very average - could do better
This hotel has potential but could do much better, particularly given the cost of the accommodation MY ROOM OK, but not great. Access to my room was down a few stairs and then the bathroom was accessed up some seperate stairs. Not great if you have access problems. The edges of the carpet had not seen a hoover for some time. Other issues: No guest information or room service menu No bathroom facial tissues Filthy (but pretty) bedroom ornaments A degree is required to operate the numerous lights in the... more
Shabby
We stayed at Harpenden House early November 2007. We had planned to stay there for 4 to 5 nights but checked out early and stayed at Sopwell House instead. The room at Harpenden House was small, extremely shabby with torn fabric on the furniture, torn wall paper, terribly dated furniture and barely functioning bathroom. The shower was leaking and fixed with duck tape. The hallways were in similar condition. Furthermore, the reservations department neglected to tell us that the hotel was covered in scaffolding, with workers looking straight... more
Management response from GMHarpenden

I have to say that I am astounded by these comments. We have spent nearly £2million on our beautiful hotel and have just 3 rooms in the main house still to refurbish. The room used by this lady is our largest suite with a four poster, separate lounge, grand fireplace. It is very popular for our brides and grooms, and foreign travellers for its unique charm and character. In fact this is why we have left it until last. To say the room is small in incomprehensible, and although it is now dated and tired, it is kept in good order, but I can understand if the decor is not to everyones taste.

Wont be returning....
While staying there on business I was very disappointed with the hotel and the staff. The rooms were ok but extremely warm. Being close to the train line meant that I didn’t want to open the window to hear the trains go by in the night. My duvet cover had back spot markings on it which looked like damp stains. In my colleagues room there was a bra and a pair on underwear left on the chair at the dresser…. We arrived from breakfast at 8.45am on the first morning and there was no hot breakfast available. The staff offered us... more
Management response from GMHarpenden

I am obviously disppointed to see this negative experience, but more so that issues were not raised with the duty manager during the stay as we endeavour to make all guests comfortable and happy whilst staying with us. We have been conducting a trial of fully served breakfast with very positve feedback. The staff should explain the ordering procedure when seating any guets therefore I am sorry that this was not the case. All our rooms are large and airy, with thermostatic controls on the heating. We have added air conditioning to our main house rooms during the recent refurbishment, therefore would have bee happy to move the guest to one of these rooms if available. I apologise that the stay was not comfortable, and would hope that on returnig you would stay in our newly refurbished rooms and enjoy our usual high levels of service

Rooms were OK, great Location but breakfast and staff were very dissapointing
I stayed in the Hotel recently as I was visiting friends in the area and as they had a house full already, I booked my partner and myself in for the one night (Sat). Check in was fine and whilst the annex of the building is a little 50’s, the rooms themselves were pleasant enough and well finished with all the usual items you would expect. Our real disappointment came in the morning when we went across for breakfast – we were offered a seat in a very busy section of the restaurant right actually adjustment to the bar itself but... more
Loved the new rooms.
I recently stayed at the Harpenden House Hotel on business in one of their newly refurbished rooms. The room was in the delightful old Georgain House and was beautifully presented, modern, clean and with every amenity you could wish for. Dinner and breakfast in the hotel's restaurant were both enjoyable and the staff both friendly and attentive at all times. Value for money was really good too when the financial director is looking at expenses! The following week I brought my family back to the hotel as it was close to... more
Not impressed
I was not impressed with this hotel as we experienced a number of problems during our stay. The hotel is based around an old georgian manor house, this bit of the hotel looks lovely but the rooms in this part of the hotel are very small and hot. I was first allocated a room in this part of the hotel but when I went to the room the bed had not been made up and the room was being used for storage. My colleague stayed in this part of the house and struggled to fit into the tiny bed - she is only 5ft 2"! My replacement room was in a... more
Management response from GMHarpenden

As the new General Manager at the Harpenden House Hotel, I fully appreciate the comments made in this review, however, we have now completed phase 2 of the refurbishment, namely, the main house rooms have been totally renovated including installation of air conditioning. The garden courtyard rooms are due to start on 23rd July which will transform these rooms into executive standard. We are totally rebuilding and enlarging the bathrooms providing separate bath and shower, with new doorways to the bathrooms. The restaurant, bar and lounge are set to be refurbished from Monday 8th July for 3 weeks, offering a fusion of contemporay design and feature architecture. The team at the hotel are dedicated to excellent serivce and we receive many compliments and return guests daily. I recommend anyone to try our great service, facilties and food, and you are assured of a very warm welcome and comfortable stay.

Very average..
Went to the Corus in Harpenden and stayed for one night. The hotel is just outside the main town centre which is about a 5 min walk away. First room we were given was near the top of the old building. The room was ok, but the furniture was a little worn and the bathroom could have done with a bit of a makeover. It was clean and gave a good view of the green outside. However, as we were in the middle of a heatwave on the day we arrived we asked to be moved as it was unbearably hot in the room. The next room we got was in the new complex... more
Nice hotel, nice place
I stayed at this hotel on 2 ocasions in March / April 2005 whilst in the area on a business training course. The rooms I had on both ocasions were very clean and spacious - on the second ocasion i had a "family room" to myself so no complaints about the space. Breakfast was excellent - self service hot buffet with helpful and friendly staff. Only a 10 minute walk to the local train station which was ideal for me travelling from there back home to the north west. Only downside in the top block of the hotel is the ocasional... more
Nice Place
I stayed here for 2 nights in Nov 04, whilst on business in the area, and couldnt disagree more with the previous review. I can only assume this review relates to the other hotel in Harpenden, The Hanover International, which now calls itself the Glen Eagles, and this place IS truly awful, as we booked ourselves out and moved across to the Corus, a very wise decision! (read my review of the Hanover!) The Corus is not old. The original main building is a former Georgian Convent and now comprises the main part of the hotel, reception... more
Very uncomfortable
Hotel is very old and room was very uncomfortable. Mattress springs were sticking up. When I complained to staff, they were not helpful. I finally got to sleep around 3 a.m. after padding it with blankets. No air conditioning and room was dusty. If you have dust and mold allergies, stay away from this hotel. Moved to another hotel the following day.
