Fantastic value for four star hotel
10 / 10
Nov 2011, familyhistorian

This really was a four star hotel worthy of its acclaim but we only paid the price we are used to paying at inferior chains (November). Excellent value. The room was clean, quiet and the hotel very convenient for Bedford Record Office and the shops. The thing that made it so fantastic was the food, which was absolutely great and not over priced. Interesting menu beautifully prepared, cooked and served. On arrival we had a platter of bread and cheese for sharing in the bar. £8.20 for 5 delicious local cheeses, very nicely presented. Good service. It would have been perfect if there was a bit more of a welcome - we felt pretty much that we had to find our own way around - but all in all we could not have been more pleased and will hope to return if we need accommodation in Bedford again. Highly recommended.

The swan was a lovely hotel to stay in for the weekend, it has great decor both inside and outsite, the staff are very friendly and it has a lovely view overlooking the bedford river. The other bedford hotel i recommend is reviewed here

Looks good on internet but reality different
4 / 10
Jun 2010, Colin Chelmsford

This 4* hotel has a questionable rating and must surely be more of a 3*. Situated in the centre of Bedford it has inadequate parking for guests and tends to fill the limited available space with functions leaving guests to find parking in Bedford which is difficult to say the least. The decor is tired and service pleasant but slow in the resurant areas. Not a very pleasant or safe part of town.No garden or outside areas of consequence. Adjacent to noisy embankment of river. Could be so much better if they started to value the paying guests

The hotel location is excellent and when viewing the hotel on the Internet it is easy to see why it would be a compelling choice if you needed to stay in Bedford.
However the reality is a tired and rundown hotel lacking any effective leadership, reflected in the attitude of a large number of staff. My direct dealings with the hotel managers have, in particular, been eye opening disappointing. I have stayed there on several occasions in recent years, and my experience on every occasion has been the same.
It was noticeable that the priority of the staff seemed to be directed at guests attending functions in the hotel, to the neglect of those simply being paying room guests.

Absolutely beautiful hotel. Only stayed for a night as I had just been to a hen party.
The room couldn't have been cleaner; the staff were friendly and pampered to your every need.
This is actually the nicest place I think I have ever stayed at and I travel round UK regularly.
In a good area, overlooking a beautiful river and is right by the town so everything is very close by.
Definitely stay here if you get the chance.

I stayed here the night of my wedding as it was not booked my neither myself or my husband we never knew what the hotel was like but it was lovely.
We were treated like celebs as we were greeted with flowers and champagne. We were shown to own room where we had complimentary tea and biscuits. The room was very nice with stunning views over the river.
There is a relaxing, romantic swimming pool/bath downstairs which unfortunately we never got a chance to use as we never bought our cossies.
The food was wonderful and staff very friendly. Very much recommend.
