Wonderful stay at this hotel - read for Taxi advice though
I stayed at the hotel in May 2005 and it was a wonderful experience. It's an older place, but beautifully kept and the grounds are incredible! The staff was extremelly helpful and very service-oriented. No air-conditioning, but the windows in the room opened up and they brought us fans and we were very comfortable. I'd definitaly return, especially because the town was a very short walk away and it was so easy and fun just to hop up and down for lunch and dinner each day. The only complaint I have has nothing to do with the hotel,... more
If you go to Sintra, you must stay here!
Without a doubt, the Palacio de Setais is one of the most beautiful hotels we have ever seen. After having read some of the negative comments, we were not sure that we had made the right choice. But as soon as we drove up to this incredible property, we knew we had made a good decision. Upon entering, we were greeted by a very friendly staff who spoke good English. We had had car trouble driving from Sevilla, Spain and so we were happy to have finally reached our destination several hours late. As we walked through the hotel to our room, we... more
When in Portugal, stay in Sintra and Stay Here!
We stayed here for four nights in March 2005, along with two other couples. All of us were thoroughly charmed by the hotel, and we are all seasoned European travelers. It is the site of an old palace, and rests on beautifully manicured grounds. The back of the hotel has incredible views from the rooms and common areas. Our room was huge -- I would guess at least 350 square feet. The baths are modern and very accomodating. While the hotel offers every luxury and convenience, it maintains an "oldness" that we all found charming. It has... more
A romantic hideaway
We stayed at this wonderful hotel for three days in a suite by the park and we loved it. The hotel manager welcomed us with a selected bottle of port and some sweets. The restaurant offered,if compared to average portuguese cuisine, quite a good selection of food....and you could dine with some nice music played by a harpist. The palace has some wonderful historic rooms to visit.
An era gone by...But still a worthy experience
I had a hard time selecting a rating for this hotel. On one hand, the hotel is very tired and desperately in need of repair (that picture from the hotel's website is comically doctored to present a fresh yellow paintjob), but on the other hand, how often do you get to stay in an old palace with beautiful grounds up on a hill with distant views of the ocean? It conjures up images of a Portuguese version of a Gatsby-style party...and yet the air conditioning does not really work and the windows are jammed shut and peeling with paint and... more
Sad to see the decline
This was our thrid stay at the hotel and it is clear that Tivoli - the state backed hotel group - desperately need to invest in this - their star property. The hot water ran a dark yellow for at least 5 minutes before clearing. The electricity looked dangerous with wiring loose and a plug falling off the wall. Masonary and carvings on the outside of the building have started to fall off - which could be dangerous. Smoking is allowed in all the rooms and they are not well ventillated - this has damaged the famous wallpaper and paintings.... more
A peaceful retreat from busy Sintra
Just a wonderful place to start a holiday. With just 30 rooms and a palace in its own grounds to spend time in, Seteais feels like a personal stately home. Ten minutes from Sintra which, in August, is full of bad-tempered tourists and queues of traffic, Seteais really is a place to escape. So glad we chose Seteais rather than Tivoli Hotels' other 5 star offering in central Sintra - which is grim, grim, grim. Champagne on arrival, with the manager's compliments. Grounds to walk in and hills to climb. A cool pool to refresh... more
Glorious
What can I say about this hotel to do it justice? The setting is just astounding - views all the way to the coast one way and looking the other you see Palacio Pena right up on the hill above. The room we had (number 5) was lovely - quite a small room but beautifully decorated and with a HUGE private balcony that gave both views. There were a couple of staff who were absolutely brilliant - but there were also a couple of staff who were a little less helpful! We didn't eat there in the evenings, but we were totally spoilt with... more
Sintra Beckons with this Beautiful Hotel
I stayed at the Hotel Palacio de Seteais in Sintra this end of March 2004. The Hotel is a converted palace that was last inhabited by the last Marquis of Marialva. The public rooms are beautiful and truly majestic with antiques and trompe l'oeil on many of the walls. I found the staff to be helpful and friendly and the rooms cosy and well maintained, although some of the window frames needed a new coat of paint (the harsh winter sea air can take its toll). There is a nice restaurant and terrace bar and the grounds of the palace are very well... more
Great hotel
I stayed at the Setais in september 2003 with my family and we really enjoyed it . The hotel is a great antique palace with lots of charme and class ; the room was very large with outstanding wrough iron beds ,beautiful antique furniture , great view over an incredibly beautiful Italian garden very well maintened . There were flowers in every corner of the hotel , a very nice pool with cold water (...why ??) surrounded by wonderful gardens. The living room ,the reading room and the bar offer comfort and charm ;every evening a very good man... more
