Colina Dos Mouros Hotel

We stayed at Colina dos Mouros for a week in May/June 2008. The hotel is very clean and well presented situated just outside a quiet village called Silves. The village itself is only a 5 minute walk from the hotel and is lovely with a Cathedral and Castle. There are a few bars and restaurants in Silves but we would recommend that you definitely HIRE A CAR and use Silves as your base because there are many more villages nearby with plenty of restaurants and bars (we would recommend Albufeira and Lagos). Colina dos Mouros is a very peaceful hotel. However, most of the rooms are situated below the Reception/Dining Room and we were woken up every morning with the sound of scraping chairs and kept awake some nights when the hotel hosted parties for Portuguese coach trips/conferencing parties. The parties only seemed to come in the evening and go after breakfast so this was not a problem for during the day but was rather annoying when you are trying to sleep. They also had breakfast before everyone else at 7am so we were woken up quite early. The pool area was very nice and most days we had the pool to ourselves which was lovely. There are not enough sunbeds for the number of rooms though so we would not recommend this hotel in peak season because we can imagine that it can get very busy around the pool area. On the last day we were there a group of local teenagers were given permission to use the pool area and they were very noisy and boisterous which meant that most people relaxing around the pool ended up leaving the pool area and the young children who had been swimming in the pool did not want to go in because the teenagers were so rowdy. This was the only major downfall to our week and ruined a peaceful pool area! The rooms consist of twin beds, small TV and en-suite. The rooms are cleaned daily and kept to a very high standard. Most rooms have a small balcony and if you are lucky you may get a room with a view of the Castle and Cathedral which is beautiful. The hotel staff were friendly and the breakfast was nice. Silves itself is a lovely village and there are plenty of villages within driving distance to visit. There is a lovely beach in Carveiro which is a short drive from Silves. We would recommend this hotel for both couples and families and recommend that you go in the quieter months to enjoy this peaceful hotel.

Just returned from this hotel. We stayed there four nights and found it to be very good. It really is a bargain. The rooms are simple but they and the whole hotel are spotless and the staff were helpful and welcoming. There was a little noise as one reviewer said but nothing that disturbed us in our room on the lower ground floor (Room 102). The pool is a little on the cool side but there are plenty of sun loungers and the views are excellent. Our room had a superb view of Silves itself. We ate in the hotel one night and the food we had was fine, nothing complicated but good and value for money. The hotel was not busy but on a couple of nights it had large coach groups staying - mainly it seemed older French tourists who seemed to enjoy the place. The hotel is only five or ten minutes stroll into Silves. The town kept us busy for four days and has some excellent places to eat. We loved the place and would return. Overall we found the hotel did what it claimed and for a very good price. We will return.

The hotel was okay but there was noisy sound from people moving their chairs in the restaurant. The noise was so unbearable and woke us up every morning around 7. There was a dinner party for a group one night during our stay and the noise lasted until twelve midnight. What happened was they use very heavy chairs on hard ceramic floor that when people got up they could not lift the chairs but just have to drag it away from the table. Our room was on the floor above the restaurant but it was the same for rooms on the floor below where our friends were staying. I even had earplugs with me but still found the noise annoying.

Stayed here for a couple of nights as part of a trip spent travelling around the Algarve. The hotel is about a 5 minute walk across a bridge from the centre of Silves. It is nothing fancy but rooms are clean, the staff are helpful and the breakfast is decent. There is plenty of parking and the hotel is very easy to find. We only paid 40 Euro per night for a double room which I think represents excellent value for money. Marisqueria Rui is a great dinner option in Silves - the cataplanas were excellent.

