Simple, clean linen, comfortable bed, no hot water or parking

Sep 2009, judest

The staff are very friendly & helpful so I really didn't bother with any complaints since I was staying one night only. I had a nice view from the window and so this was a nice surprise but for £85 a night incl Breakfast there's got to be something good because parking certainly wasn't a plus point. I wanted to park outside the hotel however all the available spaces had cones in them and so I assumed that I could not park there. This was not the case much to my annoyance though. It really wasn't a question of being lazy as the nearest carpark was the Regency Square one taken over by the council, reclaimed from NCP. It costs about £12 for 24 hours and I think the hotel charges approx £15. It took me an extra half an hour on my 2 hour journey just to wait for a space to free up and a transit van full of men were cheering once they'd finally got into the car-park. So I had to unload all the luggage and walk to the hotel, not easy when the spaces in the car-park are so narrow and you have a people carrier parked next to you, even in a polo. There was hot water for a shower in the evening but in the morning it was tepid and I decided I wouldn't bother washing my hair just get in and out of it as quickly as possible. I was woken up by noisy guests at 1:30am and then again an hour later not just because the walls are really thin but because someone seemed to want a room change at 1:30am and seem to want to involve not only the hotel staff but seemingly everyone else on the 4th floor. The bed was comfortable and bigger than I had expected.
It ok for one night but don't expect a proper nights sleep.

Arrived and noticed sign on desk...

Sep 2008, Mr P Crabb

Arrived and noticed sign on desk saying renovation in progress, this had not been mentioned on the website when I booked, the scaffolding was right outside our window which could not be locked. To get to the room you have to take a lift then go up one set of steps and down another. This seemed the same for a number of rooms. The room was small for a double and the ensuite was a converted wardrobe, you had to juggle around the sink to get to the toilet. The TV was a tiny portable with only basic channels. The furnishing looked 2nd hand. The room was clean and tidy, it had obvious had a fresh lick of paint and some new fittings. When it was cleaned during the 1st day they left dirty coffee cups in the room.I just felt that for the money they were charging it should have been better. The same went for the breakfast, if you wanted cereal and cooked they charged extra. The traditional was nicely presented but meagre, and heaven knows what they did to the poached fish on the 2nd morning because they had burnt it. There is a very good cafe that does breakfast in the street behind the hotel!

Reception staff very friendly and...

Apr 2008, Miss C Murray

Reception staff very friendly and helpful. My room was right at the top of the hotel so I had about 66 steps to climb every time I wanted to go to my room (lift broken for the duration making it very awkward for the less able and those with children). However, the room was lovely and clean and very comfortable - despite being too hot.
The breakfast was very nice with plenty of choice and a vegetarian option.
I really enjoyed my stay and would do it again, although I would suggest the hallways being redecorated and recarpeted as it looks quite scruffy and that the lift is maintained!

Nov 2007, Mr J Donaldson

Arrived Sunday evening. Receptionist not very communicative and with tendency to mumble, as she was not English this was a problem. Took tiny lift to third floor, walked up a flight of stairs and down another passing scuffed walls and stained carpet and came to our room. Key card would not open door. Went back down. Receptionist informed me that you had to bend the key card to make it work. Why didn't she tell me that in the first place?
Room small, far too hot even with heating off. Stain on ceiling. Washbasin coming loose from plinth, loo seat wobbly. Wash basin took a long time to drain.
Breakfast ok. Had to walk down from third floor with suitcases as chambermaid had immobilised lift. Tried to remonstrate but little English. Cheap enough with deal but not exactly a pleasurable experience.
