we had never even set foot in the place if we had we would have known not to go back!) and that we would not be welcome to come again. We did not need to be told that, as quite honestly if someone offered me a free stay there and a free meal i would have to decline it...would not recommend... more
Management response from ManagerAlfriston

I am sorry to read that you meals were not up to the usually high standards of The Star. Whilst every effort is made to ensure that all meals leave our kitchen to the most consistent standard, on this occaision those standards were not met. Please accept my apologies for the problems you have described. The majority of all foodstuffs at the hotel are locally sourced, from farms and other small businesses within East Sussex. The Star prides itself on producing fresh daily food for both hotel residents and non-residents, often receiving positive feedback. Despite this, I am pleased that you felt the service level was good. Finally, thank you for supplying this feedback, which will be useful in helping us to change and improve for the future.

Truly awful
We were really looking forward to a night at a lovely walkers pub (like we've done in the Yorkshire Dales and Derbyshire) and were so disappointed. Our welcome was extremely 'cool' and overall the staff were surly. The room was clean but very tired. The restaurant manager was extremely odd and the food was disgraceful. Many of the menu options were at a supplement to the fixed price. All main courses (except that with a supplement) contained cream or milk so they agreed to make a risotto without. It was best described as gruel... more
Getting a bit tired
We got this place using last minute.com as it was all that we could find in the area - we specifically wanted to be near the 'long man' carved into the downes. Have to say its looking past its best, and for the price you would expect more. The location alone is not enough to justify the £90 a night (B&B) fee we paid. The rooms are starting to look tired, wall paper beginning to curl up at the edges, and the entire place feels very dated - patterned carpet throughout, floorboards creaking badly outside the rooms, and thin walls between... more
The (Fading) Star Inn
Having stayed in old inns elsewhere in the country, we were looking forward to visiting this one. However, the experience did not quite live up to expectation, especially given the price. The hotel's main appeal was from the historical aspect, which you got a good sense of sitting in the hotel bar. We had a room in the annex which was reasonably spacious and comfortable, although we weren't the only ones complaining about the soft bed. We'd booked halfboard and the main let down was the restaurant with its overpriced wine list and poor... more