This a really nice hotel - I can't believe the price, don't let it put you off. The room was great, the pool was perfectly adequate for us and our ten year old. The staff were very friendly, everything was clean. If I were to try and think of something which could be improved then maybe it would be more variety at breakfast, and sometimes when there was a party in, the pool side bar didn't open - but these were very minor things. Silves is lovely and if you can try to go during the medieval fair - it happens over a week or so, the whole town is transformed. It 's not tacky or touristy - lots of interesting craft stuff and local food. We found mostly Portuguese visitors were there. We were glad we didn’t go half board since the hotel food was not overly inspiring (the snack menus was good however), and there are inexpensive places to eat at in Silves. For a treat go to the café Ingles (is that how you spell it?) up by the castle, the courtyard restaurant is wonderful and the roof top pizzeria well worth a visit. I suppose if you are looking for an 18-30 type holiday then Slives and the Colinos is not for you, but for a rich and inexpensive family holiday it’s excellent. We will certainly be back.

The Colina Dos Mouros is a lovely hotel that overlooks the beautiful, quiet town of Silves. We enjoyed a very peaceful and relaxing week here in September 2007. Silves is not a resort, there are no nightclubs, pubs or bars. The town is very quiet with lovely restaurants, cobbled streets and the river runs alongside. Everywhere we went we saw local people. The town’s two main landmarks – the cathedral and the castle – are located in the old town, past the old gate. The roads are very steep here and the cobbles can be a little slippery, but it is enchanting. You can hear the cathedral chiming every half hour throughout the town. The hotel was lovely and we had an excellent, large room with a balcony that gave us a perfect view of the town (room 209). Most of the rooms were slightly smaller and not all rooms have balconies. The restaurant/bar was directly above us, but the bar closes at midnight so we weren’t kept awake late at night. The hotel has a lovely swimming pool and baby pool with a generous surrounding area for sunbathing. Unfortunately the pool bar was closed during our stay and we had to fetch drinks from the upstairs bar. There was also no staff presence around the pool which lead to glasses not being cleared away and some unwanted guests being able to wander onto the hotel premises unchecked. Our room was serviced everyday and sheets were changed every 2/3 days. The staff were lovely and very helpful, they all spoke English and were very friendly. Silves is a beautiful hideaway where you can get away from everything and relax. It may be missing some luxuries, but the peace and quiet are worth it.

We were travelling with our 9 month old baby, so needed somewhere baby friendly. We found the hotel to be clean, and comfortable - and with a room large enough to tuck the travel cot out of sight at night - which was great for not encouraging eye contact with our little one when he woke in the early hours! (we had requested a large room). It was a bit frustrating not to have a fridge in the room (particularly for baby food etc) but the staff were very accommodating and we could leave food in the fridge in the bar and collect it whenever we needed it. We also took our own travel kettle to make sure that the water for baby bottles was boiled... The hotel is on the other side of the river from the town,( so you get lovely views of the town) and it makes for a nice walk in to enjoy the many lovely restaurants there. However - at the moment one side of the bridge is impassable because of roadworks, and at one point as we crossed over the bridge we had to walk in the road which was a bit tricky with a buggy. That really is a minor point though, as the roadworks will finish and it will be an easier walk into town. The only other slight downside is that there is no area by the pool where the grass is shaded. Again, for little ones this is a bit tricky - as if you want them under the shade, the only parasols are on concrete. We bought a cheap parasol to use at the wonderful beaches (none of which were too far away) so we stuck that into the grass and created our own shade. All in all, good value for money for a great family holiday.

The hotel is a truly lovely place to stay. The staff are very friendly and the rooms very clean and tidy. For the price you pay, you get an excellent deal. The facilities may be seem a little basic but the pool is very pleasant with the water changed each night which is a nice thing to see. While we were there the bar was unmaned and unstocked, although this was early June so it may be in use when busier. From what we saw of Silves (which is very lovely) we do not think that you can do any better hotel wise than this place.

We loved it. Nice room with superb views over the old town and the castle.. The BEST BREAFAST we have had in Algarve. Very nice dining room. Superb dinner. Nice staff. Just one BUT. Although we, as a young couple, asked for double room, ours didnt have a proper double bed.. (although hotel was indeed empty - so plenty of empty rooms) This leads to the conclusions they simply DONT HAVE DOUBLE BEDS there.. It was just two twin beds put together, with some space between and separate blankets :((((( Not the best choice for young couple!!!! Rather upsetting i'd say!

i have just retured from this hotel and found it very good the staff are very good and i got a good deal just £17.00 per day.
